MICHAEL SPYRES singing Énée's aria "Inutils regrets" from Hector Berlioz's opera LES TROYENS. Recorded in April 2017 www.fischerartists.com/ www.michaelspyres.com/
This is impressive--unless you have heard Thill, Hepner, and best of all, Bryan Hymel. Check the latter out in both his Covent Garden and Metropolitan Opera performances. Hymel brings me to tears every time.
Beautiful singing, as always, from this lyric genius, but ... Aeneas? Yes it's just a concert presentation, but why did he accept this part, so far out of his fach and temperament? I've never seen/heard him force himself like this before, and hope never to again.
I agree. Michael has a gorgeous voice, but his pushing at the end is dangerous. Compare this with Bryan Hymel's performance at the Met in 2013 and you'll see what this music can and should sound like, and why only very few tenors can and should sing it.
