@@AndyNyle In fact, in this area of music MS and RB are my favourite ones, different but equally gifted and creative. I would never agree to put one above another: just Michael and Ritchie without any ranking between them. Or... I forgot somebody. Sometimes I think there has been another one on par of them, if not greater. An absolute, astral guitar god known to not so many. Listen to Electric Sun albums: he is German, called Ulrich Roth (performing as Uli John Roth) and he was MS's direct successor in the Scorpions.

Being in The Scorpions at the young age of 15 and having released "Lonesome Crow" (1972) just hearing Michael play you knew he was going to be something big. UFO recognized Michael's talent and he transformed the band into one of the 70's best melodic rock acts of the decade. His solos ("Rock Bottom", "Let It Roll", "Shoot Shoot", "Too Hot To Handle") were jaw dropping.

I think EVH did more to expand the instrument’s sonic vocabulary than everybody else of his generation by popularising so many then unique rule breaking techniques but Michael was a player of extraordinary emotional articulacy , original tone and melodic awareness who was also in a class of his own…His compositions like Into the Arena, Captain Nemo, There Has to be Another Way, etc were like emotionally structured storytelling narratives which were just beautiful and extraordinary. And at the time when the rest of the guitar playing world were all trying to copy Eddie and be clones of him Michael was one of the very few players who pre dated Edward and kept his own original identity as a a player…Michael was a great inspiration to me as a player myself going right back to the mid 1970s when he was the engine which made UFO fly.

First saw him with UFO when they opened for Rush in 1977. So insane, when people watch him on video, they have zero concept of how loud he was, and yet how clean. Great songwriter. Listen to Force It or Lights Out and many songs he is playing lead from start to finish at different volumes. Many don't know that he wrote most of UFO's best songs. I've noticed over the years that my tone choices and the way I set up my pedals is unconsciously trying to mimic him. So I sound exactly like MS, if he had zero talent. Also Force It is the best rock album of all time, all other answers are wrong. Nice footage man and great sound on the video.

I started taking classical guitar lessons at age 12, 1974, right around then saw UFO, Phenomenon support tour on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Michael sounded great and looked cool. Rode my bike several miles to buy Phenomenon album the next day, and later the same for Force It. I learned most of my rock playing by ear from Michael. Of course Iommi, Lifeson, Trower, Box and Nugent too, but mostly from the great Michael Schenker.

I loved UFO. But when Michael came out with the first MSG or solo album it was obvious that he was extending the amount of guitar playing that was not in songs before. And I loved him getting back w/UFO for Walk On Water...that is WOW. and saw them live. such a noise from an audience with a median age of 37? And still today he is tossing out the melodies right and left. So, I believe that the solo or 1st MSG period was the turning point for the rest of his career. Check out 2023 at Rockpalast recording. Still great.

Once i started learning my way, Michael was a huge influence. Bought Phenomenon days after hearing Rock Bottom on KSAN SF. all in there after. Saw him with UFO for Force It at Winterland, Keystone PA in '84 then Heritage Theater Campbell in '15. Great every time. Lucky enough to gig some UFO, last in '05 with Too Hot To Handle. 2 V's now (IBZ RR Sr, Cort Arrow). Should be three,,,i should have bought that import Dean Retro MSG V i saw in '07. Time is tight. btw, Michael was right,,,,Leslie West did play a V but mostly for slide. ha, i recall an interview in '72 (cover story, first GP i ever had) where he said he took the neck pick up out and used the cavity as an ashtray,,,,i hope he was joking. y'all knew this, i know. I saw them for Black Out and love the Uli era too.OK, LoveDrive was great. I knew Michael could be tempermental so was expecting the worst in '15 when he was having problems with one of his guitars. He had 4 ready to go,,,I'll call them Yin and Yang, Gold Foil, Kaliedascope and MSG. He started off with Y&Y. Sounded great but during i believe the second song, he breaks a string. it's cool, hands it to a tech and plays i believe GF. Plays tune and gets Y&Y back. Sounds killer but starts acting up again,,,,output jack....He's frustrated... I'm thinking 'this is it,,,he's going off..." Walks behind a screen.... Calmly walks back on stage with something else (can't recall what). Still ruled. As a testament to the sound at The Heritage Theater, Y&Y really did sound the best. Still killer kleen thru...Man, i read all these guitars were stolen just months later. what a bringdown. Rock on.

A good compilation. But the only thing I didn't like was after Michael talks about doing the double live album Live at Budokan you put up the END of MSG where Michael is playing a gem, "Lipstick Traces" from UFO's 1st album. Cool But I saw them in 84 w/Gary in Chicago on the Built to Destroy Tour. It fell apart and I guess he was contracted again for Japan. Because Christ Glen left, Gary was replaced by awful Ray Kennedy on vocals and that was it. Cozy sought the $$$ and he left after Budokan or after that tour and they once again got a Rainbow member Graham Bonnet because Gary left; and also Paul Raymond on keys and guitar too. Assault Attack was produced by Martin Birch and that was the best sounding album, Bonnet flashed onstage and gets kicked out and Gary is back for Reading-they were headliners! So, it's a jumble to skip to the last line-up there. Once again, Michael's burnt out and comes back with a partner...McCauley. And thus was able to retain the MSG name McCauley-Schenker Group. I've seen it before but the Japanese bit is funny because Michael is speaking with his English accent. He has been around the world so so many times. A legend of the 80's 70's too and still to this day. Amen.

I saw UFO in Louisville in about 1979. I’m not sure if that was the night they were recording strangers in the night because I know they recorded in Louisville and maybe Chicago a couple of places but they were awesome. I’ve never seen a guitar player up close like that… not one that played like Michael did.. his phrasing and placement was really inspiring for anybody trying to play the guitar he does it different than other people.. it’s not necessarily blue based or based he just does it the way he does it and it’s very interesting as a musician to watch someone like that play

He had an accident during early 90s? Cancelled the show in fresrag ca. I had my ticket but had little interest Great white . I was pissed didnt even go. I couldnt sit through another great white set list.I probably disslike schenkar for having a singer. I wanted Deja vu pleasurett (i cant remember name? instrumental shit.

I love Michael Schenker's playing, but I cant stand him McAuley/Schenker days! That's when I stopped listening to him. Give me Gary Barden any day of the week.

Great video! Michael Schenker is a tremendous Teutonic talent … terrific tone, taste and melodic sense - his work with UFO was fantastic and he elevated Scorpions Lovedrive to another level. I was lucky to see him play live on the first two MSG tours :)
