In this sequel to Carl Sagan’s beloved classic and the companion to the hit television series hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the primary author of all the scripts for both this season and the previous season of Cosmos, Ann Druyan explores how science and civilization grew up together. From the emergence of life at deep-sea vents to solar-powered starships sailing through the galaxy, from the Big Bang to the intricacies of intelligence in many life forms, Druyan documents where humanity has been and where it is going, using her unique gift of bringing complex scientific concepts to life. With evocative photographs and vivid illustrations, she recounts momentous discoveries, from the Voyager missions in which she and her husband, Carl Sagan, participated to Cassini-Huygens’s recent insights into Saturn’s moons. This breathtaking sequel to Sagan’s masterpiece explains how we humans can glean a new understanding of consciousness here on Earth and out in the cosmos - again reminding us that our planet is a pale blue dot in an immense universe of possibility. Druyan and Shermer also discuss:
• how to write a script for a television series
• her 20 years with Carl Sagan and what their collaboration meant
• how she dealt with her grief after Carl’s death (and how any of us can deal with such pain)
• who the Voyager records were really for
• Breakthrough Starshot
• science and religion
• God and morality
• free will and determinism
• the hard problem of consciousness
• the Fermi Paradox (where is everybody?)
• women in science
• how we can eventually settle on other worlds, and
• how to reach the stars … and beyond.
Ann Druyan is a celebrated writer and producer who co-authored many bestsellers with her late husband, Carl Sagan. She also famously served as creative director of the Voyager Golden Record, sent into space 40 years ago. Druyan continues her work as an interpreter of the most important scientific discoveries, partnering with NASA and the Planetary Society. She has served as Secretary of the Federation of American Scientists and is a laureate of the International Humanist Academy. Most recently, she received both an Emmy and Peabody Award for her work in conceptualizing and writing National Geographic’s first season of Cosmos.
This dialogue was recorded on April 7, 2020 as part of the Science Salon Podcast series hosted by Michael Shermer and presented by The Skeptics Society, in California.

Thanks Michael and Anne. You inspired me to go back and start at the beginning with the original series of Cosmos which I’ve never seen. Watching Carl now. Thanks!

This is an absolutely wonderful book. Ann, like Carl, absolutely embodies what it means to be a human awake and alive in this amazing universe. A genuinely inspiring read and wonderful interview. Thank you!

Ann is always so wonderful. Again, I must add (as I have on a few videos already): being able--in light of our awareness as to how we are influenced by causal factors--to tweak how things unfold is NOT INCOMPATIBLE with everything being predetermined.

Beyond contribution to Science, their work as an educator ( Carl Sagan and family) has far reaching effect for our generation, and perhaps generations to come...Thank you.

I was fortunate enough to attend the first Beyond Belief conference in La Jolla in 2006, where almost everyone you've ever heard of was there, from Dawkins to Tyson and a roomful of others. At one break I had a rather long chat with Ms Druyan, mostly about the movie Contact which had recently come out, and a nicer person simply doesn't exist. I'd also known Mr Shermer from his appearances in San Diego and once again must remind him of how much I admire what he does, but still can't figure out how he finds the time!

@shirley ann I would require a great deal of evidence to take what you said seriously, because you sound like some airy-fairy newager who is into any bit of "spiritual" claptrap that comes along, and who is so delicate that the slightest criticism of what you believe in is felt as a personal attack!

Loved this conversation, thank you Mr. Shermer and Mrs. Druyan. That part about the quote from Demon Haunted World at around 52 minutes brought tears to my eyes. Miss Carl so much. She said it here also, we really need a Carl Sagan these days.
