Was Drucker a BS vendor? In his book The Practice of Management, Peter Drucker declares there is only one purpose of a business: to create a customer. Therefore, his client, General Motors, followes his advice. They ran General Motors into bankruptcy while maintaining customers. Is he brilliant or what?
To me, “maintaining” is not “creating”…big difference. Drucker stated “Because the purpose of a business is to CREATE a customer, the business enterprise has two-and only two-basic functions:marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results:all the rest are costs.” I’m thinking GM’s lack of innovation was their real demise
What was the date this interview took place? What are two or three events over the next few years that would help me understand the impact of this interview on government.? I guess this is about 1/2 way through the Clinton administration. Thanks for posting the interview. From my 2016 time I find it fascinating to listen very very closely for what was Mr. Drucker's train of thought. How was he organizing his ideas? Thanks for being a very listening interviewer and giving Mr. Drucker lots of room to speak as complete thoughts as he felt necessary.
Lee, you are correct, this interview took place in 1994. Peter was so generous, he freely served as my handholder throughout the time I served in President Clinton ' s administration. There were some powerful, positive success stories from the reinventing government initiative, NASA, the FDA, US Customs Service, the IRS to name a few.
