Michel Legrand - Theme from "Summer of '42"

Michel Legrand composed the soundtrack for the 1971 coming-of-age movie "The Summer of '42," including its poignant main theme, "The Summer Knows." From what I understand, the LP marketed as the time as the film's soundtrack actually had only two tracks from the film: the main theme and the end titles track. The remainder of the material on the LP - now as a pricey out-of-print CD - came from the score Legrand composed for the 1969 film, "Picasso Summer." Anyway, here's the main theme from "The Summer of '42."

My mother sat me down to watch this at an informative age, the score has haunted my life like a welcome friend- I loved reading your comment- she obviously adored my father and love itself - walk tall and know even more music is waiting in the beyond - love is a ripple of the total - keep listening, in the 'end' it all makes sense x

Saw this movie when I was 15 with a bunch of my buddies. We were mesmerized. Could something like this really happen - Every young boy’s dream. We all could talk the talk, pound our chests, act like studs and every older girl’s desire….. and that was as close as any of us ever came to such a boy’s dream….we walked home, opened our books and did our homework for the next week’s assignments. But the movie and the music never left me.

I was in 11th grade, and I went with my parents to see this movie during the summer of 1971. We’re only 3 years apart. Funny how 3 years can make a difference. I bought this LP and played it repeatedly on my parent’s record player before school in the morning. Seems like you and I had similar experiences. Today, I still enjoy this music, but it’s no longer “captivating.” One changes a lot after 50 years, even though the music stays the same.

Like Spideraxis, I've seen this movie 40 years ago, now I'm 54! Where all these years are gone? And everyday, I ask me for why so many people prefer "hurt" the others?.. It's so easy to give LOVE (in the most wide sense of the word, a smile to somebody who seems sad is also LOVE!!!). And at the end of the way, there's the only thing who will matter. LOVE given and received, nothing else!
@imirj
@imirj 5 лет назад
You're certainly right, in the end there's only LOVE. Someone has already written, a long time ago I must say, his name was Paul ( the saint ). It was something like this: throughout our lives, we strive for FAITH, HOPE and LOVE, but the first two pass away, in the end LOVE remains. LOVE as you wisely pointed. is much more than we can actually fathom.

My favorite movie theme. I could easily identify because when I saw the film, I was in my teens, one year older than central character Hermie. That was 43 years ago. Forty-three years have come and gone, and no movie or theme ever affected me so poignantly. Today this song still brings me to tears.

you guys and gals, should read the book, it is Hilarious, from chapter 8 on OMG, laugh out load funny. FYI, Hermie was a real character, and this was his Bio, all the things said and done were all real. He said the book started out as a Tribute to his mother and his Best Friend, Oscy, aka Oscar, who was killed during the Korean war as a Medic on Hermie's 24th Birthday, after that he never celebrated his birthday again. The book and movie evolved from a Tribute to Oscar and their friendship to a love story and coming of age. Hermie originally sold the screenplay as a screenplay, then after they filmed the movie, the producers asked him if he could write a book. Hermie finished the book in 2 weeks, and the book became an instant best seller. Also, the producers of the movie weren't sure if it would be a hit, and offered Hermie a percentage instead of a salary. Hermie accepted and the movie became the Sleeper hit of 1973. He said the movie and book made him so much money he never had to work again just from the residuals. Jennifer O'Neil when she acted in this film this was the exact age of Dorothy character was in real life when Hermie met her. Dorothy was a 20-21 newlywed bride. Jennifer O'Neil bought the rights to the book, in hopes of making a sequel but obviously that never happened as Mrs. O'Neil is in her Seventies now. When the movie came out in 1973, about 12 women wrote to Hermie claiming to be Dorothy. One of them was the real Dorothy, Hermie could tell because of the hand writing and the contents of the letter. This was in 1973, and the movie took place in 1942, so the real Dorothy who was then 20, would have been in her 50's. The letter suggested they let things lie, because Dorothy remarried and was happy and was a Grandmother. So neither of them revisited the past. The whole movie was real, the only thing made up was the Packet Island, which was supposed to be Nantucket Island off of Massachusetts. But the movie was filmed in California up North of San Francisco, off of Mendocino. It's funny because it was filmed on the west coast they had to film the sunset as a sunrise where Dorothy says to Hermie as she's finishing writing her letter to her husband. What a beautiful morning!, was actually a sunset. LOL

ESTA MELODÍA ORIGINAL DE LA PELÍCULA "VERANO DEL 42", FUE ESCRITA POR MICHEL LEGRAND Y GRABADA POR ÉL MISMO EN FRENTE DE SU ORQUESTA, EN UNA DELICIOSA COMBINACIÓN DE LAS CUERDAS Y DE LOS VIENTOS CON ALGUNOS PASAJES DE OTROS INSTRUMENTOS; ES UNA VERDADERA SERENATA DE AMOR QUE TOCA LAS FIBRAS MÁS SENSIBLES DE LOS CORAZONES ENAMORADOS. YO NO PUEDO IMAGINAR SIQUIERA QUE ALGUIEN, DESPUÉS DE ESCUCHAR ESTA SUBLIME MELODÍA, NO SIENTA DENTRO DE SÍ UN CIERTO ESCALOFRÍO DE MELANCOLÍA Y HASTA DE TRISTEZA, PORQUE SUS PASAJES, CON CIERTOS TOQUES AISLADOS Y DELICADOS, ENTRETEJIDOS TODOS EN TONOS MAYORES Y MENORES, PRODUCEN UNA MEZCLA CASI IDÍLICA QUE CASI HIPNOTIZA Y DEJA COMO UNA CIERTA AURA DE SUSPENSO QUE, AÚN DESPUÉS DE FINALIZADA TODA LA EJECUCIÓN, EN EL ÚLTIMO COMPÁS QUEDA UNA SENSACIÓN DE PAZ Y DE TRISTEZA A LA VEZ, UNA TIERNA MELODÍA QUE DE POR SÍ ES UNA HERMOSA PIEZA DE COLECCIÓN QUE MERECE FIGURAR EN CUALQUIER DISCOTECA.

Actually heard this on radio 3 in Feb. immediately hits the spot it's 'so' romantic even fell in love with the gold fish. Conveys that old filling so well a distant yearning or even lost love, I think Michel got the musical idea from Rachmaninoff's second symphony, there is a striking similarity here. It's a real ear wormer, always got it going in my computer.

Saw this when I was 14, and it has been a favorite ever since. I moved to the Mendocino coast when I was 19, and only then found out that the movie was filmed there, and not on Nantucket. Dorothy's house was built for the film and then removed, but you can still find Hermie's house on Ukiah St. in Mendocino.

Yeah, I was in 9th grade. I thought "what a lucky kid", to get with Jennifer. Don't think this movie could be made these days, as it would not be politically correct. Remember Jennifer well, what a Goddess that came down to earth!

Dorothy wasn't that much older, Dorothy was only 21-22 which was the Exact age of Jennifer O'Neill when she got the part and acted in this movie. The books is great also. Very funny and heart warming book, the ending will make you cry. It's a Hilarious book especially from chapter 8 on. I've read and re-read the book 4 times over the years. I just get nostalgic and dust it off and re-read it. I've moved and lost the book so I just re-order it. Just some facts. Herman Raucher (the author) wrote this originally as a Screenplay, and SOLD the screen play to a studio. And the Studio decided to make the movie. Originally, they wanted an 'older woman' to play the part as in 30+ years old. Then Jennifer O'Neill auditioned and got the part. But she had reservations about the 'Nudity' because Jenn, didn't want to do nudity. She was assured that the 'scene' would be done 'tastefully and with style' and to "not" show nudity in any erotic or vulgar way. Hence that last bedroom scene, we never "actually" see them 'making love' it's just left to the viewers imagination. This screenplay was "actually the author Herman Raucher's Biography" these events all really happened to him in the summer of 42. There was a "Dorothy". There was a "real" Benji, Oscy. The screen play was originally about Hermie's and Oscy's friendship and a dedication to Oscy (Oscar Seltzer) and his (Hermie's) Mother who had passed by 1971 when the movie was made, but evolved into a story about Hermie and Dorothy. Oscy would later be in the Army and was killed during the Korean war as a Medic while he was tending to another wounded soldier. That death was on Oscy's 24 birthday. Thus the screenplay was originally a dedication to Oscy. But Hermie also had "survivor's guilt". Which is evidence by Hermies other book about a returning soldier with PTSD who moves into a Haunted house and the spirits mess with him. I think the spirits messed with Hermie who had survivors guilt. Hermie also did another book called "Sweet November", and they made a movie with a more modern re-make with Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron. After the movie came out Herman the author received 6 letters from fans who claimed to be Dorothy. One of those 6 was the real Dorothy, Herman knew because he recognized the "handwriting" and that Dorothy knew details that only the Real Dorothy could know. But Dorothy closed the fan letter by saying, "it's best they not re-visit the past". aka not meetup again. And they let it lie because the real Dorothy had remarried and was now a grandmother in 1973 when the movie came out; Dorothy would have been 52 years old (1942 (when Dorothy was 22 + 30 years = . 52 years old in 1973)) After the filming of the movie, the producers weren't sure if the movie would be a success, and they asked Herman to make the screenplay into a book and write a book based on the screenplay. Herman agreed and finished the book in 2-weeks. The Book "Summer of 42" was an Instant National Bestseller. Hence the movie Trailer and advertising posters said, "Based on the National Bestseller Summer of 42". The movie itself was an Instant hit also becoming that years (1971) sleeper hit raking in $43 million. In today's adjusted that would be $240 million. The movie was made for a paltry $1 million budget and was actually filmed up in Mendocino, CA up northern CA between Eureka (near Oregon border) and San Francisco even though it was based on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts where Herman use to spend his summers. Packett Island (where the book and movie mention) was a made-up location, it doesn't exist. Because the producers weren't sure if the movie would be a hit they didn't pay Herman but offered him 10% of earnings which was a windfall for Herman because he says between the movie and book proceeds and residuals it continues to pay his bills very well to today. The book has gone into 4 re-prints because the book sold out. You can get the book on Amazon for $2 plus shipping. Jennifer O'Neill for her part the movie 'made' her and she 'made the movie'. Her sensitive portrayal of Dorothy was amazing. And she was in high demand after this movie both as a model and actress. Jennifer led a storied life with 8 marriages. She almost died 3 times. Overdose attempt at age of 15 from heartsick because her parents wouldn't let her keep her pet dog and cat. Then she's an Equestrian and during a jump with a horse, the horse fell on her and broke her neck/back in 3 places. Then a gun accidentally discharged and nearly killed her. For 30 years she was Cover Girl for their line of cosmetics. And led a storied life. Jenn later bought the rights to Summer of 42' and wanted to make a Sequel but nothing became of it. Jennifer is actually Brazilian born in Brazil then her parents moved to Connecticut when she was young and then to NY. Born to a British mother and American Father. There are 3 things that made this movie. 1. The wonderful screenplay. Those words were actually said and done because it was Herman Raucher (Hermie's) Biography. That summer of 42' happened to him. 2. Jennifer O'Neill made the movie, her sensitive portrayal of Dorothy was amazing. You could see the bags under her eyes in the bedroom scene where she was actually crying. 3. The Haunting Music score by French composer Michel Legrand. For which they won the Oscar for best Original Score in 1972. Academy Awards, USA 1972 Won Oscar Best Music, Original Dramatic Score Michel Legrand Nominated Oscar Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced Herman Raucher Best Cinematography Robert Surtees Best Film Editing Folmar Blangsted
