@@KardboardKenny Much like Michael, Return of the Jedi was my first Star Wars movie experience and the Ewoks were not bad enough to make me dislike or hate the movie. As a four year old, I actually liked the Ewoks.
1977 Star Wars will always be my favorite. I was 10 when I saw it in the theater, and my life was changed forever as soon as I walked out of the theater.
I love rogue one. I felt like it had more weight to it than the entirety of this sequel trilogy. Getting the death star plans to the rebels just as darth is cutting them down one by one? Badass. As for the OG trilogy, for all the reasons you gave, return of the jedi's just MY personal favorite
Yeah I really like Rogue One. Its not perfect, not by a long shot, but I actually like how it recontextualized the OG Star Wars in a meaningful way by making the really convenient flaw in the Death Star a purposeful sabotage by a rebellion sympathizer within the Empire. I would've actually LOVED a slow burn, political thriller about Galen Erso trying to manipulate the construction of the death star to his advantage while trying to remain under the radar of his superiors. But what we got is fine too, because that space battle is second only to RotJ, its genuinely spectacular. Yeah the characters feel undercooked and kind of flat, but they were all likeabke in some way, especially k2so. It has plot problems but it seems like a movie made for fans who genuinely cared about the story of the original.
@@samgilley3160 It's not a really convenient flaw, and I don't get where people get that notion from, or why it needed to be addressed. It's a tiny, small, miniscule little exhaust port surrounded by guns, on a moon sized object. It's like trying to find one small carter amidst a sea of craters on the surface of the moon and hitting it with a bullseye. It was NEVER a "Convenient" target.
@@OpenMawProductions I disagree, I don't think it NEEDED to be addressed. I just think it's a neat recontextualization. It was kinda convenient that shooting a small exhaust port could blow up a station the size of a small moon. Its not a huge flaw or anything but I think its silly to pretend it isn't a tad convenient.
I was 6 when I saw ROTJ and like you one of my favorite parts was the fight over the sarlacc pit. Behind our kindergarten school was a huge sand Pit that everyone pretended to fall down and eaten by the creature. The nun had no idea what we were doing and was watching us with great confusion and awe. Every time my friends and cousins talk about it we laugh so hard. When I took my nephew to see force awakens and last Jedi I had hoped he would see something that he would remember like I did. But unfortunately not. It is a shame. But when I told him about that sand pit he laughs and calls me a dork. I tell him yes I am! Also more BV!!!
@@ReluctantWarrior I agree Erik and I don't care about nostalgia, what I care about is a story, and interesting characters. Last Jedi was the worst because it was subversive trash, reinventing a franchise does not mean destroying the foundation it was built on, that is what people with no imagination and daddy issues do. People that can only destroy, not create.
I like the final third of Rogue One .I dislike how the 2nd act is a remake of the first act - Rebels drag Jyn to planet to get info on Death Star, place is attacked, father/father figure dies, place blows up and they escape. The 2nd act is also entirely redundant. Nothing happens there that has any bearing on the plot AT ALL (note: Jyn's dad dying affects the plot about as much as Walrus Man having his arm chopped off affects the plot of Star Wars). Also, it's the Rebel attack that kills Galen - you'd think Jyn would be kinda mad at the Rebels for that...
Seeing Obi-Wan and Anakins relation in Clone Wars makes me rather sad we don’t get to see much of it in Attack of the Clones, it would have made the characters a lot more enjoyable at least.
Clone Wars should have been Episode 2, the Phantom Menace is just so detached from the rest of the trilogy that I feel like it should have been a side story. That way we would have had one over arching Darth Vader like villian throughout the prequels, we would have gotten Anakin the war hero and the relationship between him and Obi Wan developed more so it has more weight when it all falls appart, and General Grevious wouldn't have been a total joke.
@@williamcronshaw5262 Right but Ashoka ruins it from a canon and lore perspective because it's only a 3 yr period of time. Honestly I like some aspects of Clone Wars but I prefer the Genndy one for making Grievous more dangerous.
Never liked the fact they made the battle droids act goofy in Revenge of the Sith. That definitely could've been left out. I get they wanted comic relief in an otherwise darker movie, but c'mon. Also I feel Clone Wars makes up for the "buddy cop" dynamic missing from Attack of the Clones, but I agree it would've made sense to have it.
I’ve been told that in the lore, the reason the battle droids “act goofy” is because they were becoming more autonomous, but I get what you’re saying. I was 6 when I saw Revenge of the Sith in theaters, and even I thought it was weird that they talked and acted goofy...
@@coleschubert9868 You're definitely right about that of course, and it made that aspect of the movie make more sense, it was just really offputting the first time I saw it when it first came out.
I loved all the prequels and revenge of the sith was my favorite! This coming from a 55 year old man who saw the original trilogy in the theaters as they were meant to be seen!
That’s really interesting because I’ve heard a lot of fans say that the only reason people like the prequels is because they grew up watching them/nostalgia, but you’re someone who has seen both trilogies in theaters. What exactly do you like about the prequels?
revenge of the sith is easily a top 3 star wars film..this dude has no taste...despite its flaws it has so much action quotes memes plot and fanservice ..how can you not enjoy it?...that seems really dumb to say its your least favorite prequel..its easily the best thin since return of jedi came out in this franchise
I'm 52 now so can relate totally. I saw Star Wars 17 time in the cinema as a 9yr old. I too loved the prequels and like them equally. The sequels had amazing props, costumes, ships, etc. but were crap.
Prequels are not understood by people and Hayden acting is bad people say he trying do a vader and Anakin together at some parts and his acting was pretty good episode 1 not great episode 2 ight Episode 3 is the best
I really liked the point you brought up about the costume design for the Jedi in the prequels. Admittedly, it was my first time hearing that argument, and I thought it made a lot of sense. That concept art for how the Jedi could've looked in the prequels would've been so gratifying to see on screen, and added a more nuanced layer of cohesion between the prequels and the original trilogy, rather than just copying Obi-Wan's desert robes. He was in hiding during the original films after all, and even taking the extra precaution of using a pseudonym, so it doesn't make sense narratively for his character to undermine that by continuing to dress exactly like a Jedi. The only problem is, now that it's been brought to my attention, I'll never be able to unsee it!
I wanted to add to Reys "Jedi clothes" from TLJ. what came to mind when you showed the concept piece from TPM was Starkillers outfit at the end of Force Unleashed from the 360 and ps3 versions.
I just watch the prequels for irony's sake. For a good laugh with friends. The original trilogy is where it's at, and where it always will be. Nothing beats "The Empire Strikes Back". As always, great video guys!
If you're priest; do you wear white? Represent the light of God? Or black represent the result of darkness. Death. You wear black if someone has died, you wear white portray the ensemble of lords light. Angels wear white, demons are black. Or may I say red.
I have never seen a priest wear a thing like Luke's black costume. It more looks like a dignitary, stuffy, no frills, tailored. It doesn't make me think of any spiritualist ether. Just clothes that could be worn anywhere and not be noticed. What are they doing, trying to not be seen.
I have to admit, I'm surprised that "Revenge of the Sith" is your least favorite prequel. It's actually my favorite. It's structure is similar to "Empire's" in that the big battle is at the beginning while the more personal conflict is saved for the end. That said, I respect your opinion as always. And I'm right there with you on "Rogue One" and the original trilogy. I do hope that "The Rise of Skywalker" is at least an adequate ending to the Skywalker saga. But whatever happens, the franchise will continue, and hopefully have some more home-runs like "Rogue One" and "The Mandalorian."
I remember in school one day, my English teacher asked us to give a short history of the Star wars movie stories, one student began to speak and said "In episode 1 The Phantom Menace--" and he just looked at him shook his head and said "No." Then he asked another student the same question and said "In Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope" Our teacher nodded in admiration and smiled. Respect for the real start of the movies.
I really like the Rise of Skywalker poster, The one where Kylo and Rey is mirrored, I suspect that will be the only thing I will like about that movie.
I just discovered this channel and I'd loved the interaction between you and Lil Vader. I feel the same way about certain movies that make me say "Why?" And I loved what you said about Bionic Six. I loved your sarcasm about the toys and you keep saying " the animation is good" which is true. Plus you got a new subscriber. Keep it up
Another thing that some people find good about “Attack of the clones” are the kaninoan, the long neck aliens that made the clones, apparently some people found them kind of hot and sexy, I even remembered someone confessing that they got a quote: “Must admit I got a rather embarrassing bulge the very first time I saw the Kaminoans watching "Attack of the Clones" in a theater.”
You know. California experienced a wave of nine quakes on Christmas Eve. A 200ft (60m) tall tree fell and crushed a man in the California Redwoods that day. The Endor scenes were filmed there. Maybe nature itself is begining to display its displeasure regarding current events.
In theory I like the gesture of restoring the Lightsaber, but Rey really should have gotten her own Lightsaber. It's so weird that she is still using Ankin/Lukes first Lightsaber, her making her own would have meant so much more to her character.
I think I would have preferred the black outfits for the Jedi in the prequels. Anakin's ghost in ROTJ got the "tattooine style" robes, so maybe that was deciding factor.
These are the things I could say nice about every Star Wars movie: 1. The Phantom Menace...Darth Maul introduction. He looks so cool and far more menacing than Palpatine! 2. Attack of the Clones...Purple light saber!!! You go, Master Windu! 3. Revenge of the Sith...Amydala giving birth to twins without Darth Vader and Palpatine knowing about it.! 4. A New Hope...Princess Leia rules!! Even Darth Vader was not able to break her will and scan her brain! 5. The Empire Strikes Back...Darth Vader's "I am your father!" reveal! 6. Return of the Jedi...The feeling of enjoyment seeing cute and cuddly teddy bears defeat a far more advanced military! 7. The Force Awakens...uhh, let's just say BB-8 will do! 8. The Last Jedi...Yeah, I agree with Mike with regards to Rei's costume! 9. The Rise of Skywalker...The diabolical laugh of Palpatine! 10. Solo: A Star Wars Story...the last gambling scene wherein Han wins the Millennium Falcon! 11. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story...Donnie Yen's dialogues are gold! I can't wait for Mike's "Saying something worse about every Star Wars movie".
I agree the original trilogy are timeless classics. I don't hate the prequels. The weakest part of them for me was the directing. As for the Disney trilogy. The Boycott will be quite operational when Episode 9 arrives!!
As far as Attack of the Clones I also felt they helped build up Annakins forth coming fall. I enjoyed it a lot for the introduction of the clone army and Dookus possible turning on Sidious by trying to convince Kenobi which was expanded upon in the EUs comics and novels. Thanks for the content.
Totally agree, the Phantom Menace always stands out as my favourite prequel movie. The Pod race audio and sound design makes a fantastic sequence. For three quarters of the sequence it has no musical score at all. It relies on the intuitive sound effect designs which really puts you in the driver's seat. Shame it never won its nomination for best sound design at the Oscars the preceding. 💥💥💥💥💥
Now say something nice about other Lucas projects. THX-1138 - Robert Duvall is fantastic, and the final shot when he is bathed in light by the sunrise is heart wrenchingly beautiful. Willow - Val Kilmer is hilarious and Joanne Whahley is gorgeous. American Graffiti - a snap shot of time in modern America.
I love all 8 (haven’t seen 9 yet), but I love them for different reasons. I love the originals for being genuinely good movies. I love Phantom Menace for the camp. I love 2 and 3 for the nostalgia (I grew up with them) and for seeing the Jedi in action. I love 7 and 8 for a return to practical effects and a return to a lived in world which was lacking in the prequels.
There's a moment in the "From Star Wars to Jedi" doc when Hamill's in a fitting for his black outfit for Jedi. Lucas is there, too, and mentions that (paraphrasing from memory) "this time he's dressed more Jedi-like," so, more like a police uniform and less like Tattooine clothing. I wish Lucas remembered (or kept to) his own words and design direction... Great video. Honest, fair.
Star Wars, '77 is still the best film watching experience for me. The best! It's the message and the meaning behind it. (Empire, it's the execution!:)) I even love the stuff in the desert; It really tells you what kind of movie it is and what's important to it as a film. The smallest of interpersonal struggles with galactic-scale consequences hidden with them. It's all there, spelled out in the most sophisticated story telling. An absolute genius film! :)
The Anakin Tusken camp scene should have continued by pulling the camera back until all you are seeing is Anakins Blue Lightsaber flashing around the camp.
Phantom Menace is my favorite prequel as well. To me, it felt the most like a Star Wars movie. I'm not sure why, perhaps it was Liam Neesons performance. With him gone, the other two movies felt like they were missing something.
Whew, I was nervous about the prospect of saying something nice about the last 2 desecrations without being sarcastic but you did well focusing on 1 costume and 1 prop. Well done as always. If it was me I'd just want to skip commenting on _Star Wars_ and _The Empire Strikes Back_ because they are so otherworldly perfect I've been saying nice things about them for decades. Phantom Menace: Sebulba is one of the coolest alien designs ever. AotC: The chase at the beginning was cool. RotS: Darth Vader was complicit in mass genocide so I liked that George Lucas got shocking with his turn to evil. (killing kids)
I think he gave more positives that most people can say about last jedi. Tbh I have nothing but respect for this man and this channel hes a legend here on RU-vid
I was ok with the force awakens. And when it ended the way it did gave me so much hope for 8 and those hopes were dashed in the first 10 minutes when Luke IN HIS JEDI ROBES tosses his FATHERS saber and goes to change his clothes and proceeded to tell Rey he has been cut of from the force! Even though he is on a Jedi temple , in Jedi robes, guarding the sacred texts??? Ya!
The fan edits of the prequels improve those movies considerably. Pure Lucas needs reigning in by an editor, which is what those movies were missing . I personally recommend the Hal 9000 edits. The sequel trilogy is beyond saving. No amount of editing can fix that canon flushing mess.
Michael, I too was a 5 year old kid in a theater for the very first time to see Return of the Jedi. What I remember and love most about that movie were the space battle sequences. The attack on the Death Star 2 was and still is one of my favorite scenes. I never really cared much for being a Jedi as a kid. I wanted to be a Pilot. Heck, my favorite character in Star Wars is the Millennium Falcon and there she was, leading the attack and winning the day!
I weirdly find the deleted scenes in the prequels the best ones. On an old DVD of AOC there's a scene where Padme takes Anakin to her parents house where she grew up. In ROTS there's a scene where they form the rebel alliance with Mothma.
I think there’s just some overlap between desert clothing and Jedi outfits. We see this due to the fact that quite a bit of Jedi clothing seems to be based on Samurai formal wear. Specifically the details on Rey’s outfit and the production art you showed. The shoulder pieces are clearly inspired by the Kataginu that Samurai would wear during formal events. The overlap comes from both the Japanese and Middle Eastern cultures wearing variations of robes with cloaks overlaying them.
"Attack of the Clones"-my favorite part was Yoda/Dooku fight. My only problem with that fight scene is it's way to short. I have to agree, that Rogue One is the best Star Wars film of the latest batch.
I love almost every Star Wars movie so that’s easy for me: The Phantom Menace: ummmm.... the podrace and the lightsaber duel was cool? Attack of the Clones: let’s see... I liked Obi-Wan vs. Jango and the arena battle was pretty good I guess. Revenge of the Sith: The opera scene and the last 10 minutes or so were really great. A New Hope: everything is fantastic. The Empire Strikes Back: one of my favorite movies of all time, it’s consistently amazing. Return of the Jedi: almost everything is really great. The Force Awakens: ditto to Return of the Jedi but even better. The Last Jedi: lots of things, especially Yoda’s appearance and the badass scene where Rey and Kylo fight Praetorian guards, among others. Rogue One is generally great and Solo had it’s share of moments. Dunno about The Rise of Skywalker yet... Edit: there are all kinds of things I love about The Rise of Skywalker. Listing them all would make this long post even longer. Plus, spoilers. I like it more than The Last Jedi (which I love), less than The Force Awakens (which I really love).
This may get me in trouble. I saw Star Wars as a little kid and I didn't want to see it again to preserve the memory, but my best friend got me to watch it again when the prequels came out and... I thought that the dialogue was poor and Hamill and Fisher's performances were amateurish.
I knew Empire was gonna be the most praised 😂 i actually met the author of the strange case of origami Yoda and he said Empire was his favorite, too. Also i love your large size Vader figure. I have that one, too.
Hey Michael, thanks for taking the extra time to show Obi-Wan's original costume in the [McQuarrie?] paintings for the Phantom Menace. A picture says a thousand words. And, of course, you insight into the things we love is always appreciated. Have a good one
Every word you said about ESB could have been my own words. And about Ian McDiarmid in ROTJ; it's hard to believe he was only 37 years old at the time.
I think writing/dialogue wise on scene in Revenge of the Sith would be the senate scene, with Palpatines galactic empire speech, mainly Padmé’s line “so this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause ”
I remember hearing your take on TFA on another channel, so I knew what to expect there. I had nearly the same experience with TFA. That portion of the film was quite good, but I found the rest of it to be rather poor. If there's one issue with Empire Strikes Back, it's in communicating the passage of time in the middle portion, when the Falcon is on the run and Luke is on Dagobah. It's not a big issue. I looked into it once and recall seeing Irvin Kershner say that it's the one thing he wished he could have done better. I think it's easy to overlook just how long a period of time that's supposed to be. The lightsaber battle toward the end is fantastic and the sets are stunning. While ESB is superior as a film, my favorite has always been ROTJ. One of the reasons is because I love what Luke had become. The lightsaber battle is stunning here as well. I love how they switched back and forth from Luke's internal struggle on the Death Star and lightsaber fight to the spectacular space battle going on outside along with the shield generator on the ground. I also love how stretched out it is as the movie did an excellent job building the tension to both climaxes of the lightsaber duel and the shields coming down so that the rebel ships had a chance. They really did an amazing job putting the rebel fleet in a desperate situation("It's a trap!!"). I'm not sure I know what all the changes to Jedi were, so I ought to look into that or refresh my memory. I think episode three benefits a lot from the amount of screen time Ian McDiarmid got. His performance was quite memorable to me at the time. What you had to say about it was interesting as well. I agree, that lightsaber fight devolved a bit and I didn't like that the battle was basically competing with the setting. I also agree about episode one. Qui Gonn and Obi Wan together was good stuff. I liked Liam Neeson's performance in that one generally.
So funny. The only black series figure I got from the sequel trilogy is Rey. That outfit is awesome. She looks great. Too bad it ends there. They brought back the Jakku outfit. Which makes no sense. But anyway.
I actually really like rogue one! I liked how they all died at the end. It wasn’t expected and really showed the sacrifice it took to get the Death Star plans
I like how Michael can talk like a real adult about pop-culture stuff. Like his little comment about how none of the prequels were particularly watchable, just a sober, cogent way to frame that up. I don't know if it's just everybody on the internet is fake because they have nothing to say but need to say something for money, or they need to say something flashy to get attention, or it's some absorbed "voice" they think is how you're supposed to write and talk in media, or maybe they're really all weird people and if you met them in real life, they'd seem strange, but it's refreshing when he does these types of videos.
