watching this guy play the guitar is so mesmerizing. I know he doesnt really care to show his playing when its not on stage, the feeling for him is everything and the feeling on stage brings out his best. I saw UFO in chicago in 1979 (i think) and michael was all in black, never really moved, and played the stuffing out of his guitar, it was amazing.
i wanna say they had the Outlaws opening for them... and the weird thing is I saw the Scorpions for the first time the same year at the fair, for free.. never heard of them at that time... i think they were promoting Love Drive... they were incredible. who knew there was a connection to the 2 bands, one I loved and one I just discovered. still trips me out. lol
I also would say NOT fastest. Maybe not even proficient (I nominate Steve Morse for that). Now his incredible sense of melody WITH speed is off the charts.
My all time favorite guitarist. I heard him play in UFO when I was about 7 years old and I have followed him ever since. The Blonde bomber. Someday I hope to meet him. I love all hos music especially with Robin Mcauley
Met Michael in 92 was touring with Mcauly. I had some connections played in a band but got backstage after the show we talked for about 45 minutes. I had heard he could be kind of an azzhole but he was actually really cool, he actually me hold the original Flying~V the one he's holding in this video and he was showing me about the headstock and how it had been repaired many times with drumsticks. Was just a really iconic memory for me, I was a fledgling young 22yr old guitar player and meeting him was just the most awesome thing at the time, i wasn't all geeked out or nothing it was just awesome to meet someone that influenced me so much. I've been blessed and lucky enough to meet most of the guitar players that i idolized growing up have been very lucky indeed.
Agreed, Michael is nice and unfortunately pretty naive, especially in his younger years. He suffered some abuse from his bandmates (most notably Phil Mogg) that makes him pretty paranoid, abusing drugs and have some trust issues in 80's - 90's. Good thing he's cleared up his act and touring with Michael Schenker Fest now! Love you Michael!
@@jean-pierreburgogne2707 some stories i read said that phil sometimes badmouth and even shove michael at times due being a youngest and foreign member of UFO.
Thanks Axe! Shared it on our Facebook fan page; Matthias Jabs/MJ Guitars/Scorpions Fan Page and on Robin Mc Auley's page today. Things like this are so very fun!
Hello 👋 cristy How're you doing, it's been a long journey, and I'm nothing without amazing fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness, All love to you and yours ❤️
Actually, That guitar in the video and he had a second one that was the exact same...we're custom guitars...they were not Gibsons...I know the guy who made those guitars for him...Kenny from Performance Guitar in Los Angeles.
davy j.y. Oh yes they should have been! Saw them during the Def Leppard "Hysteria tour" back when i was 16,first gig ever,i was frantic...and gutted that they were openning for Def Lep,don't get me wrong,i love them as well but Shenker on his own's more powerful and unique than their both guitarist,he's a legend like EVH and Yngwie! Hello from France :)
I remember seeing him in Wolverhampton. They put out his flying v and it was like shit he's gonna be there any minute now. Lights out and he rocked the shit out of that guitar. Amazing
Psychological problems abound with Michael Schenker. He went through depression, all kinds of things, his ability to play also suffered then returned in last 10 years or so. His interviews are revealing, its like you're watching about 3 or 4 different characters on after the other, at different times in his life. Sadly it looks as if he may never have got himself sorted out.
Lifelong MS fan here. Around 8:22 you can faintly hear "F***" when he frets the wrong note. Love that it happens to the best. Makes me feel better about my playing.
I got hooked on UFO as a teen. As a young guitar player I also figured out what I liked so much about UFO. Obviously Michael's guitar playing and sound. At 61 I still like it. I actually got to work with them in the UFO prime period with UFO at a concert in West Virginia of all places. I was the union steward, a very young one of the stagehands union. What a great day that was. I agree about the 50 watt marshall. 100 watts is to much. Tube amps are great. I just played in small and midsized clubs. Even a 50 watt was to much so i used a fender deluxe reverb. Bands would bring 50 and 100 watt amps in the bars and it pushed the volume up so loud that you couldn't possibly get a good mix with clarity. I was also a young learning audio engineer and figured these things out fast. It doesn't matter how good you are if the finished product is garbage because the musicians didn't have the sense to keep the volume at a reasonable level for the sound person to be able to create a good mix. Great days none the less. We all lived and learned.
I too, am a huge fan of UFO. I listen to them, nearly every night. Him and Phil Mogg, made the whole band great. It was a shame, they couldn’t make it work.
@@lauremehrkens5891 They made a lot of money. They became multi millionaires. Certainly enough to live comfortable if they had any sense. Phil and Michael are worth over 5 million each easy. the rest of the hit the band while Shenker was with them did quite well also. Loved that band and that live album is incredible. They are a live band.
Michael claims he was never financially independent until he went solo and I believe him. That's a rough business. They were not paying him properly. He was young and didn't have his own agent or anything. He claims he never owned any property until he went solo after the first couple years when he was the boss and every one else was a hired gun. Makes sense to me and why would he lie about it. He got paid to play gig with the Scorpions and pretty much the same with UFO but he was doing a lot of the writing and got getting any royalty checks. that's where you need to be. Then you have income all year even if you aren't touring. So writing is the way to go. Copywrite your songs.
@@lauremehrkens5891 Have you seen these videos, this is with Hans and Frans frorm the Scorps. Don 't know who the vocalist is rehearsing with them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BqJ9SNvyt8c.html

Absolutely nothing more, much more less... Michael is the most accomplished guitarist that came out from the 70s, nobody's like him in terms of unmistakable tone, melodic taste, songwriting, creativity and consistency throughout the decades 🤘🤘
Nice to see an interview i havent seen already! I love everything Micheal Schenker! Crazy I guess for a middle age woman.I will someday see him live! Its on my bucket list!Anyway, thanx for the upload! Cheers!
I got what you meant! Lol! Your lucky to have seen them! Michael was in Toronto in January this year, but that's as far as he came into Canada, and I'm on the west coast! Seems if you want to see anyone great, you have to go to Europe.the old bands still actually tour and do festivals!
Fantastic!Must have been great!! I would love to be a part of that kind of day!!You get the music, and you get to meet them. Why did you get rid of your guitar!! I'm just teaching myself!,got an acoustic,! So far I'm liking it other than the sore fingers!Lol! I figured maybe I was to old,but my 20 year old son assures me I'm not,so I will give it a shot.Cheers MetallicBill!
🎸🙋♀️Michael Schenker’s always been my fav guitarist. I’ve played guitar since I was a toddler. Played in 80s bands. Still playing. Too old is something lazy people made up. Lol
One of the best for sure. UFO certainly had their best years with Michael. He defined that band. Same with the Scorpions although they still had a good following with out him. Just not as big. I went to a concert in Pittsburgh to see UFO and it was when Michael had left the band. I didn't know it and the entire audience didn't either. UFO certainly didn't advertise it. Chapman had taken over for him. the theatre was pretty well full. It was the Stanley Theatre in the downtown cultural district. A big theatre. When UFO hit the stage before the first song was over more than half of the crowd were on their feet screaming Shenker, Shenker, Shenker and booing and screaming where is Michael. Phil stopped the show and actually and begged the audience to give Paul a chance. Every one calmed down and it was decent show but it wasn't UFO with Shenker. I was disappointed. I did like the band so i stayed but I would not have bought tickets if I had known he wasn't going to be the touring guitarist with them. I suppose this around 78 maybe a bit later. i cold look it up but why bother. First tour with Chapman after Michael left. Chapman is a very good player but he doesn't have that special magic the Shenk has. I also worked a few UFO concerts as a stagehand while Shenker was with them. I could tell some good stories about one of those shows in particular but i won't.
I saw UFO with Paul Chapman soon after Michael left the band in the spring of 1979, the opening act was Judas Priest, supporting Killing Machine/Hell Bent for Leather! There was supposed to be another band called Wireless that couldn't play because there was an Airline strike and their equipment did not arrive. Judas Priest got to play a longer set than they would have and just brought the house down! We were all a little worn out for UFO but they were still great and Pete Way was all over that stage. Most of the people thought that he was the lead guitar player! This was when I was fifteen and happened a block away from my house. A life changing event.
Well, maybe the other guys in the band were average but you can't talk of Robin and Michael, they were and still are even today a couple of really good looking men! Michael was called "the blond bomber" not only for his guitar skills!
Great moments on the guitar there from Schenker while he's playing by himself. Lord know how that talent turned into such a terrible, overblown, schlock period of music for that band. I blame incompetent record companies pouring money into the wrong areas. That and the weird "lifestyle-pop" musical taste of McAuley.
Lol he is definitely not the Mark. He had nothing on Mr Paul Chapman. In my opinion and we all have one.hes definitely overrated. There's a lot of guitar players that where way better than this guy.
