Michael York, star of films such as Cabaret, Logan's Run, and Austin Powers, spoke to the California stem cell agency governing board about his personal battle with amyloidosis, a rare, often fatal disease caused by the abnormal deposit of proteins called amyloids in various tissues of the body. In addition to amyloidosis, York was also diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. Last July, York had a successful blood stem cell transplant to treat his condition. Board member Sherry Lansing introduced Mr. York. To learn about the stem cell agency's funded projects related to blood cancers, visit our website: www.cirm.ca.gov/our-progress/l...

Michael York: "My Life Clock is no longer blinking" a reference to an iconic Sci Fi movie he made called Logan's Run where people's life span was limited but with Mr. York's successful blood stem cell transplant, harvested from his own body, his life expectancy in no longer counting down.......................... I actually became emotional when I saw this as I had not seen Mr. York since his appearance in the movie Austin Powers. I was saddened and stunned to have learned of his two illnesses and I did not recognize him until he spoke. Such a warm, gracious and wonderful man and actor I sincerely do wish him the best and hope that he will be with us for years to come. I'm glad that he is bringing awareness to these illnesses as I had never, ever heard mention of them before now. G-d Bless Mr. York

[3:47] "I'm happy to say that because of the work that you're all doing, my life clock is no longer blinking." That made me cry.

I often look on Wikipedia to see how my favorite actors are doing and when I saw Michael York I was shocked and immediately asked what kind of disease he had and then learned of his having Amyloidosis and how stem cell research has already helped him, thanks to RU-vid. Now I know something about it and also know that he is now not only a great actor that I boast about to the younger generations around me, he is also a hero and a man of vision and most of all a pioneer offering himself even up for research of a horrible debilitating death dealing disease so others may learn from his experience and obtain healing help. Michael you'll always be remembered not only for being one fantastic actor in film but also an outstanding caring human being of our 20th and 21st Centuries. I love you sir and wish you all the best and a continued long life. D'Arcy Pickering, Prince George, BC, Canada

Austin Powers 2 was just on Australian TV last night. Whilst watching and always been fond of Michael York, I thought I'd Google him to see was he's up to. I'm still shocked to see what's happened to him in such a short time and the effect the disease has had on him. He clearly appears to be a wonderful man and I sincerely hope he's doing well.

Thank you soooo much for stepping into the spotlight with Amyloidosis! Lost my 45 yr old husband to this disease just 7 wks after diagnosis. My hope is to bring more awareness to the disease so maybe other families don't suffer the loss our children & I have.

This is why I want to medical science to continue progressing. So that it can be used to help end harmful diseases and reverse the damage done to those that were afflicted.

So incredibly sad. I hadn't thought about Mr. York in a long time, and then while doing some reading up on Star Wars Celebration, I saw his name mentioned in connection with Rick McCallum of ILM (York is married to McCallum's mother), so I looked up what he's been up to as I hadn't seen him in a while. This is just shocking. I hope he continues to improve.

Sorry for his suffering, as I should know since I myself have multiple myeloma. But I just wish he was labeled as an advocate of multiple myeloma awareness as well as an advocate of amyloidosis awareness, which is often diagnosed in patients who already have multiple myeloma.

After seeing him in "Phantom of Death" where he plays a man suddenly struck with a rare ageing disease, this is all the more shocking.

Clinical trials are needed with IV Vit C. Animal studies were done years ago and showed promise with Vit C and Amyloidosis. Why weren't they continued in humans ?

82yr Grandmother Dx Sept 2012 at Mayo clinic Rochester. Primary systemic AL, w/ heart involvement. Dr Letendre told her straight away she'd die of a heart attack within 18 mos or less. She did 2 rounds of oral chemo until she couldn't do it anymore (side effects). Since then she's done IV high dose Vit C, and today her doctors say they can't tell she's ever had the disease. Light chain in low normal range. Heart looks and works great, and it appears the amyloids have dissolved from her organs. She also uses something called Salvestrol, from the UK. Simple plant phytonutrients that destroy the Beta cells in the bone marrow producing the Amyloids, leaving healthy cells unharmed. Mechanism uses CYP1B1 enzyme which are present on all malignant cells, including rogue Beta cells, but not present in healthy cells. Neat mechanism of Mother Nature.

OMG! Michael, I wish you all the best! Maybe a miracle will happen...maybe some drugs may refold those proteins. I know everything is more complex than it seems, still I hope some cure will come soon. Please stay healthy, we love you so much!

It's a good thing Michael York didn't rely on homeopathy for his ills, because homeopathy has nothing to offer serious illnesses (since it doesn't actually contain any active ingredients....). Best of luck to you, sir! JW3HH

Does this particular stem cell transplantation use embryonic or adult stem cells?
@CIRMTV
@CIRMTV 8 лет назад
Hello, this particular treatment used adult stem cells
@republimom
@republimom 8 лет назад
Thank you kindly for your prompt reply. I am gratified to learn that adult stem cell therapy made Mr. York's treatment possible. It has been shown that embryonic stem cells have nowhere near the number of treatments as well as actual cures as adult stem cell therapy. Another benefit of adult stem cell therapy is that it is not overshadowed by the controversy that surrounds embryonic stem cell harvesting.
