December 18th, 1993. Michael "Second To" Nunn took on the No. 10 ranked Merqui Sosa aka "El Corombo" for the 4th defense of his WBA Super Middleweight Championship in Puebla, Mexico.
Prefight records; Nunn 41(27)-1, Sosa 22(18)-3-1.
In May 1991, James Toney scored a TKO11 win over then undefeated Michael Nunn who was relieved of his IBF Middleweight Title. After suffering his 1st career loss, Nunn moved up in weight and made his 168 pound debut with a TKO10 rebound over Randall Yonker to win the NABF Super Middleweight Title.
In September 1992, he became a 2 weight world champion by lifting the WBA World Super Middleweight Title from Víctor Córdoba via a controversial SD12.
Between January and April 1993, he successfully defended his WBA Crown 3x which included a dominant UD12 win in a rematch against Córdoba. For his 4th defense, he was up against the hard hitting Dominican fighting out of New York.
Going into his first world title fight, Sosa had no notable wins but he had mixed it up with a number of top fighters such as Tony Thornton & James Toney where he lost via close SD10 & SD12 respectively.
On the other hand, Nunn had prominent victories over the likes of Alex Ramos, Donald Curry, Frank Tate, Iran Barkley, Juan Roldan, Marlon Starling, Sumbu Kalambay & Víctor Córdoba (2x).
As a whole, the challenger was very courageous but fell short against the champion who masterfully outboxed him with pinpoint lefts and rights in a dazzling display of boxing skills.
Towards the end of round 7, Sosa was warned by referee Julio Cesar Alvarado for throwing Nunn out of the ring through the ropes and was later deducted a point in round 10 for rabbit punching after the bell.
After 36 minutes of Super Middleweight action, Michael Nunn retained his title and improved his record to 42(27)-1 via UD12 with scores of 116-113 & 116-112 (2x).
On August 8th 2019, 56 year old Nunn was released from federal prison after serving 13 years for conspiracy to distribute drugs back in May 2003. In the year that followed, he was sentenced to 292 months in prison after pleading guilty for paying USD200 to an undercover agent to purchase 2.2 pounds of cocaine which carried a street value of USD24,000 at that time.
Michael Nunn’s pro career spanned across 3 different decades; he made his pro debut back in December 1984 and fought his last fight in January 2002 before retiring with a final record of 58(37)-4.

Sosa was cool. James Toney and Roy Jones called him the hardest-hitting opponent they had ever fought.
