This pure B.S. I remember the sirens in Midland, Michigan going off when I was 2 year old and everyone went down the basement to for safety. Except me. I was so curious, I went outside and stood on the front porch, amazed at the black swirling clouds, lightning, and the wind making a rumbling sound. Fortuantely, my father realized that I wasn't in the basement, so he came upstairs and found me on the porch. Good thing, because a tornado touched down a few minutes later, tearing through a neighborhood one block away. Being a small one, there wasn't much damage, but it was that storm which peaked my interest in severe weather. Unfortunately, Michigan had one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history: the 1953 Flint-Beecher EF5. Three years later, a pair of EF5's ripped through Michigan, west of Grand Rapids, leaving a trail of destruction 60 miles long. After graduating college, I started chasing storms in earnest. It was the 1980's, before the Internet and GPS. My target area included Delta Township, Ingham County, and Livingston County, because those were areas where you would likely see a tornado if the weather conditions were right. Tornado season in Michigan is typically July and August, when the big thunderheads form with a sheered off top. Classic supercells were a rare bird and most tornadoes in Michigan were EF0-EF2. If a day's chasewas uneventful, but big storms were overhead, it never failed to visit Munith the next morning. That one-horse town became known as "mini tornado alley". Despite damaged roofs and trees toppled over, the bakery always opened the door by 6 AM and fresh hot bread from the oven was ready. Now I live in Finland. Here's waterspouts form on the coast in summer time. It was 2005 when I had the good fortune to be standing on the balcony of my condo and there it was - a small thunderhead caught between 2 massive cloud formations. Those 2 clouds formed enough wind sheer to get the smaller cloud rotating and down she came - a classic funnel maturing into a cone tornado. It touched ground and heading right toward the manufacturing sector, then just before it smacked into Valmet Automotive, it dissipated. I sent my photos to the Finnish Weather Service and they were amazed because no-one else had reported it.
