Born and raised in Detroit. These people are clueless. Never heard of "pannukakku". And we don't put cheese on our coneys. Missing Better Made chips, paczkis, Mackinac Island fudge, Vernor's, an assortment of craft beers and the pasties needed gravy.
You need a redo on the coney dog. Those are just Chili Dogs, those folks did not taste a true Coney. Beanless chili, mustard and onion on a natural casing hot dog that snaps. That is how you make a true coney.
I like the two bigger guys, they get it. In Michigan, we know comfort food, what's not to like about a chili dog? The others are pampered prudes, need to get out of Canoga Park more often.
I'm from Michigan, the Detroit area, and you totally forgot Better Made BBQ chips, Vernor's, and some local craft beers. Those chili dogs were suspect....we don't put cheese on them and that chili was way too chunky. LOL!
I love how the guy tries to explain how root vegetables don't grow in Michigan, and the Tundra:) Especially since Carrots are a huge export for Michigan:)
Michigan is a tundra??? Really are you serious? No. I was born and raised in Michigan and not only does it have all four seasons but they are some of the most beautiful seasons I've seen anywhere else, thank you. Trust me, if you want tundra, go to North Dakota.
Ummm yea North Dakota doesn't have tundra either, Lots of Agriculture... but in all fairness the Red River valley is really flat and open so in winter it does look a bit like the arctic.
The one who has "never had a hot pocket"? Yeah, she's had plenty of hot pockets. Everybody has had hot pockets. She even kind of admits she probably had hot pockets. She's a snob.
Never heard of pannukakku. I would have given them some Vernor's as well. I would however like to punch the guy in the glasses with that Sage shirt on for assuming that Michigan is an Arctic tundra that grows nothing. It is only that 8 months out of the year. ;)
Pasties, were brought over to Michigan by British miners ( Copper in MI) from Cornwall, but they were made popular by the numerous Finnish immigrants and to this day, if you visit the Kewanaw Peninsula in far northern Michigan, you will taste the Finnish version of this tasty meat pie., The hipsters who shun this wonderful creation? Are too Californicated to understand American goodness.
I never had pannukakku until I went to a Finnish-American club in Florida. My dad said he hadn't either. We both lived in Michigan the majority of our lives. And we're Finnish. Must be more popular ip north or something. But yeah I made it for Christmas and it is really easy and delicious. More traditional to eat it with berries.
I live in michigan as well.... flint area. That's a flint style Coney... Detroit uses a chili like sauce..flint uses a drier ground beef mix topped with onions and mustard. No cheese. Only kogel hotdogs are used in real michigan coneys. Made right here in flint. Also ive never heard of that pie they where eating... is it just me?
As a long time resident of Michigan I'm proud to share that a largely grown root veggie here is beets. We make a lot of granulated sugar from it (instead of cane).
that guy says that vegetables dont grow in the ground in Michigan 😒 dont be stupid. Its not always winter here. theres spring, summer, and fall here too.
Michigan food is awesome that's why make it on the daily basis. I love cooking food in Michigan. Michigan Michigan Michigan Michigan Michigan Michigan Michigan Hi5 from Michigan.
Vernors? Bettermade? Yellow Perch? or fricking Blueberries? We are literally the blueberry capital of the world and no blueberry pie or buckle? Pasties are still my favorite though.
When are you guys going to do an Illinois or Chicago taste test...I'm from IL and would love to see you guys eat what we eat...lol. By the way it does not snow 24/7 in Michigan so you can actually grow things in Michigan.
Those chili dogs looked sketchy! I've lived in Michigan my whole life and they've always looked more appealing than that. :) Next time you should add blue moon ice cream, michigan blueberries, and traverse city cherries!
Superman ice cream is a Michigan thing also by the way, who knew. And technically we have the second most diverse agriculture behind only California so suck it.
We also have great middle eastern food from the Arab capital of the US: Dearborn. No fudge? No Vernors? No Bettermade? No IPA? No kogel hot dogs? No apples? Beets? Michigan strawberries? No Cherry Republic? We do not put chunky chilli with beef hearts on our hot dogs. The last one was a stranger to me. You all should be ashamed of this video. Ask Michiganders what you should be trying next time. Did you even do research?
I've lived in 4 tourist towns in Michigan my whole life. I've had the Swedish pancakes, which are smaller and more tender than reg pancakes. I'll have to go to the UP and try that Finnish style pancakes now. Pasties need gravy, Vernor's Ginger Ale is the bomb, and GIBBY'S FRIES YUM, nuf said! With Love from Traverse City!
I went to the UP over Memorial Day weekend with some friends of mine. I was in the mood for a pasty, which we were planning on getting from the Lake Superior Brewing Company. Alas, the last one they had for the day had been sold ten minutes before we got there. I was crestfallen, however, they have delicious pizza.
Pasties, pickled herring, braunschweiger, vinegar fries, german potato salad, kiabasa with suarkraut, deep fried smelt, and smoked whitefish. Also, any animal that walks. Thank you, a 'gander..
WHY IS THERE CHEESE ON THOSE CONEY DOGS?! You NEVER put cheese on them. A Coney Dog consist of a steamed Kogel Vienna, white bun, Coney sauce, yellow mustard and white onion.
Superman, Blue Moon and Mackinaw Island Fudge Ice creams. re-do on the Coneys from one of the "original recipe shops" with just chili, mustard, onions. and not exclusive to Michigan deep fried walleye and perch are staples especially on Friday fish fry's
I laughed so hard at this, for some reason. And now you guys need to do a "wisconsin taste test" because why wouldn't you wanna try beer cheese soup? 😋🍻
stuffed quohogs, hot weiners (all the way), lobster rolls, coffee milk, clam cakes and clam chowder, dels lemonade, stuffed cherry peppers....its real life fun and delicious and its everything.
Ok I have only heard of the Cony dog I used to eat them at dog'n suds. Seriously though how can you have a Michigan food taste test without Verners Ginger ale?
What no Mackinaw Island Fudge?!!! Manny & Adam were soo cheated I have to say they were complete Foodies... And not enough gravy in the Pasties They were a bit dry. Beef Heart Chili... Venison Heart would be correct Yet I understand that particular ingredient would have been a bit hard to obtain in California. Malt vinegar on French Fries then dip them in Mayonnaise. That is soo damn good your Cardiologist will have the heart attack
to bad you didn't do a coney taste test because Coney's are serious business in Michigan. being from the Flint area Angelo's flint style is of course the best but then there are multiple Detroit styles. Maybe an idea for a new video have californians decide?
Pasties and Pannukaku is a northern Michigan thing but celebrated by Traditional Michiganders, Coney Dog, faygo are very much lower right side of Michigan thing. Grand Rapids, well not sure what it contributes in the food category, perhaps bland mash potatoes. Lot of Missing Michigan Staple foods missing from this video.
They didn't try Vernors. Whether you like it or not (which I don't understand how anyone could not), everyone knows what Vernors is. I've living here 40 years, and I've never heard of pannukakku.
I have lived in Michigan my whole life and have never had any of these things. Being a vegetarian is part of it, but I just don't really hear about any of these in Grand Rapids. We do have a coney shop, but no one really talks about it too much. Everyone is all about Yesterdog, which has a really weird veggie dog that I don't care for.
I grew up in Michigan and have lived in LA for the last 15 years. First of all, these people look more like the people I grew up with in Michigan and not anyone I've ever met in LA, let alone 'know'. What in the hell was that first thing they ate... that looked like an empanada? The Coney dog is, wait, from MICHIGAN!? No it's not, it's from CONEY ISLAND. Pannukakku is from Finland. "Michigan" food is thinks like venison, fudge, salt and vinegar fries. Except for Faygo (a Michigan staple), I've never even heard of ANY of this stuff and I lived in Michigan for 24 years. Fail.
Owen VanTiem - My 'attempt at trolling'!? WTF are you talking about? That's such an idiotic thing to say when there's a differing opinion or experience than yours. Clearly you didn't even bother reading the huge discussion we've had on here.
Fail? I grew up, and live in Detroit... Everything they tried are still big here. Pasties originated in the U.P., and coney dog's have yet to make it's way past Ohio. When I went to school in NY, I attempted to get a coney from Brooklyn, and everyone thought I was crazy. I have never heard of salt and vinegar fries, but now I'm determined to find some.
The first thing they ate was a pasty, which is native to the UP, though it can be found in the lower peninsula as well at specialty shops. The way we dress our coney dogs is only unique to Michigan. The coney dog may have originated in NYC but they way we do it and how the coney island restaurant is an institution here is Michigan only. And while I've never had Pannukakku is from Finland, Michigan has the largest concentration of Finnish Americans which makes that culture unique too us. (Like the Norwegians in Minnesota or Irish in Boston) Perhaps you've lived in LA too long and need to come home back to your roots.
