This Mazzoni's opera had never been performed since it's creation. It was written, but the premiere at Lisbon was cancelled due to terrible earthquake, which destroyed almost the whole city. And only after 250 years it was finally staged. And it seems that all these years this opera has been waiting for the tenor of dream, who capable to sing such difficult peace. And here he is - incredible and almighty Michael Spyres. Bravo, Michael! This is exceptional!

Сейчас на альбоме она звучит вообще исключительно. Очень интересно, сколько в этом от композитора,а что создано исполнителем как барочное украшение.

You're in for a treat. I caught that production at Caramoor. Spyres tore the house down (he had to come out and take a bow after his mad scene).

I was a apprentice artist at Caramoor the year he sang Belshazzar. It was insane.

The final fermata is quite astonishing! I admire how Michael Spyres managed to perform it, although for most of contemporary listeners high-notes in falsetto have a weird effect. Thanks for posting this!

Great singer. The costume makes me think of the movie Moonstruck. "In time, Loretta you'll see this is for the best." "In time you'll drop dead and I'll come to your funeral in a red dress."

To respond to a commentator below: it was actually high G down to low G (bass range), hence the three octaves. From 5'35" to 5'42".

Not falsetto. This is actually a voix mixte. Were it falsetto he wouldn't be able to transition into the lower register. You would hear him crack into it as it wasn't a supported, and engaged tone.

AMAZING PERFORMANCE! BRAVO! do you have any more arias from this live opera please! I LOVE GALANTE-ERA REPERTOIRE! so sad it is sooooo rarely performed. I have Mazzoni's setting of Aminta, il Re Pastore; to my favorite librettist Metastasio!Mozart presented his take on it, and who can compete with that, so that is my favorite version, but sadly Mozart never did enough opere serie, as the genre style was slowly declining by then. I would have enjoyed his rendition of Antigono, even more so!

@obizin why don't you say it to the National Opera Theatre that never invested in such repertoire? They should be the ones entitled to do such work and they are given money for this. I am just gratefull to have gotten the chance for this two recitas after 250 years of silence and then got it back with such quality.

Dovino Sospiro... You say you have a copy of the score... would you be willing to share a copy of this aria with a fellow tenor? I had the opportunity to cover Michael a few years ago and his artistry is astounding, as is clear by this clip. I'd be extremely interesting in getting my hands and voice on this amazing aria. Please let me know. Best!

No no, of course not required by the score; In fact the passage is included in the "cadenza"; this Opera was written for some of the most powerfull castratos of the time, famous for being able to cover a huge tessitura range; for this reason, and because we had such an amazing talent like Michael Spyres with us, we decided to "abuse" a little bit on this side; A sort of "caricatura". But you need great quality and taklent also for bad taste and caricatura, some how...

Fulgurant !

He is a very fine tenor with a rare range; I still can't get excited about his voice. Too 'white' and unsupportedly breathy, but this is good rep for him. The acuto at 5:34 is falsetto crap, a note most tenors (myself also) can do in studio exercises, but decline to inflict on their public. (Pavarottti actually has an elegant and beautiful head-voice falsetto acuto in the Act 3 finale of his studio Puritani I can respect.)

If you hear him live he sounds actually way bigger and more powerful than many famous idols that only sounds woofy and incredibly dark in records...
@vuenastardez6485
@vuenastardez6485 5 лет назад
Are you kidding me? Do a High G with a darkness of him (actually it isn't dark of all) but he did it in mixed voice, it's so difficult for a tenor to do a high note like D5 or Eb5 with a little bit of darkness, now imagine a G5!.
@wordscapes5690

I have to agree with you here. The voice sounded very brittle in the da capo. Particularly toward the end. And that breathy screech was just so completely unnecessary. The ornamentation was MORE than enough of a wow factor. Knowing Mr Spyres as the consummate professional that he is, I am sure he would agree. Also, this is not a professional recording. Taking that into consideration, you can hear that he was not in perfect voice during this performance, particularly at 5:07, where the voice almost cracks twice.

Why would an educated composer even create such a difficult, impossible piece which is beyond a tenor's ability? Didn't Mazzoni think that he was writing impossible music?
@raffaelepianese9328
@raffaelepianese9328 2 года назад
Usually, especially during 1700, many roles in opera were dedicated or commissioned to particular singers with specific capabilities. For instance: Arturo in "I puritani" by Bellini, was a role exclusively made for Giovanni Battista Rubini, that's why in the finale (Credeasi misera) there's a high F! I think Mazzoni did the same thing, although there aren't a lot of information about him and the composition of this opera, nor we know the original cast of the first performance, considering it never happened.
