Mickey Newbury appears on TNN in 1992 where he sings BIRMINGHAM JAIL/DOWN IN THE VALLEY.. He then discusses introducing Kris Kristofferson to Ralph and answers a question about the origin of his arrangement of THE AMERICAN TRILOGY then in an additional clip performs it.He seems a bit testy in the discussion with Ralph.
A different date is given at his official web site www.mickeynewberry.com:
"Imagine merging Civil War era songs of the North, South and African-American slaves into one unified movement. On a starry evening in May of 1970 while appearing on stage at the Bitter End West, Newbury did just that. The impromptu arrangement just came together on that magical night and in one moment of brilliant inspiration. Since then, “An American Trilogy” has become one of the most interpreted pieces in history with 558 versions, ranging from the London Symphony Orchestra to Elvis Presley’s glitzy Vegas production, eagle cape and all. At the end of 1999, some 600,000 people in the U.K. selected Presley’s version of “Trilogy” as the number one American song of the millennium. That survey - a joint effort undertaken by HMV, Channel 4 and Classic FM - required 12 months to complete. And in 2008, a crowning benediction, England’s Whitehaven Male Voice Choir performed “An American Trilogy” for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Constructed of “Dixie” slowed to a quarter-time ballad (I wish I was in the land of cotton), “Battle Hymn of the Republic” (Glory glory hallelujah) and “All My Trials" (So hush little baby / Don’t you cry / You know your daddy’s bound to die), the People’s Anthem binds century-old Southern, Northern and minority issues into a
common lament. The song, Brian Hinton wrote, has become “the ultimate example of Americana. It somehow evokes the birth of modern America.” Actually, the movement has grown. From America to South Africa, the song has become a pillar in the repertoire of church groups and male voice choirs the world over. "

I wish I could have found this video 19 years ago. I had just met Mick and asked him if I could see that guitar he had been carving on. He asked me how I knew about that guitar, and I told him that I had seen it on this Ralph Emery show on a VHS tape I had borrowed from a neighbor. He said he never got to see a recording of that show and would sure like to see it. Well, I did my level best to find it, but I had since moved away and upon contacting my old neighbor never could locate that tape. I did get to look at the beautifully carved guitar though, but was afraid to pick it up. He had another guitar that I did pick up and look at though, an acoustic with a picture of his wife Susan airbrushed on the back. I think that one impressed me just a bit more. Anyhoot, I always will regret not coming through on finding that taping of this particular Ralph Emery show as he did have a fondness for Ralph, even though there was a misunderstanding about mention of him in one of Mick’s songs. But, that’s another story. Sad to say, Mick died about two years later. Doggone My Soul! Thank you for posting this, I really do appreciate it and have added it to my favorites.

I enjoyed these songs from leyte island, philippines. Birmingham jail and Down in the valley were two of the songs I first learned in early 1950's as a boy.

Mickey was great and good to hear how the Trilogy was constructed. As for the shows host. 😮 can’t believe he asked what President asked for Dixie to be played 🙄

I played Mick a tune a bit back at his grave. This was right after I had left Hickory lake to Oregon. I was standing on the same boat dock he used to live at, but as the day progressed the paranoia over the pandemic was closing the area down and I ended up flying to Oregon to help family. I found his grave a couple days later. A beautiful small place hidden back in the hills next to a river.

Jody I wish I could have been there... I’ve had Mickey in my soul since I was 17, and that was a long time ago. That you for that act of grace towards this man... his songs just stick to your heart. Amazing he came up with this on the spot... that’s a sign of true genius.

Just listened to your music... very much like Mickey! Your voice is very close as well. One thing about Mickey is the subtlety, in words and concept... another is about the shortness of his songs. But I’ll be listening to more of your work... I truly like it. Good work man, and thank you for it.

Jan Hammer Aloha Jan... sorry, been busy regrouping after the devastating slam from hurricane Matthew... but here I am, back online - hey, that's a HUGE compliment, but I'd be embarrassed to post me playing ANYTHING! Thanks, buddy... moving back to Maui in December!

By the way, thought you'd get a kick out of this: I used to live in Jerry Jeff's birthplace! He was probably born in the hospital I used to work in - A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital! That (the Leatherstocking region of the Catskills of Upstate NY) IS God's country... breathtakingly beautiful!

Nelson Sorry to be so tardy in responding. I had C spine surgery in late Oct. then spent a month in a rehab facility I am now the proud owner of two titanium rods plus 8 screws from C to C 5.It will be awhile before I post again but recovery is ongoing. I understand your reluctance to post your guitar playing. I have the same opinion of mine. My best.. Jan.

I understand and am sorry for what you've been through. Sounds like you're on the mend. Hope so. I'm in upheaval trying to move without help, vehicle or funds, so I'm hardly here at this point. So you know. Good thing's that the light at the end of this tunnel is back to tropical paradise. Ginormous amount of work to make it happen, though. So be well, get better, and cheers, mate! Aloha Nelson
