@@peterwill3699 on acceleration yes, between shifts no. All the good running ones roll a little coal on take off because they’re getting plenty of fuel.
It's nice seeing this part of my state, first time with you since you normally would go back around Lake Michigan to get home. It'll be interesting seeing "Orwell" taking the Mackinaw Bridge and hitting the UP. 👍🏻
Dot are at times very helpful, I was driving an older truck and at a DOT check they found a Crack in the frame. Yes they put me out of service but for the price I could have paid. It was a deal.
I'll tell you what happened that caused the road block. A couple got into an argument on 31 about a mile south of where you re-entered 31. The woman exited the vehicle, and her drunk husband in a fit of rage ran her over with the car killing her. I live in Free Soil. Hope you enjoyed touring my quaint little town.
Orwell's looks like he's doing great! We just bought a pair of identical 1984 IH 9670 110 big bunks with low miles (498 and 515k) from a heavy haul outfit in California. 3406 motors, 15 spds with 15k tags on 227" WB all on air, twin 100G tanks and sliding 5th wheels. They been off the road since '05 and started right up, put them on the trailer and hauled them back East after giving the owner 22k for both of them. I saw a ton of clean iron when I was there and CHEAP! California's a gold mine for old trucks, nobody wants them for some reason, lol. My nephew calls them Alex and Eddie, the Van Halen boys.
@@steverzepecki500 For commerce yes, for private ownership no. I was at the ATHS show in Perris Last year and old trucks are still being driven all over California. The So-Cal chapter of the ATHS website has a forum on legalities for owning and operating old diesel trucks.
It's not that nobody wants them, it's that California has strict laws over aging trucks, hell, a 4 year old truck may not pass inspection for the smog rules out there.
@@wetspotswimwear1199 As I said, the old trucks in California are fine for private owners and collectors. It's the fact that they can't be used for commerce that makes them so plentiful for sale. At 6-7 bucks a gallon, not many people are using them for pleasure cruisers like they once were. We here on the East coast are reaping the benefits in spades. I have two Landoll's going out West almost every three weeks now with prices the way they are. Back here the price is near triple for rust free older iron.
Great video Steve really enjoy all the different camera angles and your commentary. Evidently you passed the minor check list for the Dot in the rest area. Very beautiful scenery on your trip around the Detour to your load. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Steve.
I like your thoughts on Michigan. I live in Charlotte NC, but from Michigan. I still have 3 air b&bs in the Baldwin and silver lake area and your correct it’s awesome off roading and camping. We keep our Jeep at one of the cabins and come up a lot due to all our family being up here. Be happy and drive safe.
Hi Steve I was thinking last video those chain binders look like it’s time for oil on them thanks for the ride your and Orwell stay safe see you on the next run 😊
Wow, the average person has no idea or appreciation of what is involved to move a piece of heavy machinery from point A to point B. Tremendous respect for you good truck drivers out there that do this well. Carry On Sir.
Hello Steve I enjoy your videos your a very hard working man. I hope life gives back more then you put in You deserve it hope your family enjoyed the vacation in the west .
Lots of times the cursory look at simple things like lights, tires and overall appearance says a LOT about the condition of the truck.... generally of the driver is taking care of the small things, they'll be taking care of the bigger things too. For me, just having things noted on my PTI has had me skate on more in depth inspections...
I was in a rest area and the DOT had pulled in while I was on my sleep period. They knocked on my door and demanded my paperwork. I ignored them as when you are sleeping, you are NOT on duty. After about 5 mins, I opened the sleeper door and told them to knock the shit off as i had 7 hours left of my sleep period and they just made me reset it. I called my company to let them know and they sent a qualcomm message to all drivers about what was goin on and to let them know of any other states doing the same thing. I have also been pulled in and told to NOT update my logbook at scales, I ignore them as well as the officers CANNOT override the rules for their own gain. I also ran a loose leaf logbook, so I can take out the days not required so the officers cannot find any possible violations.
My sister and brother in law own a shop in prairie du chien WI and the belong to a side by side club i was up there for two months and they go every were and really enjoy it.
In alabama you can put a license plate on side by sides and run them everywhere. Only restrictions are on 4wheelers. Can’t run them on the road. But side by sides you can if you lic them. Plus there is a ton of trails and hunting roads you can run
20 of us get together every year and theres an older couple that we pay to camp in their yard. They live across from 100's of miles of riding trails. I bring my cr 500 2 stroke and they don't make those anymore and everyone else takes their 4 wheelers and razers and we get our or stickers and we ride for a week. Its a blast to be able to do that.
If pulling in to a rest area and dot is there .. legally park go to off duty. They can't force you to change duty status. I did this in Ohio. Pissed the officers off to no end. "Talk to me when my break is over" And, your under no legal obligation to assist in their investigation. Logbook, bills, DL then feet on dash.
I've been violated, feel free to ask me details. If you have any civil and common law lawyers in mind, feel free to give me those details. I want Justice real Justice and I want compensation for rights person property violations by out of. Order authorities😮😢😡
I was up in upstate newyork 2 wks ago and the rest areas were full of dot and state troopers they were looking at trucks i counted 10 of them in 1 small rest area then i stopped un another rest area to use the bathroom and it was full too
I know a lot of the older divers were taught strapping like you did but it is dangerous. If some idiot bumps your trailer they will cut the straps and you now have an unsecured load. If it falls to the road dot will write several tickets. I try to teach safety, in strapping never have exposed straps, though it's hard in a double drop.
I have been subscribed for about a year and a half or 2 and haven’t seen you make it to Michigan yet so welcome to my state hopefully they treat you right good luck drive safe and I hope to see you driving down the sometime
It is a federal charge to interrupt your 10 off. Look, it up, make a citizen's arrest of out of order authorities and Sue them not just in civil, but in common law as an individual. Then they'll pay the f****** attention.
Hey Steve, this video brought up a question. If you had an oversized load on this trip and that first responder detour, had you going out of your permitted route, would you have to call and get a new permit or be allowed the way around without it? I'm asking because I've never done oversized loads.
DO not deviate from approved route without permission, period. For the amount of time it would take for the bureaucracy to grind thru all that (and possibly still screw it up) you'd almost be better off pulling off to the side and waiting for EMS to clear their scene; if it affects the delivery schedule, so be it, but let dispatch and/or client know! Out of your control. If its a major scene, a structure fire, then yeah, try to get a reroute approved.
Yup, I thought he was going to get torched for sure... MSP is usually foaming at the mouth to pick over an older truck and take a little coin home to Big Gretch.
Wish you could rest in a rest area, but most don't allow it. Year's ago, in Texas, I stopped at a rest area, for bathroom use, came out to find d o t standing by my company truck. Luckily, the computer logs were still too new in the industry, and they didn't have the knowledge, yet.
Its amazing how a 40 year old truck does the same job as a new truck..The 3406b was a good engine...had many of them...Will these new trucks last as long?
Trucks fundamentally havent changed. They just added more plastic and added some aftertreatment. There the same engine blocks with a new name. Brakes frames axles seats hardly anything has actually changed from the 80’s. Todays trucks are going to be a PITA to fix in 40 years when the circuit boards are old or the digital dash goes out. By then im sure guys might just delete all that stuff and throw in a mechanical motor
@@mikeking7038 ya....in the 90ies I overhauled 3406b for under 3500 dollars of parts not including my labor....I have been told that many engines now can be 49 to 60 thousand depending on type of failure....Sure takes the fun out of trucking....Owner operator and small fleets are an endangered species right now..Last comi I worked for refused my demand to do machine work on an old 3406 b engine block and I wouldn't rebuild it if they didn't do it....Boss took it to the Cat dealer.and the bill was over 40 thousand with a new block.. Everything now is dealer orientated... independent shops can't get tech support or warranty assistance...They also raised the parts prices on the old stuff sky high.... Aftermarkey parts are a mixed bag....some good some bad...take your chances
Rolls of paper can be a hazardous load, my uncle had a load of rolls of paper shift while exiting a highway and it rolled his rig back down the embankment to the highway. Wrote off his rig, damaged his heart badly enough his license got pulled on medical grounds.
Yep playing catchup watching these. The U.P. of Michigan is beautiful year round. We love are 4 wheeler and snowmobile trails. I dont like the side by side they are too much like cars and our trails can break them.
The thing about going off route on an unknown route is just that you don’t know what’s on that route. There may be bridges that you’re not allowed to cross because of weight or could be a low bridge because you’re over height.I agree with the other commenter about pulling over and waiting.I speak from experience DOT will fine you for being off route.
I'm thinking hard of where to move as well. There's been so much movement in the US these last three to four years where people are fleeing certain states for obvious reasons to another state. I've seen so much construction in once what would be considered rural less populated areas and it just destroyed that small town America laid back feel of that area. Where there was once less traffic quietness and a stillness many of us can appreciate now changed to noise more traffic and new residents with pissy attitudes very different from the chill welcoming polite mannerisms of said area. It's been a chore finding somewhere I can plant roots and settle down.
Too Bad the Ludington MI to Manitowoc WI Ferry is closed for the year, that would have been a short easy way back home ... Did you take the scenic ride through the U.P. or back south through Chicago?
"DOT in the rest area". At first, I was WTF? Then I figured since they're gonna be out there anyway, its likely safer than a roadside. Years ago, SCDOT had a short off/on station on I-85S just south of US29 in Spartanburg. That installation was a killer. The so-called "off ramp" lane was only long enough for 5-6 rigs before truckers had to stop in the right lane of the 2-lane interstate. Back before flashing signs and notices for truckers, it was just a metal road sign that said Weigh Station All Trucks Next Right. The sweeping right hander leading up to stopped trucks in the right lane killed a lot of motorists before SC got wise and closed it for good.
That PCA is Packaging Corp of America, so yes papermill that makes cardboard & boxes. There used to be a cardboard factory of theirs here in Buffalo too, but I think it may have closed up a while back. Iirc i worked at their plant here as a temp for a short time in my younger years(25 yrs ago). I'm pretty sure they have factory locations spread through out the US to supply boxes to every company that uses boxes = alot! 🤔👍👌🛠️🔧🔩🗜️📏😄
WV is the place you ot to be for off road look up big Agnes and Hatfield and McCoy trail . Any dirt road or road with no painted lines you can ride on very little regs
