From another reactors comments: the song was offered to Patti but her producer told her it was a terrible song and refused to produce it for her. She went to the main songwriter Burt Bacharach and he agreed to produce it and he reached out to Michael McDonald. Patti sung the song alone and they sent the tape of the music to Michael. He recorded his part in California and sent the tapes back to Bacharach who put them both together into this masterpiece.
Patti shows incredible restraint here and let the song speak for itself, and that's one of the factors that make this work. It's so rare to have a match up of two singers of the comparable caliber and hear them do eveything just right. A small miracle of a song. A lightning in a bottle as they say.
This song came out in 1986. I recall seeing it on MTV a few times. It got plenty of radio play as well. She has such a powerful voice. Michael has such a distinctive voice. I was somewhat surplised and pleased that someone put these two together.
I love this video. It has been one of my favourites for a long time. These two powerhouse singers are so absolutely right together. It’s such a sad song but their voices make it so perfect. Love this. I agree they should just get together. Thanks Harri for such a great reaction. 👏👏🇨🇦
Harri, this song was a big hit before Patti and Michael had ever actually met each other. They met well after the songs release and performed it together for the first time on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show.
This is an extraordinary song and video from 1986, from Patti's 8th album Winner in You. Beautifully written song by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sayer, originally performed by Dionne Warwick. Patti's and Michael together, unbeatable with their spine chilling harmonies, charged with such emotion making you feel the video. 😢😢 Just delightful, with such beautiful orchestral backing. One of my favourite duets. Made it to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100's, Number 1 in Canada and Number 2 in the UK. Great reaction Harri, such a treat.😊 Thanks Harri. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Love The way it was shot. Did you notice that she folds up a letter or note and it appears on Michael’s table? Also the same packages are in both houses and they even share the same Cactus. Excellent Continuity! The Voices are beyond Great, they’re Extraordinarily! “Best Break-up Song Ever!”…..SanJoséBob
I piggyback on your loving energy towards two of America’s greatest ever writer/performers singer/songwriters…the older I get the more tears I cry, all in love and respect for the greatness of the moment, and honor for the artists.
There is something about this one..so special! The music, the instruments, the voices..put them together and you have perfection. My fav duet, tied with blue Velvet by Tony Bennett and KD Lang. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
One of my favorites....i hope you may have noticed as i did, Michael had a bag in hand to leave where he was....my thought he was going to find her in the city.....(i know hopeless romantic) .......
This LADY just has all ways sent me to the moon. I was able too see her in SEPTEMBER in 2023. All I can say CNN up front and Center, that was my Birthday Gift from my Best CNN friend of 33 years. She can still carry those notes, Incredible. Thank you for reacting…
@@HarriBestReactions i was shocked as well; Bacharach has SOME range; he wrote song in mid 80s, showing how his writing had evolved, i suppose? His broader catalog is from 60's and 70's obviously, song is an outlier of sorts i guess
Thanks so much for reacting to Patti Labelle. She is a rate once in a lifetime vocalist. Her range, power, and interpretation is uniquely Patti. She is definitely one of a kind. I find it amazing that she has almost as much power and range in her late 70"s. She not only has extraordinary range, but there are some songs that are rarely reacted to that are amazing. I really hope you will react to TWO of her greatest LIVE performances EVER: 1) it's a song rarely reacted to at all which shows a more classical side: "If You Love Me Hymne a' l'amoure! and 2) You are My Friend/What a Friend at the Essence Awards (I think year 2000) Truly these are 2 of her greatest live performances. Thanks so much
👍 You asked, “Why can’t they get back together?” Let me recommend, “Love Builds The Bridges” (Pride Builds The Walls) by the great Patty Loveless. I must go listen to her right now!
