It was such a pleasure to premiere this piece in Connecticut. It’s such a beautiful piece of music, and by far, Michael Pisaro’s music is some of the most relaxing music I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. This genre of music is so under appreciated, which is a shame.
I really like this. It's like nature has all of this musicality about it already, which the composer shapes somewhat minimally but still to great artistic effect.
It’s experimental/noise music. I was in the group who premiered this piece back in early 2016. It’s not meant to be listened to for tuneful-ness, but rather as a sort of meditation, or very beautiful natural noise. Even the intonation of the instruments is meant to align with natural harmonics (just intonation/temperament) rather than be in equal temperament. A lot of this sort of music is also left to chance, such that no performance is exactly the same as any other. Musicians are given time frames to play within and note choices so that they can choose what notes to play when or what sounds to make and for how long. As a result, there’s no rhythm, so it’s very free-flowing. It’s very relaxing. It’s not meant to be super formal, which you can see by the performers’ attire. It’s more like you just show up, close your eyes, and let your thoughts wander while the sound-world that’s created by the instruments and noise-making objects. It’s very relaxing, the most relaxing music I’ve ever played or listened to, but you have to let go of all the musical expectations and let yourself relax and enjoy the moment.
