As a music critic in 1968, Michael
Nyman was the first to apply the word
“minimalism” to music. In the 1970s
he formed his amplified ensemble the
Michael Nyman Band. His compositional
style is formulated around strong
melodies, flexible yet assertive rhythms,
and precisely articulated ensemble
playing. He has composed operas
and concert music, but has reached
his widest audience by way of his
film scores, most famously for Peter
Programme Notes
Greenaway, with whom he collaborated
on eleven movies, and for his score for
The Piano.
Programme Note: If & Why are from an
anime version of The Diary of Anne Frank.
Nyman frequently recycled his music in
slightly altered forms. These two songs are
no exception, and can be heard in other
versions of his film work.
