Michael is like 2 inches away from becoming a Swifty and I’m convinced that listening to folklore and evermore would push him over the edge (or watching the long pond sessions!) Those albums are genuinely so beautiful and complex both lyrically and musically, they really show her genuine skill as a singer/ songwriter

“This isn’t for me.” Thanks Michael for acknowledging that things can be for different audiences. It’s so easy to just dunk on everything women like. I appreciate you don’t do that. Let women like things! I’m not a Swiftie, but she has some catchy songs that obviously strike a cord with many, many women. I know she’s liberal, but that doesn’t stop her from being a good entertainer. And she’s clearly a savvy businesswoman. Her father taught her well in that regard.

I really enjoy Michael's videos on Taylor Swift. He doesn't just trash her dating history or political views. He acknowledges that although she doesn't aligns with his tastes, that Taylor is talented and she has found the formula that separates a one hit wonder from a hugely successful and memorable musician.

The little girl was Colby Bryant’s daughter who Taylor gave a hug. Before he tragically passed…Taylor was good friends with the Bryant’s. The concert was definitely a magical moment for his daughter who Taylor was her last concert she saw with her dad and sister in 2016/17.

As a Swiftie, this was a fantastic review. Even if you don't like someone or something, it doesn't mean it's not done well. This thoughtful review was done very tastefully.

About the girl that Taylor hugs in the movie, each night of the tour she would choose a different kid from the audience to come up and they would get a hug and her hat from that song. And the girl that night was Bianca Bryant, Kobe Bryant’s daughter.

I'm not a fan of Taylor Swift - not my kind of music - but I have a friend who works at a stadium where she performed on this tour and he said that she was utterly professional and very gracious to her crew. She even bought food for him and the rest of guys he works with. So she does seem to be a sincerely kind person. Contrast that with Beyonce, who did a show within about a month of Taylor and went onstage several hours late for absolutely no reason; no technical problems, etc. My friend said it was the worst act of contempt for both fans and workers he has ever experienced.

As an almost 30-year-old male, I will unabashedly admit I am a Swiftie. Not overly fanatic, maybe a 7 on a fan scale of 10. But I’ve listened to her stuff since I was in high school and I saw the concert film with my wife. I believe she is a genuine artist of our times, regardless of whether you enjoy her music or not. She basically writes all her own music and even re-recorded her prior albums as a way of standing up to the corporate music industry. And she’s been doing this since she was just 16 herself. Incredibly talented and apparently authentic, she’s definitely a force in our culture

Michael, that little girl was Kobe Bryant’s daughter. Kobe and Taylor were friends and big fans of each other. She invited Kobe’s widow and daughters to her concert and gave his daughter the 22 hat. It was extremely moving because we all remember Taylor’s and Kobe’s friendship.

This is why I love Michael Knowles. He took the time to actually see what was going on instead of making assumptions and cruel accusations like Candace. I've been a Taylor fan since her very first song came out on the radio. Conservative, homeschool mom of four. I adore her music and her as a person.

really appreciate this review! taylor's songs are incredibly nostalgic for me as I grew up with them as a girl but understood the meaning of her songs as I grew up. in comparison to many other popular celebs, she isn't on stage twerking and disrespecting herself and other women, she wants her concerts to be fun, glittery, and a dance party. she also quietly donates generous sums of money to food banks in every city she goes to on her tours. really love her gratefulness and authenticity.

This was extreamly refreshing. Sometimes I feel like people hate on her just because without any valid reasoning, which is way less interesting as opposed to something like this. Taylor is an amazing songwriter and does maintain that real connection with her audience, this was refreshing to see! Big fan of yours Micheal !

As a Taylor fan, straight male, I enjoy her music but idk if I'd go out of my way to watch a concert film above other alternatives. The fact that she can make one to this magnitude is impressive.

Objectively Taylor Swift could become a runway model. If you watch her in Victoria Secret‘s fashion show, standing next to them, you can’t tell the difference. Taylor could easily pass for one of them if she went for similar makeup/dressing style. Her going for „girl next door“ look is the tool to appear more relatable to the audience, so that her looks are not threatening and don’t evoke jealousy…

As a Swiftie who saw this movie opening weekend and screamed in the movie theater and knows every word to every song, Michael is very right. (Except I do want to add- the little girl in the crowd is Kobe Bryant's daughter, not a random girl, but some nights on tour they were more random people). She truly appreciates the fans, because she started as a 15 year old girl performing for the tiniest crowds in Nashville. She is absolutely just a regular girl who got famous because of her songwriting talent, and didn't lean into the craziness of being famous. Even her controversial takes aren't ever extreme, but are just the bare minimum to keep her appealing to liberal Hollywood (Alex Clark has a great video about this). She's just writing about the stories that her fans connect to, even when her experience of it is on a completely different scale. To us Swifties, she's just a cute cat lady who happens to be a billionaire. And I think she earned every penny because of exactly what Michael said.

Took my daughter to the movie. I got teary eyed from being overwhelmed with emotion watching the dozens of young girls singing and dancing together in front of the screen. Having so much fun like they’re at the concert. Trading friendship bracelets with each other, all of it was just so great. Honestly loved the whole experience.

Michael lol the little “perfectly casted girl” in the middle of her Red set is actually Bianca Bryant (Late Kobe’s daughter). The concert was filmed during her LA stop. I appreciate you wanting to review the film, but I do think it was made for the fans. So many were unable to get tickets that this is almost like the next best thing. Her music is very autobiographical, and the albums especially starting at Speak Now (her third album) to now (😅) really is a good chronological timeline of her life… and the albums fully encompass that from underlying themes, colors, and production of music.

I just wanted to point out, your description of Taylor is fully aligned with her lyrics in "mirrorball" "I want you to know I'm a mirrorball, I'll show you every version of yourself tonight. I'll get you out on the floor, shimmering beautiful..."

In a world full of one-hit-wonders singing/rapping about sex, drugs, the occult..Taylor Swift is so unproblematic. All she does is sing about love, heartbreak, friendship and betrayal. She has kept it classy and consistent for almost two decades. Being her fan is a fun experience.

She radiates gratitude. She’s extraordinarily talented, naturally funny, self-deprecating, hard-working. This is rare for a celebrity.

I think one of the things that separate her from other artists is her direct fan engagement. From the very start of her career she has always been very kind and genuine to her fans. From her Fearless album she always made the effort to meet fans and have genuine conversations with them. She is very good at making you feel like the only person in the room and feeling like you are her best friends. All throughout her career she has hosted secret session, sent gift to fans, went to her fans houses and hosted FREE multiple meet and greets after her shows, and giving huge amounts of money to them if they were in need. She has always been insanely kind to her fans and there has never been one person who said she was mean and stuck up. Since she has kept this character throughout her career and being so sweet and generous to her fans, people continue to support her.

I couldn’t name a TS song, but I am amazed and happy that there’s an entertainer that can fill a football stadium across the US. Who else has been able to do that? U2? And 15 years ago? Good for her. Plus, from what i can tell, the music is mostly wholesome and not low brow. Good for her. She’s earned it.

I don’t know if you guys stopped to think about this but Taylor is basically the only pop artists still singing about love. Other ones is just sex, money and fame. We can all appreciate Taylor a little bit

Keep in mind that Tylor Swift was originally branded as a pop country singer. She can always revert back to her country roots and be popular literally forever. She can get married, be a soccer mom etc… It doesn’t matter. You can be a country singer until the day you die. So she is actually in a good position to last. As long as western society doesn’t collapse, anyway. Honestly, she’s proof that pop singers don’t have to “slut it up” to be popular.

I think she may have started out innocent enough but the business machine got her. It gets most all of them. There’s so much to the story but so few will believe. Ice Cube tells the story really well. They tried to get him but he wouldn’t give in. Kid Rock is another that wouldn’t give in. I’m sure there’s several but most got where they are by giving in.

I really thought he would trash Taytay as most conservatives do (Candice Owens) but actually, he took the approach of forgetting about any preconceived opinion he might have and just looked at the things like they are. In Thailand, we don't use songs to separate genders. Men and women love Taylor Swift equally. We love artists who do good work and are dedicated. Even if it's a girl's song, we don't care. I'm a man, thirty-four years old, and still sing Taylor Swift when hanging out with my friends, and all my friends their all-straight men think that maybe it's because American men think I'm too strong to listen to Taylor Swift's music.

She gives the Red hat to an audience member (usually a child) at every show. [I believe her team screens the audience and picks someone who is then brought to the right spot.] They filmed the LA shows for the film; the girl she gives the hat to is Kobe Bryant's youngest daughter. This was a little nod to how nice Kobe always was to Taylor and how, about 8 years ago, he had come on stage during her show to congratulate her for setting the record for most sold-out shows at the Staples Center.

I think this is a on point review and extremely respectful. You hit the nail on the head, I love her music-but the primary reason for that is that she writes all her own music and so the lyrics an are deeply relatable. And the fact that she does make everything about her fans was a huge motivator. I don’t pay attention to her political perspectives because I know what they are, and I separate the perspectives of the artist from the art itself. And you’re totally right that she makes hits continuously that people like, and they relate to. And even when she does write sensuous music she typically strives to be classy, even with dark music the same thing. But art does have specific audiences and it’s cool that while it isn’t Michael Knowles specific taste he can understand why they love it. Great review 🙂

A big part of Swift's success is not her music. it's her intelligence and acumen. The way she re-recorded her own music to give the middle finger to the publishing house that tried to charge her for it for her biography will define how musicians interact with publishers going forward. She's made a doctorate-level contribution to her field.

Michael I do appreciate you being very open-minded in your review of this movie bc I am a 47yr old mom of four OG Swiftie 💘 but I feel sad for you that you miss seeing the reality of the poetry in her writing. I know she makes it easy to miss bc the tunes are just so dang catchy, she’s making the whole thing look too easy. You used the word banal. I challenge you to write what you think is a banal pop song. See if you can get anyone at all to listen to it. People don’t spend hours weeks and months listening to her music bc her songs are banal or bc she has the humanity to wave and recognize them as humans. What has made her the generational phenomenon she is today is the advent of her earnest poetry - THAT is what makes the women feel seen. You were pretty close to naming it right but ultimately you got it wrong.

I also admire her confidence and how it can manifest what she wants. When I first heard TS back in the day...I thought her voice was like nails on a chalkboard. PAINFULLY bad. I thought: "She's not gonna last long." Boy was I wrong! She's a below average singer with an average "girl next door" beauty and an average ability to write poetry aka songs. But her business acumen and marketing skills are way...WAY... above average. Not to mention, she's amazingly disciplined. She worked on her voice. She worked on her body. She listened to criticism, worked on what was criticized to the best of her ability, and then wrote songs about her critics that cast herself (and her fans) as the persecuted underdogs. It's an amazing thing to witness. She found her niche, not so much in storytelling, but in what I call "Cloak and Dagger" marketing when she made her albums a type of Little Orphan Annie decoder ring that encouraged fans to become investigators in a type of secret club. That was and remains absolutely brilliant marketing. It keeps fans focused on every, little thing she does and rushing out to be the first to get albums for reasons of playing Cloak and Dagger and to be among the first to decode whatever secret clue shared. It's like TS has created her very own secret society of secret handshakes and secret club meetings while, ironically, not having an real secrets. It's mind-numbingly genius and even wholesome. She's got grown women and men making friendship bracelets and dressing up in their favorite Era while turning a concert into the equivalent of a secret society pilgrimage. And this is the paradox of TS. She is very much the person and character of her mid-west roots. She's a woman that likes being feminine. She likes baking cookies and being nurturing even to her fans. But she's also a powerhouse entrepreneur who's incredibly ambitious, competitive, and career-driven. It's like there's two sides to Swift that compete with each other, but also create absolute magic when they work in unison as with becoming a cookie-baking "Mother" to fans. It's really a fascinating phenomenon to watch.

A good discussion point: her dad. He’s an investor, I reckon he’s been pushing all her ideas in the background: own your own music, skip the middle guys and go straight to the movie distributors. Buy market research stuff. Get smarter about your target audience. Discussion on her mom. How her support has possibly impacted her “stability” in the business together with her dad. How Taylor got it that she has a product to sell. And then contrast contrast contrast. Loads and loads of fun (and sadness) with other similar artists. Where were their parents? Who bound them into the business? When did they spiral downward? What went down with the ones they were bound to?

All I know of her is the base beat to a song of hers that my upstairs neigbor played on repeat night after night so I come from a sort of antognostic pov, but I actually was hoping to see a clip to see what all the fuss was about. Edit: the song was Trouble and even though my neighbor drove me nuts, once I heard the actual music and not just the base, I actually like the song, It's the only song I know of hers, lol. Life is weird.

Taylor is not a product. She is who she is. No one can fake a whole carrier. She trully loves and appreciates her fans. And every song is about her strungles and feelings. And being such a good story teller, the audients connect with her, and so, we all can see that we are not alone. It does not matter how much money you have, you are still a person, with strungles and fears, etc. In my book up till today, she can do no wrong, even when she is ruthles in bussines dealing, i can say "Yeah, you go girl"

The little girl was actually Kobe Bryant’s daughter. Vanessa Bryant was also in the audience. Kobe and Taylor were good friends and she was crushed when she heard the news of his passing as well as his other daughter’s passing. Taylor truly is one of the most genuine people out there. I don’t know how people still can’t see that.

What annoyed me recently about Taylor is that she featured a transman (a woman who got surgeries and hormones to look like a guy) in the video for the song "Lavender Haze." It was extremely irresponsible to promote this to her mostly female audience. She's not the only one to do this, though, as Harry Styles' (also with a mostly female audience) cosmetics company, Pleasing, strongly featured a transman in the advertising, close up of mastectomy scars and all. But besides that, I like a lot of Taylor's songs for the reasons Knowles stated. They are just... normal... and a lot of young women can relate to the themes of growing up, love, heartbreak, and finding it hard to fit in.

As far as her selling people what they want to buy, she says something to that effect in Mastermind...."No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I've been scheming like a criminal ever since, to make them love me and make it seem effortless, this is the first time I've felt the need to confess. That's a hell of a talent if you can do it. I'm glad you didn't bash her. I've seen some Conservatives do this because she's been political in the past. She said when she was younger that she didn't want to get political and I give her the benefit of the doubt because I know how the Left is and how much pressure they put on people to say, think and do what they want. Hell they even threatened to cancel her if she didn't stop dating a particular guy. Also the serpent thing isn't occult, it's because of a spat with Kim Kardashian/Kanye where they were calling her a snake. As a guy, I probably shouldn't know that. Great analysis Michael!!! I was wondering why the movie left me feeling so great and just excited, even though I do not even consider myself a swiftie. (Well I do now that I have watched the movie) As a 25 year old, I like the fact that her songs are traditional in the sense you pointed out. Their innocence is what draws me to them as well. And in general, I think you can say that Taylor Swift definitely wears clothes, hair and makeup in a conversative, classy way, which I like a lot!
