As a man with 5 kids and 7 grand kids, I can tell you that you usually don't notice noise the kids are making. You notice silence immediately, because that's usually when they're doing something they're not supposed to be doing. But noise? Nope. It's much like how folks who live near airports or railroad tracks become so accustomed to it, they don't even notice it.
@JakkiPi

Yes silence is terrifying. Checking to see if they're breathing when they're sleeping is another one. Someone gave us colored bath dyes. Noticed it was quiet and walked in to check... to find a child laying in an inch of red bath water. That'll give you a heart attack! She was just relaxing. I threw out the bath dyes, angry that someone thought it was a great gift.

Silence is alarming. Followed b your kids calmly sitting together in their room when you come in, smiling at you and behave all nice and innocent. You know immediately something is wrong

As a person with 3 kids and my wife having 4 of her own, I can assure you if the house went quiet it was down to 3 reasons, A) they all left, B) they’re all asleep, or C) one of them broke something or someone (in which case the crying started)… 😂 Thank god for human development. 😂

In the house I grew up in, My parents had a grandfather clock that would chime ever 30 minutes and count out the hours with a bong sound for each hour passed. I remember friends spending the night and waking me up asking how the hell I could sleep with that thing going off all the time, I didn't hear a sound. For the most part I forgot it was around, Unless I was looking at it for what time it was. Now, Some 20+ years later, I can still hear it in my head if I think about it. Crazy how the brain works!

"It takes a village to raise a child" is one of those things you don't really appreciate until you're a parent. As a new-ish dad I have yet to endure all of the struggles outlined, only a few. The nights my parents can babysit to let us go on date night, the daycare looking after her while we work, the extended family keeping their attention while we host a family function. I'm quite certain being a good parent is knowing you can't do it all yourself and trusting you've got good people to help share the load in a way that empowers your friends and family (I.e. you being the cool aunt for example). For recommending good comedy I would suggest the Canadian treasure Norm MacDonald. Specifically his Moth Joke or 12 Minute Joke are great introductions to his cleverness.

I don't have children either, and at this point wouldn't want any if it meant starting from scratch. I've also had nightmare thoughts about pets, particularly cats using my speaker grilles for scratch posts. If I were to meet someone special enough to marry and she had a child already, I'd want him/her to be old enough to have a conversation with. If I met someone who had a pet, I'd have to think about it. I have grand nieces, and when I go to my sister's for Christmas I see them. I note as they've gotten older, they're easier to take. I can have conversations with 2 of them now. The third one needs more seasoning😄. As for comedy recommendations, I discovered Mitch Hedberg recently. Of the several videos I've seen, I think I like "I Wish they Made Fajita Cologne" the best. He's no longer with us; the official cause of death was a drug OD, I think. He started using them to combat his extreme stage fright.

Being a parent changes you. Sometimes not in good ways. Wife was driving once when while stopped at a red light, a group of kids (teens) came up to the car hooting and hollering. This was when you first started hearing about flash mobs robbing people. As we'd just moved from the sleepy midwest to big scary southern California, I've got one hand on the door handle and the other in a cocked fist ready to throw down and holler at them to back the F__ off or I'll bust their skulls open. (I'm not a fighter....my last "fight" was in 4th grade and I didn't even throw a punch, just held the kid away with my long arms). As the light turns green and my wife pulls away, the kids are in the back with their mouths hanging open in disbelief staring at me when my wife says... "You realize that was a church group fundraising right?" Ok...so perhaps I'm a little too over protective. Ooops.

The part where he talks about kids being ready for school or being dressed up when it’s not needed (early in the night or weekends)… yeah… my son (4) wants to sleep out during weekdays, but in the weekend…. 6-6:30am… he walks down and is awake… same goes for my daughter (10). Weekdays no-go, weekends, 7am and she’s all done and ready for the day… I recognize a lot 😂

As a full time single Dad I can give this opinion from experience. If you are having as much of a struggle as he is demonstrating then you are F'ing up as a parent. My daughter is 20 and my son just turned 18 and is graduating highschool in June so I have seen it all and never dealt with some of what he described. I can tell you this, raising children, at some point, will give you the biggest scare you have ever felt, but also the greatest joy you have ever felt. Yet I don't recognize most of what he is saying (or acting out).

It felt like a very "well crafted" story. I remember specifically thinking that when listening to it. I enjoyed the characters and places and especially the stories within the story. I found the subject matter of the religious cult and leader to be very interesting. There certainly seems to be (or have been) things between religious leaders in the west and kids, and I'm not sure I really understand his take on it exactly. Balance, yes, but still I am confused about the meaning. I'm comfortable with the view that those religious leaders are malicious frauds. I'm happy those two found each other in the end, even if they maybe shouldn't have. The bit towards the end with all the characters narrowly missing each other while looking for each other, was great. I'm a bit sad Chekhov's gun handling instructions were not followed, and am not sure what to make of the immaculate conception. On the whole, I enjoyed it quite a bit. There's a lot of melancholy, but also hope, and even better hope paid off, and that's a flavor of art I enjoy quite a lot. Thanks for the recommendation
@NoProtocol
@NoProtocol Год назад
I remember finishing that book with a lot of loose ends in my mind. Towards the middle I found it meandering in the moment but once I was nearing the end I thought “ah ok, that was well crafted” (as you say). My only qualm was how quickly it was wrapped up, it was a very long book for it to be concluded so quickly (although that is personal preference). I’m glad you ended up reading it! After being gifted that book I got really into his short stories & novels. I hope you recommend it to someone else some day (:
@ArtistJoshuaWeigand
@ArtistJoshuaWeigand Год назад
I did think the ending felt a bit abrupt, and I totally agree with your observation about the meandering, but I do tend to like some amount of meandering after some groundwork in either character or plot is laid down. Too much meandering can feel like a videogame where the point is just to grind, and I'm not into that type of thing. I'm more interested in exploring a world, so taking some time to look around after some structure has been established can be fun. I probably will recommend it. I hope you enjoy the weekend.

Being human is not always an easy thing. The family unit has been in decline since the 1960's, frankly, having children is a commitment to the future of the human race. if we get a population collapse, there will be difficult times, as we have always been a growing species. Looking a Japan buying more adult diapers than baby diapers are a signpost of a shrinking population.

50% will like what I am going to say the other 50% I could care less. When I was raised and how I raised my kids. You go out to dinner you best be on your good behaver or you are not going out with the family. You can sit in the car or you will just not go. If that failed a good chat in the men's room or outside in the car has the same effect. Of course your booty is sore but oh well. You best act right or that privilege is taken away. I had only needed to use the Restroom/Car visit one time and three times with the you want to act up. You get the car. After that never had an issue.
