Rich has come back from his holiday for this and why wouldn’t he? But will his guest turn up this time? The bad news, if he doesn’t, is that Nish Kumar is ill... there’s no jeopardy here, obviously he turns up or there’d be no podcast. The guest is the fantastic UFOologist Michael Sheen.
The pair discuss why the best bit has been missed out of the new War of the Worlds, how Michael would get inside Richard, finding out you’re not in a film when you get to the premiere, the big questions raised by the film Passengers and whether its worth having a robot with no downstairs, a missed Pointless opportunity and an audacious quiz show plan and what motivated Sheen’s decision to reconnect with his childhood home of Port Talbot. It’s funny, interesting with a strong homoerotic charge. Plus they talk about Tron. What more do you want?

Hello Richard Herring, I'm writing this very formally because it's a big deal to me. I'm 30 years old. I've been absolutely enamoured with comedy since I was a bored little kid in a council house in Wheathampstead with nothing to do but watch cable TV. I was seldom supervised and mainly watched Live TV, play UK, Bravo, Paramount and MTV. Comedy, music and literature have always been my closest companions. While the neglect I suffered has brought on long-term negative consequences for me emotionally, it also imbued a sense of intellectual freedom and autonomy that most people aren't afforded at a young age. Anyway, I first came across you on This Morning With Richard Not Judy, and ever since I've felt a fairly intense yet inexplicable sense of disdain for you. (Stick with me, this gets better) Acquaintances I've had throughout the years have always expressed surprise that I'm not a fan of yours. I've been massively into Stewart Lee ever since he went solo (I promise, the pay off is coming...) and have always thought of him as some kind of genius. So, I found RLSTP a couple of years ago and started watching it and enjoying it. I put this down to the quality of the guests you have on the show rather than anything to do with you. I then got really into it and decided you were just okay. Around this time I got a job as the manager of The Waffle House in St Albans where I served you and wanted to say, "You're Richard Herring" but restrained myself. By this point, I wouldn't say I disliked you anymore. When I watched your interview with Matt Lucas, I realised that you are, in fact, the genius. Stewart Lee is a whinging manboy whose negative perceptions of everyone and everything don't do anything for anyone. He's actually just a bit of a bastard, wielding his intellect like some kind of phallic symbol. Hearing the way you speak to Lucas; the mutual respect and admiration between the two of you, was illuminating. The honesty and unbridled, raw emotion that you display and encourage in all of your guests, not just Lucas, is inspirational and moving. You're deeply intelligent and give an insight into the work you do with a DIY style that I am sure will encourage countless people to follow their dreams. I probably liked you all along but was blindsided by how open you are. I struggle to be open, myself, so maybe I was jealous? Who knows. I thought I disliked Sara Pascoe too but that was definitely jealousy... I've stopped working as a restaurant manager now and begun a career writing professionally, which is going unbelievably well. I never thought that someone like me could follow my dreams, but here I am. I wanted to say thank you for making me challenge myself and for showing me how to be open and the importance of hard work. I'm going to publish my first novel next year and don't think I'd be in this place if it weren't for you. It seems like a million people have developed a similar podcast to you, celebrities interviewing other celebrities etc. None of them (except maybe Adam Buxton) are as moving or sapient as yours. In the long run - in the annuls of history - I believe that you'll be the one out of you and Stewart who is remembered and revered. All the very best Imogen
@Herring1967
@Herring1967 5 лет назад
Thanks Imogen. Good luck with the novel and thanks for the nice waffles (on my birthday if I remember correctly). Glad you've come round to me eventually. You will doubtless find out that people have passionate and opposing views on your work, but it's always pleasing when someone who didn't get you later gets you. Our hearts and minds are ever changing (or should be in an ideal world). I appreciate you writing to let me know.
@imogensharma
@imogensharma 5 лет назад
@@Herring1967 I didn't know it was your birthday, congratulations for existing for a round number of years! Thank you for your reply. Maturity and perspective are big contributing factors in my slow-burning appreciation for you, I'm fairly certain. I do hope that one day I'm in a position where someone who questions my work can then go on to decide it's some of the best they've seen later on. Aye, admitting to a change of heart or mind is the only way we carry on growing. I'm going to come and see you in Glasgow next month because I put my money where my mouth is :D

@@jumbo4billion Yeah, exactly. I think he had a difficult childhood and he's not let go of the sadness. Probably why I could relate to him as a young person. This is an example where the longer format chat works exceptionally well. It would never get made on the short-attention span main TV channels because they think that viewers wouldn't stick with it in enough numbers.
