I’m 37 now and we rented that pay per view. It was the only ppv we ever got to rent- we weren’t rich by any means. It was at my grandparents house and I still think of that match all the time.
Shit was expensive no matter who ya were back in the day. We're talking $39.99 to $59.99 each Month for the WWF PPV. IN Your Houses being cheaper/package deals. Then again, Everyone I knew (allegedly) - Their Parents had a Black Box (allegedly) & oh how glorious it was (allegedly). I still have every PPV from late 98 to like 02 on VHS My Cat's Uncle's Nephew recorded. It's no wonder Cable Companies have all their customers by the balls nowadays - My Generation's Parents ruined it for everybody. looool
@@jascha2765 That's really interesting! PPV & the stranglehold some cable companies & Providers have on certain regions & markets is a whole other thing. The only thing I recall from the PPV's being like $30-$50 minimum was you got both showings (one after the other - what a bargain) & WWF always ran some sort of promo where you'd send in your PPV Receipt. Which, many of didn't have (alleged ly). As an adult, I'd have paid any amount of money for the like 5"x5" piece of the actual ring they gave away to people for Wrestlemania XV.
That’s a nice memory. I remember watching this with my little brother and us looking at each other in disbelief. We were shocked and I’ll never forget the look on his face.
Mick. You LITERALLY put together one of the most impactful important wrestling matches that has ever been put together. It was magic. It’s never happened since. It will never happen again. You are a part of history. That’s why everyone is so obsessed with it still
I met mick was I was a kid. He came down to Putnam, CT at a ford dealership and he was the nicest wrestler I’ve ever met! He took the time to answer questions, sign everything, and even did the cactus jack pose with me. I’ll always appreciate him for that because I’ve waited hours in line to meet certain people and they didn’t even care I existed. Mick made sure you felt included and appreciated. Thank you mick
Mick and a crew of wrestlers showed up at the hotel I worked night shift at around 2009 in upstate NY. Looking at a lobby of huge dudes and not recognizing any of them the first thing I said was " Where's Undertaker?" And mick responded "...yea that's what they all say." A bit later on he came down for a chat and clued me in on who everyone was and then lit me up at the front desk just for fun and to give a small show to the people checking in. Super cool dude. Definitely haven't forgotten that night.
The best thing about that was Terry was genuinely worried for Mick and I recall Mick telling the story somewhere and he said him and the Funker were skwabbling at the time. They weren’t getting along over something dumb and silly and Terry was still genuinely worried for Mick and it helped them squash the issue they were having.
Incredible wasn’t it? It’s certainly the most memorable match in WWF history in my opinion, I still watch the match all the time, I’ll never forget it. Mick Foley is special and I don’t think there will ever be anybody who could fill his shoes
Its insane he wrestled the day after that match. He basically had 2 car crashes within 5 minutes of each other and was taking another table bump off a cell like 2 weeks later.
@@teelowteelow356 yeah means “exactly” if im not mistaken, and why did you need to comment that? not everyone is born in english countries. That comment was really unnecessary
Favorite promo with Mick Foley is where he comes out as mankind against Triple H and says that he can’t face him and that he owes Triple H a substitute in that match and rips off his mask and it’s cactus Jack. I was so hyped when that happened. then I used to watch that promo over and over it had the music if someone can find that please link it for me so I can rewatch it and relive the memories
Wrestlers, but Mick in particular, are the modern version of old fishermen in a bar telling tales of sea monsters. The way he tells his feats is so epic, so full of background thoughts, they will take 20 minutes to tell a 4 minutes segment, and it all embelishes the story. That's a born storyteller.
If I ever.get the chance to meet Mick, I would love to ask him about his first with Tommy Dreamer and his "these fans will eat you alive!" When he sides with Raven because the story telling was brilliant and felt like the first appearance of Mankind as he was turning away from Cactus Jack. The emotion he puts into the promo was amazing.
Mick was the guy who put me in contact with a local promotion where I wrestled for a few years. He's a great guy and never let success inflate his ego.
My daughter was five when I showed her this match Mick was taking about. She thought Mark killed Mick. Once she saw Mick moving around, she was hooked on wrestling. She 18 now and still loves to watch wrestling with me. Thanks guys for what I deem as the greatest match I have ever seen in my 60 years on this marble.
Micks a ledgend me and my 2 brothers migrated to australia we had nothing only thing we would do was hire wwf videos and that match stayed in our hearts forever
He came to Clark's Trading Post for years w/his family here in NH, even posing with the "Wolfman". Wish I could've been there when he was. Love to meet him.
"Check to see if he's still alive." Is something Marrk could have said out of character loud enough that fans could hear, and we'd all sat he was still in character.
the thing is, however-loud Taker said it, the fans would Never have been able to hear him...theyd already blown the roof off the building by the time Mick was airborne, on his direct flight to the ground...
Mick is the greatest professional wrestler and sports entertainer the world has ever seen. Mick is also a really nice, kind and genuinely good person the world is lucky to have in it. THANK YOU MICK, cactus jack, dude love, mankind,
There's not many PPV's I remember from 25+ years ago but this is one of them. I watched it with a good pal as I'd got the PPV on Sky TV and my pal came round to watch it. Something daft like 3am and we're watching Mick Foley flying off a 30 foot cage thinking he was actually dead. But I remember it mainly because my pal some years later moved to America and started a new life, was doing great but was killed by a drunk driver as he walked home one night. I hadn't seen him in years and hoped to again one day but alas it shall never be. R.I.P John, I'll never EVER forget us watching that match in my old house all those years ago.
also, after watching a few episodes of the SixFeetUnder podcast, i could totally imagine Mark Calaway (hiding underneath all that hair) taking a quick Character-Break to say "that was a humdinger of a landing you took!"
Being in school at the time of this match, it was the talk of the school for months. And that match will live longer than all of us. When you think of WWF/WWE hell any promotion. You have to think of this match, it's been almost 30 years now. People are still talking about it. Mick always had the over the top gimmicks, Mick will always be one of my favorite SUPERSTARS /Pro Wrestlers/Hardcore Champions of all time. Back in the attitude era was wrestling. I'm proud to say, I grew up watching the true icons of the business. Without that era, we wouldn't have anything today. Can't forget about ECW either, they had some crazy insane matches in their prime as well. But nothing like HITC match between The Undertaker vs Mankind.
I would have a ton of questions to ask Mick besides HIAC. I figured he's talked it to death. I wanna hear again about that bad bump from Vader outside the ring on WCW Saturday Night.
He took a crazy flat back bump, in WCW, off the elevated entrance ramp vs the nasty boys. He didn't move at all and Saggs was looking at him, took a metal corn shovel and hit him straight in the face. That was the finish.. It had to be because I think he was legit knocked out
While I understand that he is allowed I'm glad that Mick addressed his wardrobe choice for this media appearance. I was scrolling and saw Mick and Taker. I kept right on going. New stories sure; I bet the video is 12 years old. I went back up to check the date. I saw that it was Mick talking now and figuring as how I'll always listen to whatever Mick has to say I clicked on the video. As the video loaded I thought; It would be cool if Mick showed up as Dude Love. The video started and I saw Mick sat on the stage in those clothes. I thought; oh, I see that he did.
Never have I ever thought of mankind vs the undertakers hell in a cell matches as Man fighting death & the cage is life. Saw the feuds & all but this interview painted such a great picture of Life.
I remember watching Mick hit the table and I thought he was dead. Then he climbed the cage and took the bump through the roof. I was 100% sure it was an accident and he was again dead. Unquestionably the most iconic spot in wrestling history and it always will be. There will never be another Mick and they will never allow that level of risk again.
met foley and ziggler 2yrs ago on his comdy tour foley is very laid back just didnt want any 1 recording for some wierd reason but go a few clips along with ziggler he told the hiac story no 1 today can top that HIAC match not even moxley bleeding every week still get chills when watching it top 5 best matches
I just can't help but believe that once Vince heard about Mick's finish, he made sure they built that b***h weak enough to make sure it wasn't going to take multiple chokeslams. A deadly finish means more than a clumsy finish to Vince.
AL SNOW JOKES!!!!!! What’s this? A “Best of All Snow” tape? Wh…What…it’s empty???? Oh I get it, there IS no “Best of Al Snow” tape!!! HO HO HO THIS IS THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER!!!!
After the level of concussions Mick has endured the fact he can not only write a New York Time's best selling book but be able to make an insane narrated story to go with it. Truly incredible.
everyone always asks about is specific bumps or a specific match but with somone like Mick I woul want to know why in general. He built a reputation for being one of the nicest guys outside the ring... super polite talkative... but his career was brutal... where was the difference... what inside of him made him go from nice guy to i want to do these brutal matches
i would love to ask Mick about the land mines in the ring from his days in japan. those messed with me so hard when i saw as a kid . always wondered wtf they were and if they actually burned or if that was a work
When people say wrestling is fake, I get pissed off because i remember these matches. Put those people in the ring with the Undertaker and let them go through what Mick went through that night, let's see if they will live to say "wrestling is fake" again.
If you’re talking in terms of importance to the wrestling world, I can agree with that list. If you’re talking in terms of actual wrestling ability, Foley and Austin should be no where near that list. 😂
