As long as the keys arent in it, and nothing for him to get into or steal not the end of the world if he’s just checking it out, but still not cool. I’d definitely lock the doors any possible when hauling that stuff personally and keep the keys with me in my truck because I don’t trust people.

The siren control boxes are worth at least $100 on the used market and with this being a 1 year old engine it more than likely has a far more valuable modern control box in it. They're only held in with a couple of screws and take less than a minute to remove. Not the kind of stuff you want some stranger snooping around.
@robertgardner4508
@robertgardner4508 Год назад
@@armchairgeneralissimo Yeah, even if the company can cover it with insurance, or whatever. As a truck driver myself, I know I am responsible for the freight I haul, and people snooping around doing that stuff, even if they just want to check it out because they're ex firefighter, you never know a persons intentions, or what could get you into preventables and such.

I wasn't given keys to it so I had no way to lock and get back in. This was the first time (that I know) this ever happened. And to have it happen on camera was quite a surprise.

Still you don't go to some random truck and just help your self. It doesn't matter if that individual says he used to be a firefighter himself. It still isn't right to snoop around things that don't concern him.

Hi Steve, I’m an old school retired fire fighter. It’s great that you mentioned American La France. When their only business was fire apparatus they were manufactured in a plant in Elmira NY. They were considered the best. Any fire fighter in the day was proud to work with a La France unit. Unfortunately corporate mergers and takeovers ruined that reputation. They went out of business in 2013 if I remember correctly.
@robertborchert932
@robertborchert932 Год назад
Here too, in the early days, we trained on the tailboard. The American LaFrance is legendary, beautiful apparatus. Really miss the music of the Crown Firecoaches, those Detroits are sweet.

@@thomasfreeman7770 truth, I earned my ticket in Fire Science at Rancho Santiago College, now named back to Santa Ans College. Little tidbit, as a firefighter you might understand. We had a day when you had to do something crazy, close to graduation. I was in the 93rd Basic Fire Academy, nine months. There was an expedited academy, shorter, but I was among the Old Dudes. Men with businesses and families. In this event, I did several laps, as I was dinged for not doing the same. "Sir, I simply cannot disrespect the uniform," I said. My uniform was incorrect. My shoulder patch read "Santa Ana College", not "Rancho Santiago." I had secured the old uniform from a colleague. Never told them, I took the penalty with pride. In the academy, we had an American LaFrance truck. A real truck. Detroit 12v71 power. It would not start. I'm al old school mechanic. Finding that the problem was quite simple, the 24 volt battery bay needed love, I reverted to friendships. Trojan Battery donated the requisite set of batteries. On start, I gave the system a few tweaks, and life was great. Love the old school, and those Detroits are in the blood, man.

My uncle was a trouble shooter that traveled all over North America to work on American LA France fire rigs. He had great pride in his work. Unfortunately he was killed in an auto accident in 2009. He would have been able to retire in a year.

IIRC American La France went out of business once and was brought back. The second time around they had a couple different owners, including Freightliner and their parent company Daimler-Chrysler. I have helped many drivers back into spaces both @ the truck stop & the shipper/reciever. Its important to me to help those drivers who have less experience do thier jobs safely. "Not that big a deal"? I'm sorry, but interfering with somebody else's property without consent is a big deal. I'm an ex-firefighter and as nice as it is to look at another truck, see how they've set it up compared to what you have used etc, even when I was still an active firefighter we'd still ask. A simple "you mind if I look" most often had them opening doors and showing off their pride and joy. Well, except when we got a new bushfire truck with air-conditioning. We closed the doors and windows and stayed in the truck until they knocked on the door and asked why we weren't out chatting with them like usual. Then they realised we had air-conditioning and spent the rest of the time pretending not to be jealous. I also agree with you about firetruck drivers. I was in a volunteer brigade and the mix of drivers was wide. From some who had "red truck syndrome" to others who's day job involved driving trucks. The good drivers stayed nice and calm when the lights and sirens were on, some others scared the passengers. I mean, driving an 18t truck and spinning / sliding the rear wheels out around a corner isn't exactly smart. Another thing to think of, is that they aren't just regular trucks, many also carry water in tanks. Also most ALL Australian firetruck carry water, from 500 gallons to almost 1000 gallons (2,000lts to 3,750 litres). Some of the trucks don't have baffles in those tanks, so half a load of water in them can move about quite a lot and throw the truck around. My day job was a fuel truck driver running old International "ACCO" trucks. (Australian Constructed Cab Over), the biggest being 6,340 gallons (24,000 litres) of aviation jet fuel. But many other drivers have never driven anything bigger than the firetruck they learnt to drive in.

It may not be a big deal for one person to check out the truck. But having 1000 people do it would. So where do you draw the line? You draw it at one is too many. Unless they ask.
@35manning
@35manning Год назад
@@bobh6728 I do not draw the line of people checking out the truck at ANY number. I draw the line of people INTERFERING with it at zero. I've basically never refused someone who asked me nor have I been refused when I've asked. But there are always times when it's not convenient or appropriate. Hence, the asking first. Oh, we also used to attend various community events where we opened up all the doors and let hundreds to thousands of people look through the trucks along with visits to the fire station. But that was all done under supervision and we invited people to look at the vehicles. On the other hand, at some jobs we would keep at least one person by the truck to act as security. On the rare occasion somebody would ask to look in the truck, they were normally told no. Mostly because we were on an active job and didn't have the time to waste supervising them.

Another eye opening video Steve... at least for folks like me! Sometime you may not realize what your actually recording! It's unfortunate but drivers are going to have to start making a complete video record of their loads before and after pick-up and delivery... plus install motion sensitive video surveillance all around their rigs with instant alerts! Let's start facing current realities here, cargo theft and associated assaults are at an all time high!! So this person is just "looking around"... what IF he/she is setting you up for a heist and come back later when your not around and get what the thieves just saw in your load! (Note to those that think LOCKS will stop even semi professional thieves... think again!) Your load and your rig is your bread and butter... protect it and yourself at all times! Unless there is a drastic change come November... things are not going to get better! P.S. I luv how you torque up the "music haters" 👏🏽 👍🏼☺

It is best not to respond to those music comments. By not responding, the Bible says they will become so upset that it is like pouring burning coals on their head. The theologian.

Cool Octoberfest music, please play the Beer Barrel Polka! Mothers pretty much always have custody of their children during the formative years, and the family courts see to this, yet the mothers don’t teach the concept that if it’s not yours then don’t even touch it. Obviously this fellow missed that lesson. It was right after the: look both ways before you cross the street at the crosswalk, lesson.

Its good to see the old wobble wagon back on the slab making the money again. Those were the good old days. My first ride was a corn picker cab over back in 1978. I hauled a dry box no touch load from Orlando Fla to Ga & dead headed back. I thought that was the greatest job in the world lol. The first thing I was told was if I was in a wreck I would be the first person on the scene, I never forgot that !!! 😁

The very few LaFrance rigs IFD has left are being cannibalized for parts to keep the other few running since you can no longer get replacement parts for the Eagle chassis and cabs. BTW, I LOVE the sound of that Cat!!! And with the Jake, it's music to my ears!!!! Thers something to be said for the old pre-EPA crap rigs!!!
