“My name's Michael Ledger. I believe I was born an alcoholic. From 12 years old to 20, I went from all different types of hallucinogens, ecstasy, acid, mushrooms, and pills; all kinds of small opiates and benzos. At 20 years old, I was doing Oxycontin every day.
I did opiates for 10 years and went to prison for four years. There was never any recovery in my story up until last year. 18 months before my last month of drinking in 2015, I gave up opiates. I kicked methadone.
In 2016, I got arrested again. I had to take a probation sentence to stay out of jail. During the 18 months of probation, I couldn't drink, but I did as much drugs as I wanted to because I wasn't getting tested for drugs
I tried to section myself in Massachusetts, but they wouldn't let me. Section 35 through the state is for substance abuse. They put you away for 30-90 days.
I called the union. They came to the hospital. While I was there talking to my union representative, I started getting a little bit of willingness to continue the journey. I've done Suboxone, Vivitrol, and methadone. I wanted to try it without medication.
I went to a program in Massachusetts. I drove into a 12-step program, and I started doing the work. By the time I left, I was much more aware of myself. I'm grateful that I was able to go to the treatment centers. Currently, I sponsor a couple of guys, helping them go through the steps.”
For those struggling:
“Surrender. Surrender doesn't mean giving up; it means giving up to change. Try to be willing, just a little bit. Be honest with yourself and with everyone else.”
