Shermer and Prothero discuss:
• flat earth theories and how we know the earth is round,
• hollow earth theories and how we know it’s not hollow,
• the return of Ptolemy and an earth-centered solar system model (and how we know it’s wrong),
• how science deals with anomalies, fringe claims, and challenges to the orthodoxy,
• whether humans were in the San Diego area 130,000 years ago,
• how consensus is achieved in science (and the messy road to get there),
• from Newton to Einstein and what ultimately determines if a theory is true or not,
• flood myths and what causes such stories to arise in some cultures but not others,
• catastrophism vs. uniformitarianism in geology,
• the age of the earth and how geologists determined it,
• the myth of Atlantis and what Plato really intended with his account,
• biblical accounts of the world and how we should read the book as literature, not science,
• how science won the evolution-creation wars,
• science denial and how to deal with it, and
• the real-world consequences of denying science.
Dr. Donald R. Prothero has taught geology for over 33 years as Professor of Geology at Occidental College in Los Angeles, and Lecturer in Geobiology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, and currently at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA. He earned M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in geological sciences from Columbia University in 1982. He is currently the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of 33 books and over 250 scientific papers, including five leading geology textbooks and three trade books as well as edited symposium volumes and other technical works. He is on the editorial board of Skeptic magazine, and in the past has served as an associate or technical editor for Geology, Paleobiology and Journal of Paleontology. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, the Paleontological Society, and the Linnaean Society of London, and has also received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Science Foundation. In 1991, he received the Schuchert Award of the Paleontological Society for the outstanding paleontologist under the age of 40. He has also been featured on several television documentaries, including episodes of Paleoworld (BBC), Prehistoric Monsters Revealed (History Channel), Entelodon and Hyaenodon (National Geographic Channel) and Walking with Prehistoric Beasts (BBC).
This dialogue was recorded on October 28, 2020 as part of the Science Salon Podcast series hosted by Michael Shermer and presented by The Skeptics Society, in California.

I very suddenly realised toward the end of the interview that there was a real-looking cat (stuffed toy?) on the back of the guest's chair. It reminded me of reading The Invisible Gorilla (good book). Now I am going to have to go back through the video to see if, at some point, a live cat actually moves/appears. Once I spotted it, I could not take my gaze from it, but it did not so much as twitch, despite the guest's bouncing around in the chair and being very loud. I am going to bet that I it looks exactly the same at the start as it does the end. Anyone want to make a dollar betting me? EDIT I owe you each a dollar.

Hi Michael & Skeptic staff -- I'm H.H. Løyche, using pseudonym on YT, because none in the English speaking parts of the universe can pronounce my real name. Totally agree, the little cat is immensely cute! Having over the years talked with many beloning to variety of religious convictions, it is my impression that a major reason why some have difficulties giving up creation myths and cosmological ideas to the benefit of scientific theory, origins in the fear that as a consequence they must abandon religion and 'higher' meaning altogether -- including 'religious' concepts such as compassion, love, and the ethical lessons by Muhammed, Jesus or Buddha (more important than the fact that they were historical persons), or what can also be called humanistic values. However, neither religion nor science have monopoly in that area, and as most folks can participate debating it without disagreeing too severely, it is a good starting point for debating the rest. There are of course also those, who occupy with religion or science from a economical/political and even narcissistic (occultism, new age, and Western interpretation of Buddhism especially) point of view, fundamentalists who solely wish to exert power over others or maintain a sense of identity -- but that's another discussion. Could be interesting communicating with real aliens and hear their point of view on religion ... Btw. Donald mentioned the problem regarding translations from Greek, Hebrew, Sanskrit and other languages: Oooh, that's such a mess. One could write volumes on the mistakes made with Sanskrit, and whilst some Bible texts are actually translated from Greek, Egyptian -- not Greek -- is in many cases the main source to our knowledge about the old, Greek philosophy, dramas and myths. Many of the text we today refer to as 'Greek' were lost in days of yore -- we only know them because they were preserved in translation by Egyptian priests.

Einstein was quickly recognized by the academic world after his 1905 papers. He got a professor job. And as he continue to publish he got several promotions in terms of better academic jobs. And was offered many enrollments in top academic societies. So he didn't toil in obscurity or anything it was just the popular media made him a celebrity after 1920. Yes there's always some tension and argument over new ideas but because he published so prolifically there was little doubt that he was a great physicist and his ideas quickly gained more and more prominent in the academic world

I enjoy most of these conversations and theyre great for keeping abreast of current science/non fiction writing. Book cover design is too often an overlooked and undervalued skill & marketing tool,. So come on Michael a brief, thoughtful opinion is more interesting. GREAT BOOK COVER has started to sound a wee bit disingenuous to this sceptic.

You have been brainwashed by the evolutionism miseducation system (and so was I for most of my long life.) The Bible is always right, while scientists are frequently wrong; and evolution is always wrong. Evolution is not about science, but about God. The truth is, there is not one shred of verifiable evidence for common ancestry to be found on this planet. If you know of any verifiable evidence please let us know (just-so stories do not count.) 51:53 - if it was human over hunting, why didn't the native Americans hunt the buffalo into extinction? And how did a rather small number of nomadic people hunt to extinction all the *other* megafauna, including the ones that, in any other sense, would be hunting the small groups of nomads, like dire wolves & sabertooths? Also, why? It wasn't for food, as the nomads weren't numerous enough to need that much food. And a nomad can only wear so many dead animals at one time whilst nomading. And given all they had to kill them was sticks with sharpened stones tied to then, maybe arrows if they were real hi-tech nomads. How do you call yourself a skeptic as you buy into some of the most absurd notions ever proposed?

Dr. Prothero is a paleontologist, which means he is a scientist. As a scientist he is no doubt aware of how to employ the scientific method, especially with regard to making testable, falsifiable hypothetical predictions in order to find out if he is "wrong".

Patrick Dennis .....life would be so much more comfortable if we could trust all scientists and their "Scientific Method" but we can't. Science and all its adherents are not impartial seekers of truth. (some are) but most are making a living doing a job they have chosen (good for them). To invest Science with Truth is giving it more than it can cope with.
@BenTevikMusic
@BenTevikMusic 3 года назад
@@hazelford3358 I don’t think anyone claims that one should trust all scientists. The scientific method is the best way we have come up with to understand nature, mostly because proving theories wrong is built in to the method. These two are discussing the current scientific understanding of these topics. But no one is forcing you to believe them or not believe them. I’m curious if you know of a superior method of understanding the universe. No one claims science is perfect, but it is the best game in town.
@andybeans5790
@andybeans5790 3 года назад
@@hazelford3358 the whole point of science is to not trust things, including yourself. The scientific method is designed to remove subjectivity and instead use demonstrable, objective facts. Arbitrary "trust", or "blind faith", is what small children and religious folk do.
