The Fog announces itself as an old-fashioned spook-show in its first scene: kids huddle around a campfire as John Houseman spins a morbid tale about a band of shipwrecked sailors murdered 100 years ago this very night. Those sailors vowed to return and that’s just what they do, using the fog that blankets this little seaside town as their method of transportation. Starring Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis and Janet Leigh, the film was a solid success bringing in nearly $22 million on its $1 million budget. The Fog was remade in 2005, directed by Rupert Wainwright and starring Selma Blair.

Mick Garris sounds like a guy who does horror right - "respect the genre" was a quote that Robert Englund shared with him that rings true for me.

"The Fog" is a great movie. Carpenter did manage to keep one situation in the "Lewton style". The crew and passengers of the ship are described as lepers who had spent 100 years beneath the sea. And, Carpenter lets that percolate, only giving a brief flash of their hideousness at the lighthouse. I loved it on release. I love it now. Great cast.

This movie is to John Carpenter's catalog what The Incredible Hulk is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Excellent in it's own way but never talked about enough. I love this movie :)

Another problem with the test was the film was too short, that is why the opening with Houseman was shot to pad the film out. But the biggest problem is the plot is pretty weak. It just needed its nuances and development worked on a little more. A problem with a lot of Carpenters films. The films always feel like he was satisfied with the first draft.

I remember back in either 80 or 81 Avco re-released The Fog with Phantasm as a double feature (if you look around on RU-vid there is the trailer for the double feature) . I wonder if Mick Garris had any influence on that decision, they are the perfect pairing.

Excellent. I do miss the idea once proposed that fog machines would fill the Grauman's Chinese Theater addition with the title character. But memories of Paul Newman's theater scene in "Torn Curtain" obviously gave the Mann's chain some concern.

I'm amazed that Carpenter today thinks nothing of Val Lewton's subtle style, as he proclaimed in the British documentary series A History of Horror (2010) calling it boring and overrated, while it clearly must've inspired his own directorial approach to the genre yet now he denounces this influence apparently or at least criticizes it severely. That statement was more shocking than anything in his own more recent films.

Is there a definitive edition of John Carpenter's The Fog one should buy on Blu-Ray? One version that might look better than any previous ones? I picked up the scandinavian 2009 version the other day, but I wonder if Shout Factory's 2013 might look better?

Karsten Fjellheim The Scream Factory Blu-ray is the best presentation so far, it was supervised by cinematographer Dean Cundey and has more picture in the frame than other editions.

Be sure you get the one with Adrienne Barbeau. The Fog was remade some years ago. It was not well done IMHO. Lots more gore and jump shots, lots less atmosphere or logic. Also, the original had much better casting.

Personally,i grew frustrated with this one,the fright department is great,nice call post-Halloween,but Carpenter usually exploits very well his group of characters,here too few of them are interesting,and not much acting, beside the romance duo(Curtis/Atkins),too bleak,if you love the movie before you watch it,of course you don't notice it i guess,i've learned to love Christine quite a lot more,better treated despite the silly narrow story.
