It was cool to see Timmy Chang and Chad Owens. Owens went on to a great career in the CFL. Chang was heralded as the next superstar of the CFL's Hamilton Tiger Cats before he played a single down. That didn't work out as well as it should have. If Chang was given a chance to develop he could have been a CFL superstar.
This brings back the memories. It snowed at my house this night, staying in and watching this game was an early Christmas present. Timmy Chang and Chad Owens were a great combo! June Jones knew how to make this offense go too.
I had just gotten home from my company Christmas party that night and had left the TV on in my apartment - this game was only in the 2nd quarter and was 21-0 - I went to shower and came out and it was 21-14 and thought "aww what the heck I'll just watch the rest of it" and was glad I did. Crazy, wacky game that was worth staying up until 2:00AM for.
Yup bro! Another classic one right here! What do you think about Hawaii vs Colorado State game?? Bringing back the run and shoot?? Do you see potential this year?? That Cole McDonald's seems like a promising quarterback. And it's about time they bought back the run and shoot.
their schedule is very manageable this year and McDonald is more mobile than Chang or Brennan ever was, i think it will come down to how the defense improves over the course of the year, it will be a fun season for sure
Was pleasantly surprised at how we looked. McDonald looks like he can take us to a bowl game at the very least. Rolo bringing back to the run n shoot looks like a great move now. If we can beat Navy this weekend, I feel that we could be in for a special season this year.
Out of the blue I know but with your impressive collection of UH sport moments wondering if you had any access to a play I've been searching for since I seen it live as kid... THE TES WHITLOCK ONE HANDED GAME WINNER vs BYU?? Thanks in advance.
That is a game I wish I had but unfortunately I do not. I've been wanting to see the full game again myself. I know a buddy who's dad has some of the basketball games recorded so I will ask him the next time I get a chance.
When they mentioned Northwestern had so many penalties and Michigan State penalties when they never realize that on Astroturf Hawaii has speed! These Big Ten teams have huge lineman but are SLOW as HELL! They HAVE to hold or their QB gets sacked! They were getting caught holding and called on it! Do they not understand what holding is? Don't they call that in the Big 10? Hawaii is USED to a passing offense so they know NOT TO HOLD!
Those were the days. 80% of the starters from hawaii on both sides of the ball (and you wonder why UH got into so much fights as a team back in those days?!) Confetti all over the field... All game. Alcohol for all 4 quarters. Good times
I heard this game was rigged to ensure the ratings and crowd for the Hawaii Bowl would sellout. If Hawaii doesn't make the Hawaii bowl then nobody goes to the game or watches the game so it makes no money. Combine that with the fact that this was a 12 AM ET kickoff in a game that only two fan bases cared about and it being 2004 so internet highlights (and sports center being able to show whatever they wanted) ensured the refs could have more freedom to rig this game and get away with it. Calling holding before the ball is thrown is fine but waiting to throw a flag until the ball is 40 yards down the field multiple times is ridiculous
**no internet highlights.** The time of the year implied nobody was going to watch the game. The start time being midnight ET (7 pm in Hawaii) implied only serious hardcore fans were gonna stay up late and watch the whole thing. Most fans would wake up the next morning and see the final score being 41-38 with no further information and think "oh well we lost" without knowing any context to how controversial it all was. In any case, if a conspiracy theory about College Football being rigged existed, this game would probably be the best example supporting that claim.
