Phil Taylor had the greatest belief in himself. His nerve was rock solid. I’d be watching his games freaking out under the pressure of the intense moments. When he was winning he was ruthless and when he was behind he was angry but calm. The way he stacked his darts gave him an advantage over everyone which he was happy to take over and over again. No one could match his consistency long term without stacking the darts in the same way.
@@c64flash poor.? Rvb 5 time world champion, priestly, 2 time world champ, part ,3 time world champ, Lewis 2 time world champ, Anderson 2 time world champ. And so on, they are poor are they.?
It is ridiculous. Taylor was almost 60 when he retired from the PDC, so It had nothing to do with Taylor being scared of MvG. MvG was in the PDC for a few yesrs before Tsylor retired, and MvG seems to forget that Taylor still won 3 or 4 PDC world titles when both were in the same field. Tsylor was old and MvG was young.
@@dvidclapperton He didnt say anything about Taylor being scared. In the last few years of his career Taylor openly admitted to not training as much as he used to and I think that showed in some of his performances and he probably didnt want to do the amount of training required to keep up with people like MVG anymore and he probably didnt want to be a mid fielder so called it a day.
Personally i think taylor is the greatest player of all time his consistency was just unmatched he could just maintain levels only other players dreamed of. Van gerwen has the ability to take a game away in 15 minutes with bursts, but factor in the dedication of taylor to stay at the top for 30 years almost he was relentless in darts was his life in which van gerwen is now finding tough to maintain after 10/11 years at the top. They are both unbelievable player but taylors consistency and longevity should put at the top that's without mentioning 16 world titles and 16 matchplays the sheer desire to be and maintain being the best for so long is incredible
For sure. Just stacking those darts on top of each other in and around the treble 20 (and treble 19 here and there) all day long. They just keep announcing 100, 140 on a sub par day. He's had a few comebacks after he seemed like he was gone for a few months or so as well.
Taylor has a far superior head to head record to mvg despite the fact they're rivalry came at end of Taylors career, taylor won all matches at world championship and peak taylor of 09 to 11 had a higher average than mvg from 15 to 17. Not to mention that van gerwen is 13 world titles behind taylor
Yeah I want to see his birth certificate, it's like the Saudi Arabia team Scotland played in the under 16 World cup dudes all looked like Thirty years old
Crediting himself with being the reason Taylor retired is a bit rich. Taylor retired because he was getting older and his results were starting to slip. It would have happened at a similar time with or without Van Gerwen imo
MVG took Taylor's invincibility away. Yes, age also played a part but with prime MVG on the scene Taylor became human and with that vulnerable. Others suddenly realized they also stood a chance against him.
@@theliesisire7485 I think prime MVG played against Taylor at the tail end of his career. I really don’t think MVG had anything to do with his retirement.
@samclenaghan2008 agreed taylor had won more in 1 year than most dart players win in thier life. the disrespect he gets for liking to talk about himself is wild......hes achieved so much hes earned that right.
@@theliesisire7485 he made the worlds final his last year at the age of 52 I think, let’s see mvg do that! He struggles now, what’s he gonna look like in 20 Years for crying out loud 😂
You clearly heard what you wanted to hear. I interpreted this as him saying he rattled Phil in his early years, which he certainly did. He also goes on to the say Phil is the GOAT, took Michael 0.1 second to answer that one. There is no drama here
@@Matfridtyou need to re watch MVG says he is the best you doughnut. Are you deaf. I really like MVG but you can’t compare his achievements to Phil Taylor.
I've still got an early 2000's newspaper article somewhere explaining the methods to Phil Taylor's great success. This was to stack the darts vertically, one on top of the other, inside the centre of the treble twenty. All very neat and tidy, also printed with a matching diagram to illustrate how it's done!
Cannot believe these comments. I see it with all sports, the moment a Legend retires they were no good and the competition was poor. Taylor was literally the most dominant sports star ever. He was the standard. MVG also never met Taylor in his prime, luckily for MVG
fucking sports star HAHA give owa man, dominant darts player yea? id agree, dont be calling darts players sports man, the average weight of them is higher than their average scoring in kg WHAT THE FUCK lol
I think they're both incredible. I really can't choose between those 2. I'm pretty sure Phil and Michael would play for spot 1 and 2 if they started at the same age in this era.
Watching Phil Taylor growing up was incredible, it seemed like Barney was the only one who could ever get somewhat close to beating him but he truly dominated his era. I will always respect him for that. I can't help but think he did have some unnecessary arrogance in his personality though, having heard similar words from a few people now inc MVG & Wayne Mardle who both come across as decent blokes.
Personally I always found taylor to be very complimentary of other players while mvg seems very derogatory to other players, Taylor took every player seriously
@@MrSimonson Beat MVG 16-6 in that world matchplay. They talk about Taylor like he was some sort of relic that couldnt keep up. When he was still winning big ones right up until he decided to quit. Sure he wasnt as dominant, but he definately proved that the "new age players" werent better than him. MVGs ego is probably bigger than Taylors, if thats even possible.
Taylor was an utter bellend, but my word he was a special, special darts player. The greatest testament to his greatness is this - he only had a losing record in the PDC to one player. It was Rob Cross, who he played in his last ever game in the PDC, in the World Championship Final.
phil taylor 30 plus years of extremely high standard, not mentioning 16 world titles, and still playing the incredibly high standard into his 50's. MVG playing no where near his best now in his 30's. A bit like steve davis and stephen hendry in snooker played awesome upto their mid 30's then dropped off, but ronnie o' sullivan on the other hand still playing incredibly high standard coming upto 50 years old. Phil taylor and ronnie o'sullivan are the exceptions in their sports.
Ehhh despite mvg lost 16-6 to Phil in Matchplay in blackpool, and lost semis to rob cross at the worlds he might have been good. Just not in the tournaments that counts as the biggest 😂
Did he he say that though? He just said Talyor should have retired earlier and didn't handle losing too well and in the end this showed . And that's the truth simply.
@TheRockisaBondMovie Didn't say he is not the goat. I agree with the records, but like what MVG said, he should have retired before losing his edge, and I also think he had a nasty side when it came to sportsmanship to others . If he needed to do this out of motivation, who knows but wasn't a good look .
Taylor is the guvnor. 16 times world champ, 2 9 darters in one match. Going 2 years without losing a match, beating rvb, priestly, mvg, ect, no one will ever match his record, and the match against Lewis at the grand slam in 13 was the best match iv ever seen, 113 vs 110 long format crazy. Players can match that now but only in patches not through a long match. And dart boards are generous these days, the trebles are bigger hence why the higher averages.
Just checked, it’s down to the wire used on the board, the average board wire is 0.6mm and the tournament wire is 0.4 So the doubles and trebles are bigger
I love all the comments saying that Phil had no competition, unless you were there/saw a lot of it close up, you can’t appreciate rolling up at top competitions with fantastic professional players performing at high level only to have someone incredible completely outclass them , hence the decades of the ‘powers’ fear factor playing at unbelievable levels. MVG had that for about 4- 5 years but it is no more and will likely not be again because he just hasn’t sustained the levels, he himself achieved . In PT I watched an incredible performer for 20 + years winning everything, bringing crowds & pubs to standstill to watch his incredible feats, ruining people before the game had started ( I played, won Against and spoke to the world no 2 at the time on this and he was lost for an explanation as he worked just as hard). Don't forget what PT HAS achieved just because time has passed. PTPT would kick everyone’s butt just the same in this era if he was the same age. MVG seems bitter because he knows he cannot achieve the same if he had 10 lifetimes and cannot dominate against his hard working peers. Sometimes you just have to admit when someone truly great and superior at their chosen profession comes along.
not sustained his level is not true. after his fall in 2020 he continued to have the highest season average of all players. (exept 2023) his level BARELY sank. its just that all other players got better and better
If Phil was young coming through now at 17 having played for years before like mvg he be pushing averages over 120 regularly.Age fitness eyesight caught up with him last 5 years still one of the best when retirement at 58.
@@leedavies1475 fitness comes into every sports event even darts and snooker. a fit body helps keep the brain/mind sharper.an unfit body tires the mind
@leedavies1475 No, he means if you keep yourself fit like Luke Humphries you can play longer and better. Being overweight effects the knees when applying pressure on one leg when throwing. And drinking alcohol most nights effects the eye sight eventually.
@ChrisThornburn-ke5xk Poor? Do you watch darts? He won the Premier league- the US Darts Masters- Players Championship-Belgian Darts Open- and the world series finals. Why poor? Because he didn't win the worlds, For any other pro dart player this is an amazing year.
No doubt the players of today if they were in Taylors era he would not have won as many world championships, but that is true of all records. Players get better and so does the competition.
I really like MVG but he is not on the same level as Phil Taylor, just look at Phil’s record, no one has come anywhere near it. Just one example Phil Taylor achieved two 9 darters in one game that is insane.
the irony watching this now hearing him say "look how happy he was to beat me, I was only a kid" when this is exactly how he reacts to beating luke littler.😂😅
Prime MVG Vs Prime Taylor it's MVG all day. On a one off game Taylor couldn't live with MVGs game. Greatest yes but the best no. And then there's the fact he's a complete arsehole 😂
@@AlastairBarker so deluded taylor beat mvg far more times he was on the decline still beat mvg your weird post never seen taylor do what mvg does like hit 3 out of twenty doubles mvg this year taylor is only one to do 2 nine darters in same match taylor simpley the best
As a darts player there is no doubt Phil is the greatest for the longevity and success. Not just worlds but the number of Matchplays, Grand Prix and Open amongst everything else will never be rivalled. I get the argument he had the likes of manley, painter etc on toast and yes he would win no where near as much but he would still have won more than the rest including MVG if starting in the same era. He only started to wane in the later years and even then still made finals etc and won so it's unquestioned. MVG may have set a standard for 3 year but the power would have found a way and he may not have won as much either its not all one way.
They did say this in the full show but they had just come from a PDC event where they had all 11 champions and Phil just talked and talked about himself all night long. Wouldn't shut up. So I imagine that was fresh in their mind
I agree with mvg Taylor is the greatest mvg is maybe the best. One thing I've just thought is often in darts players will rise or drop to their opponent, for Phil to keep that level against 'blokes from the pub'was so impressive and to see him in the game now at his peak would be great to see and I think he would be on par with all the top4 on the game rn
@tonka869me Phil was better as well. Better peak years avg, better head to head. Just better, as the wires got thinner and he changed to small fat barrel during the unicorn years he was better than mvg has ever been. He is the reason avgs went up. They had to to stand a chance. Now littler has a chance to be the best he is already world class at 16. 17 year old mvg couldn't do this in the pdc. He was good but not like this in front of crowds, but we will see.
I think mvg is great but phil taylor is the best darts player ever and I think at that that champions night they shouldn't of let him take on that much, and for me if you a big darts fan you cant slate taylor 👍🏻
@Kevwebster135 100% Phil is the reason why alot of people actually loved watching the darts, I feel like darts is still good but its not as good as it was back then, there's not as many characters
What are you waffling. They never let Phil take on so much he just made it all about him cos he’s a tit of a man. Great player but a nobhead. Would never have won as much as he did in this era either.
Taylor’s success will never be eclipsed. He was a manufactured talent, so consistent and could demoralise opponents. When MVG really hit the scene in 2012 I knew he’d be the only player to rival Phil and their statistics are very close on the oche re scoring, averages, finishing etc - albeit Phil’s achievements are light years ahead of anyone including Mike. The way I see it is had they both been playing in their prime at the same time that they’d likely be participating against each other in the majority of finals. Because Phil could raise his game like a wounded animal and Mike does so similarly. When Phil avenged his loss to Barney 7-1 he was unplayable. Even Mike at his best might have struggled. Mike can win a set checking out in 10 - 11 darts with ease but then disappear. Where as Phil’s consistency of 12 darts finishes but every set were what players struggled to cope with. I guess we will never know. But Phil will always be the greatest player to grace the oche. And I guess it’s probably a good thing they both didn’t perform at their peaks at respective time because the other players might have struggled to dethrone either. Reason being is both Phil and Mike are fiercely competitive to the extent that they’d be looking to improve all the time merely in case they collide with one another! Massive respect to both of them and I love darts in general. Best of luck to both Luke’s tonight, should be absolutely epic!
@@ChrisThornburn-ke5xk I’ve nothing but admiration for the flying Scotsman. At his peak he was fluent and exciting. But this is more about Phil and MVG on basis. So I’m not sure where the word disrespect came from. When Anderson beat Taylor I’d actually be happy for him because when he has confidence he can compete with the best.
@@CoolMikey81 Phil is notorious for being a colossal prick. MvG is very blunt but by all accounts he’s a decent bloke. Taylor on the other hand was notorious for being a wanker. Just a reminder that the reason he doesn’t have an MBE is because he’s a sex offender. Brilliant darts player, horrible human being.
Phil is the best also. The quality of the boards and all related equipment has to be taken into account. But even without that, his tournament averages are .... ahem, phenomenal
Michael is one of the best ever but there is only one Phil 'the Powe'r Taylor. The greatest ever by far and I can't see anybody ever being that good again
i can't think of anyone who stayed at the top of his game in any sport for as long as phil did, and even at the end of his career when on the decline was still often heads above most others. MVG is my fav player atm, but he's still a long way to go to achieve what phil did.
“Fact is” proceeds to follow it up with a lot of garbage. The arrogance of your stupidity. Literally still has most of the highest averages and dominant winning records over every dart player for decades. I mean you surely know he got to the world final in his last year and won the second biggest tournament the Matchplay beating Wright, Price, MvG, Lewis & Barney?
Time will tell ! I played 3 weeks ago with a guy that Chris Dobey could never beat ? He said he would beat him now cos he's got on telly n has more experience and he is younger!! Before Dobey advanced, he could never beat him tho Taylor was the best since Bristow etc
@@StopLookingAtMyAccwatched darts for 32 years I hate Taylor as a person but he’s the best ever and better than mvg I rmeber there last game he beat mvg about 16-6 and van gerwen was right at his peak then Taylor was finished old eyesight gone the lot anybody who believes mvg or anybody on the circuit today is better than Taylor is deluded
@vincentmcbride6210 he'd probably be around the 3 that van Gerwin has. I'm not discounting the legacy. It was just a different Era. Everyone is better today across the board in every sport. Nobody was putting up 100 averages except Phil. Most of the guys were comparable to Fallon or Lisa Ashton. Now, guys put up 100 averages and lose.
Without Taylor darts doesn’t reach the level it has. Not in terms of skill and not in terms of number of tournaments or prize money. And nobody apart from MvG has came close to his level of play on a consistent basis.
@@mccann82agreed. Everyone had to step up to Taylor. The chase made everyone better, even if it wasn’t that generation, the next one had foundations built and so on. Taylor wouldn’t win as many now because everyone is better and tournaments can be be won and lost on the day. But he’d still be one of the most decorated champions because he’d also step up his game further against more competition
As a life long darts fan I have to accept Taylor is the best ever darts player. You have to judge these things at their respective time. I am a MVG fan and if you put MVG at his best vs Taylor at his best I don’t doubt MVG would win but you can’t compare like this. Many sports performances constantly improve for so many reasons which is why you can’t compare.
Massive Phil Taylor fan but he was a bit of prick but there is no doubt he is the best and greatest of all time. The power beat him every time at the worlds
As much as i hated Taylor as a person his record speaks for itself, and clearly it bothers MVG more than he bothered Taylor.Even at the end of his career Taylor was still better than him.Jealousy is a terrible trait Michael, people still feared taylor at the end but people look at you and think yeah I've got a chance and your only at half the career Taylor had.Thats the biggest problem with MVG he had no class or humility from the get go,give a man who made you all rich the credit he deserved.

Taylor is the GOAT, MVG will never beat Taylors record of 16 world titles. MVG says Taylor was getting a 'sore man' at the end, but MVG is always a sore loser because he thinks other players shouldn't beat him.
Taylor was so far ahead of the test during the 90’s…the competition was not very consistent though….the last 10 years the level has come up a lot so he would have won but not as much
