At the opening of Wednesday's episode of The Michael Kay Show, Michael Kay and Don La Greca discuss Derek Jeter's announcement that he will retire after the 2014 season and ponder what the future holds for the Yankees' Captain.
Derek's career is as old as me. My childhood will be completely retired at the end of this season. So crazy to think that. Had the pleasure of meeting him as well when I was 10 and he was so sweet to me. Gonna be missed but I can't wait to see what he brings to this 2014 season!
What baffles me is the fact that he did it over the Internet number one number two why not stay with the Yankees organization since you’ve been with them since 1995 instead of picking up the Miami Marlins why not ask for a coaching position or a management positionWith the New York Yankees
He didn't want to be a coach. He had no interest in being a coach. He wanted to be an owner. So he didn't want to be the GM or anything like that. He wants to call the ultimate shots and own the team. And with the marlins, he is. He owns a good portion of the team, and runs the team. He would never own the yankees. He would never be a part owner. And he would never be making all the decisions.
I mean, only 5 people in history had more hits than him, he's a lifetime .310 hitter, played, I believe, 4 games in the regular season where his team was out of playoff contention... In his entire career. Plus 5 rings, huge clutch hits and defensive plays. Oh yeah, he also hit a couple hundred homers and was among the smartest baserunners ever. But you make a compelling argument to the contrary with "yeah, ok"
There very well may be. But having 30 players better than you doesn't mean you're not amongst the all time greats. Jeter is unquestionably a top 5 player at his position, was a winner, was clutch, had some pop and was an excellent baserunner.
@@snerdterguson Well the question is where you make the cutoff to say "one of the greatest players who ever lived," or "one of the greatest players we'll ever see." Nobody with sense would argue that Jeter wasn't a great player, because he absolutely was. I hold my "one of the greatest players we'll ever see" to guys who are top 10 all time. Jeter isn't that. A great player, a deserving first ballot Hall of Famer, but I wouldn't go "one of the greatest players we'll ever see."
