The threat of the drive was always in his favor. His quickness and ability to go left or right. Greatest weapon because he could score from anywhere he felt.
I’m here in 2022, and his impact on the game is still on display. Kobe, Jayson Tatum, and Devin Booker use this move consistently. Mike passes it to Kobe who then gives it to Tatum and D. Book. People don’t talk about this part of the game enough as most are enamored with stats and analytics for the purpose of debate. No disrespect to this channel, but there is a breakdown series on RU-vid that breaks down Jordan and his moves. What made him great is just about all of his moves looked the same to start, but he had counters that put him in his spots to get what he wanted. You can still see his imprint on the game and he wasn’t played on over 20 years and in his prime longer than that. That’s why he’s the GOAT.
This move is very representative of many of MJ's game. Based on speed and beating people to a spot with a hard plant and explosion. Also, this move is huge come playoff time against half court sets. Mid-range game is a forgotten art.
@@ballislife9989 True...and that's what some players today don't understand. If you watch the Bucks defense against Harden...he should have switched to the mid-range and it would have been more difficult for the Bucks to guard him but no, he relied on the 3 or driving to the basket and they stopped him almost every time.
@@ballislife9989 Exactly, it's also the reason Kawhi Leonard becomes the best player in the league in playoffs. No wasted dribbles, good fundamentals and a sweet midrange jumper that consistently produces points/fouls.
@@jtremaine23 why KD and Kawhi are monsters in the playoffs. Teams have learned to scheme against the 3 and the paint. Harden's game is so inflexible as of now.
i laugh at those who said ray allen or miller were better pure shooter than jordan. none of those guys had the efficiency of this man. jordan's release form and ability to adjust his shot in the air was beyond any one of the greatest shooters in the league history ( yes that includes bird and curry). just because he didn't shoot many 3s and didn't have higher 3pt % doesn't mean he is a inferior long range shooter. some of these 2pt are close to 3s anyway.
@@anthonycelestin3559 yes. During The Last Dance, ESPN ran a story explaining that MJ is statistically the most efficient and highest volume midrange shooter ever... by a long mile.
Beautiful to watch, and that's an understatement, Jordan has such dominance on the pull up jumper. Just another weapon he had in his all round arsenal, Lebrons jumper isn't half of what Jordan's is
Dat boi Dani Lebron is statistically a way better 3 pts shooter than MJ. Having more made threes in one game doesn’t make him better. That’s like saying Scott skiles is better than Magic because he got 30 assists. Dnt forget they shortened the 3pt line for Jordan too
I don’t think I ever seen anything as pretty to watch as mj playing ball. Floyd for example smooth in the ring and easy to watch, Messi a master wth the ball great to watch but mj just got so much swag it’s unreal
Thanks. That's one of the motivations for making videos like this. To show the younger gen what skills/attributes made him so great. This is a lost art in today's game yet so important.
@@ballislife9989 Good job dude. You definitely be some pulling some rare footage out from the archives. It's almost unbelievable how great this dude was as a player. He absolutely had no weakness. Your vids are awesome. Thanks
Not that he's the only player that can do this. There are have been hundreds of players throughout history that could do it. MJ just happened to be perhaps the most consistent and best to do it. He had all the factors that are needed: IQ, quickness, elevation, separation, footwork, balance etc. He knew how and when to do it and took advantage of his ability to do so.
I learned this move from a Kobe video when I was younger. I should've figured Bean adopted it from Mike. Either way, I still use it almost every time I ball
Yes it is. Michael’s hard work, dedication to his craft and love of basketball was unmatched. Absolutely deadly as a competitor. He was beyond genius and watching him play the game was an event.
i wonder if there are any crazy bball fans who would try to go back to the existing footages to find the stats of jordan's accuracy on this type of shot. my guessitimate is that it is pretty close to 50%, if not more, throughout his entire career. i say it because if half of your shots would go in, the defender would usually go for the fake. and that's the case for jordan. defenders had so much respect to jordan mid-range it made his pump fake so much more efficient. his huge hands also let him place the ball in the open spot with ease. and on top of everything, he understand what efficiency means when it comes to scoring. no need for 15 between the legs crossover when you can get open just using one dribble and a large stride. i agree that this type of shot is equally important in his arsenal as his fadeaway. one of the many reasons why he was so unguardable.
I can’t tell you the percent of his one dribble pull ups, but I heard somewhere that he made over 80% of his fadeaways which is mindbloeing if it’s true
he can afford to do that because he has one of the best 1st steps in the history of the game. I get some ballers play with their food too much but just as many use those dribbles because its the best way to move their man out of position
The use of handchecking is also a reason why MJ had to rely on that shot. MJ is hand checked in most of those possessions preventing him from driving. The lane is also congested so when he did beat his man a defender was there so he had to pull up. One of the main reasons players today don't use it as much is because they don't have to. No hand checking and open lanes give them more freedom to penetrate. Isolation that gives offensive players more freedom to dribble and dribble and dribble and thus breaking down their defender also makes the pull up a more obsolete move, realistically why need it?
eventually someone is going to go under on a screen right in your path to the basket and try to run you into the heart of the defense. pull up would come in pretty clutch in that situation.
Jordan=UNSTOPPABLE🐐. If God was a basketball player he would be MICHAEL JORDAN. I wish there WOULD BE, especially in my lifetime but, there will NEVER be another Michael Jordan or anyone better EVER in the game that we know now as basketball. Iverson, Kobe, LeBron, Shaq, and many others were all awesome in there own right. But nothing like MJ. He was just a marvel to see, and I'm just glad I had the chance to watch him throughout the prime of his career. Out of all the games I watched MJ play (and it was many, they were ALWAYS televised) I could count on my hands how many times I might have seen him miss his whole career. To be honest, I don't remember more than 2 or 3😐
this is why today's players get more turnovers because they play more dribbles and dance to the court than to shoot it...that is why mj has a great footwork, jab step and pump fakes to loose his opponent and make a mid range shot or make fadeaway jumpshot..
ZuRa_Janai they get more turnovers because of zone defenses that doesn’t allow this type of game unless your teammates can spread the floor really well. If Chicago had a time machine and he had to deal with today’s defense with THESE teammates, that shot is neutralized.
ZuRa_Janai for one let’s not lie to ourselves rarely do people find someone showing off their handles as a boring showcase. Two even if you are one of these people it doesn’t change the fact that in today’s defense Jordan would need that type of “boring” play to be effective and unless he has a team like Houston or Golden State the one dribble pull up is almost worthless.
@@MrSlashblade lol..i am 100% millenial here..but jordan doesn't need that so called show off dribbling skills...he has a perfect fundamentals..outstanding footwork..explosive jab step..with a help of his big hands..your today's players would get humiliated
MJ is the undisputed goat!👍👍👍 everybody said kobe did it better, i utterly disagree! plus Jordan did it effortlessly as see the best offense directly to execute the best pull up jumper/fadeaways..
I KNOW EVERYBODY is going to say HERE HE GO!!! *Kyrie Irving is going to have to hit the MID RANGE like this; in other words he is going to have to TAKE WHAT THE DEFENSE GIVES HIM.
I love mj he's the goat but he gets a lot more space on the perimeter to pull up.. the defence collapses asap. Compare it to kobe and tmac they played more sophisticated defences for sure... LeBron gets so much space and single coverage. Differences ppl don't spot
if larry jordan is taller as mj, they would be unstoppable duo on the court.. good thing that mj inherit that from his brother plus with his competitive nature
@@danieloceans9652 yup.. thats why mj learned a lot from his older brother..if larry is tall enough, they would be the greatest duo in the history of sports because of footwork and athleticism
