Two rumors were said that she had a crush on Mickey everyone knew but him or he may have known but either didn't tell her he liked her as a sister or he told her he didn't feel that way about her. He was more interested in women like Lana Turner or Ava Gardner who he eventually married. Second rumor was that she wasn't interested in him at all in a documentary about Mickey a friend said Mickey remarked he should've married Judy he would've been better off.
My grandmother was a musician in vaudeville and she remembered playing for a girl named Frances Gumm. She thought she was the most talented and adorable little girl.
She was so gorgeous when she was younger. Then there was the weight gain / weight loss cycle, the drugs, booze. Poor Judy. She was a skeleton when she passed. What a tragic life. What an incredible talent. What a beautiful soul.
I truly wish that Judy had been signed a little older. MGM signed her at a critical age when most kids go through awkward stages. Instead of loving and nurturing her through it, they interfered with drugs and ruined her life. She didn’t need drugs, she would have blossomed on her own like most beauties do.
Judy and Mickey didn't just have great chemistry, they invented great chemistry and set the standard for the rest. You just can't miss the love and affection they had for each other 💜👏☝✌🇺🇸
In an interview he described his relationship with Judy like this. "It was as if we were from the same womb ". They were so much more than just friends. They could feel each other's thoughts .
@@basketballgirl723 Like he said himself Judy was the love of his life, I don't know if that love was fraternal, friendship, platonic or romantic but I know that it was deep and true, the most important one
If it wasn't for her mother and MGM, I quite possibly would've seen her alive as we did with Mickey. Just such a shame that a beautiful talented young lady died so young.
@@lvelez1999 I love Betty White I remember her most on the Golden Girls & to think of all the Golden Girls I didn't think she would be the last one standing. But I'm glad we still have her.

It makes me feel grateful that they were there and have enriched so many people’s lives. And they still do.
ommg!;) i see how meacky is playing and shes just singing moving with such grace such beauti. it melts me maan!;) i dont know why they say shes the ugly duckly. i think personatly. in my opionion. shes soo beautiful and more!;) thats how i feel maan.! i dont care what anybody thinks!;)
Judy was Beautiful big Doll eyes and the most beautiful perfect lips and long legs,MGM was CRAZY she was prettier than the people she was held up against and told he she was ugly! I suppose it was because she was more girl next door than Femme Fatale.
I am sure MGM knew exactly what they had with Judy. They knew she had so much more to offer than just a pretty face, and I think they broke her down this way because being so young and easy to intimidate and influence they abused her in this way, and Judy herself probably was also somewhat self conscious about her looks surrounded by established stars, dancers, and models on the MGM lot on a regular basis, making it even easier for the studio executives to compare her to others and to bully her. She was a child with a lot of growing up to do both physically and mentally when they contracted her. She still had her baby fat that most burn off in their later teens which she did. They were greedy and didn't want to pay her what she rightfully deserved for all her talents. She was the girl next door and she was soft, so it was easy for them to hammer and chisel away at her and keep her from realizing her value and self worth. Also after the death of her father she didn't really have anyone who truly loved, cared for, encouraged her, and who could or would stand up for her. Mickey certainly loved her, but he was also under contract and part of the studio machine. If I am wrong it wouldn't make sense that the studio was furious at the thought of one of their stars singing in a barnyard setting, saying it was demeaning, and demanding that it be removed from the film on several occasions. Without which we would not have her most iconic moment in 'The Wizard of Oz' and her singing of 'Over The Rainbow'. Thank heavens for Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, and for George Cukor for the changes he made in her appearance, making her look more natural instead of with a blonde wig and babydoll makeup, and also for telling Judy to just be herself. To me these three men are the true creators of this masterpiece of classic film that will live forever because of theirs, Judy's, and the rest of the amazing actors and actresses talented, and devoted to the telling of this story, performances.
Mickey Rooney wasn't know for his singing voice, but honestly he has a very nice singing voice. His rendition of the verse of Our Love Affair is really quite beautiful
@Daniel King His marriage to Ava Gardner was set up to get her publicity and jobs. It didn't work because she couldn't act. She did eventually get parts.
Ashley Johnson he wasn't interested in Judy sexually. Like many men, he is superficial with regards to beauty. It's a tragic human trait to be obsessed with appearances over heart.
I alwas have in my mind the song " Good morning, good morning" . Today I realised that Judy sang it! My mother used to sang it, she had gone 6 years ago, she was 87 years old. She loved Judy Garland...
I will never forget meeting him when I worked as a sous chef at State West Hotel in Toronto in the 90s. He was there for a show he was appearing in and for me it was even better than winning any of the gold medals I had won in international culinary competitions. Many of the staff had no idea just how big a star he was but when he was done after a few months everyone knew just how wonderful he was.
You could have never paired a better together than Mickey and Judy. I'm very thankful they allowed Judy to go her way to be her own Shining Star. They didn't do that out of the kindness of their hearts cost them millions of dollars in today's standards it would be billions of dollars. You can understand the eyes of the world were on her all the time, everywhere, every second of her life. She had no peace or privacy. I see this play out through throughout our history wiser words were never spoken. What does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul
@@patrickbush9526 Losing a soul in exchange for eternal fame is sometimes a comforting thought for many. I don't think either Judy or Mickey could stand to live a life that nobody would remember afterwards. Judy was ofcourse abused by the industry, but deep down I think Judy herself wanted that fame too. So much that I think she was willing to go as far as selling her soul for it. She indeed have gained the world and probably have lost her soul, but what a life she lived, and what a gift she gave to the world. Therefore I think Judy might have found peace in knowing that she meant something to many. And that her work was not in vain.
I agree with you. Mickey was a cad and cheated all the time. I think he felt too close to her to subject her to his difficult personality and his demons. They were twin souls.
Absolutely. I know Mickey had a bad rep but I also feel the real love. It’s palpable. Somehow I don’t think even he would screw around if he fully acknowledged it. I have to say this is a rare feeling I ever have with anyone, even in my own sphere of real-time people.
We will never again have such talents as Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland ever again. They were indeed very, very special. "At MGM there were truly more Stars than there were in the Heavens."
This is a really nice comment that deserves more attention. I admittedly know less about how Mickey was treated in the industry but I know Judy was treated about as poorly as any star deserves. It's nice to think that she had a good friend like Mickey from early on and got to work with him for a lot of her career. RIP to them both.
I accidentally caught this and so glad I watched it. This is one of the best Mikey/Judy retrospectives I’ve ever seen. Later in his life, Mikey had a habit of not being the best of narrators but he was subdued and articulate in this one. Great work!
That Judy Garland thought she wasn’t beautiful enough saddens me because she was beautiful inside and out. She was humble and not arrogant like the other stars of her time. But she was really the greatest talent. Love her and Micki together too
He seemed like such a lovely guy it really upset me to hear the story about elder abuse. Now they are fighting over his money. Let the poor guy rest RIP Mickey 💔
I watched a lot of mickey rooney films back in the 90s as a kid during midday movie but I didn't realise he was paired with judy in a lot of them, they seemed to work well together.
According to Ava Gardner, who married him when she just got to Hollywood, he was the greatest womanizer ever. He jumped on everything that moved. You couln't leave your labrador in front of him for to long. And he lived about twice as long as Judy did. In the end he had to go to those sad events where old Hollywood greats sell their photographs with an autograph, and for a picture with them you have to pay, well, at least 20 dollars. He himself said of this: "I didn t expect to live this long. The money is running out." But I do think that, when he went where Judy had been for a long time, they started putting on a show together…..
Now that we have all this therapy and analysis, I personally think Mickey chased women to the extent that he did as an outlet for the confusing abuse by the studios and making up for being short and whatever bullshit he was being fed to keep him underpaid. It’s truly amazing that he keeps such a positive spin on things as he talks about those gays in Hollywood.
It's very sad to see Mickey Rooney in his twilight years to finally have the chance to tell the truth about what Judy's mother, Louis Mayer and Hollywood did to her as a child.
Her singing and dancing during the 'Embraceable You' number is some of her best work, and in that dress she was simply stunning. It makes me wonder exactly how many rehearsals must have been done to make everyone work together like gears in clockwork. Simply marvelous!
One issue that is so ironic about these stories is that since Mickey and Judy were such important assets to MGM that their salaries did not reflect it. They certainly deserved a percentage of the earnings of the films, as some stars did to compensate for lower salaries. Also they certainly deserved greater treatment than they received. If they had had Managers and the strength of SAG behind them, things might have been different.
The studios would lie and threaten to blackball them if they spoke out. Universal would tell the Three Stooges their movies weren’t doing well, except they were keeping the studio going.
The way MGM treated Judy is beyond despicable regardless of how she looked but I've always been baffled by their opinion that she wasn't pretty enough. She looks great in any of these movies. Who the fuck was determining who was appropriately good looking at MGM??
Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland were a pairing that had no equal in their time. Both were highly talented stars with a genuine love for what they did and each other. I saw the movies they made well after they were made but I loved them all. I hope they found a place in heaven where they could be together. They both deserved so much more than they got out of Hollywood.
Those Mickey Rooney movies were the best, something about his acting that had me hooked when I was a young kid. Like he was this high energy person. Yeah, bigger than life is correct.
Judy Garland's stunning beauty singing "How About You" at 9:41 would still turn men's heads today if she walked down any street in 2021.....Just perfection!
Andy was talent from head to toe and Judy was beyond belief as well. The two of them together, great chemistry on screen and the obvious respect for each other is awesome to watch. Behind the scenes is another story--but as a viewer we are smitten!
Her version of A Star is Born is the best one! The emotion that Judy sang with in the last song.... it's just not as real in the newer ones. Striesand and Gaga acted the part, Judy was the character.
Mickey and Judy will never ever be replaced. Those days are gone never to return. Loved both of these talented jewels.May they Rest in Peace. Not forgotten💜💜
damianop100 he wasn't good looking and he was short, but yes gosh was he expressive! Expressiveness is very important in performance. More than good looks. In those days expression was very important. When you compare it to these days where everyone is now beautiful and handsome but so many have as much personality as wet concrete. Performers these days by comparison are so boring, overly sexualised and tiresome to watch . Even Beyoncé to me is extremely tiresome. So ridiculously overly sexual and over the top. Modern day performers are excessive and so egoic it's absurd.
I know Judy talked so poorly of her mother, but her mother saw her talent and got her noticed. It’s very unfortunate that Judy was so over worked and kept going on medications she was brilliant, beyond talented and I wish she could have had many more years to share her brilliance such a beautiful star gone way too early. I love her and am thankful that her movies and television shows can be seen. God bless her for giving all of us so much pleasure and love there will never be someone so special to the entertainment industry!!
No TV. Movies were everything in terms of entertainment unless you went to see it live. Movies meant so much for children to go watch on Saturday afternoons. A special treat at the end of the week. And of course during the war a chance to escape the worries and fear.
I would love to have gotten the chance to speak with Judy or Mickey. Two incredibly talented people who were groomed as children to work, work, work. I think Mickey maybe kept his "grand, acting" persona more in interviews, but he was a great storyteller. And he certainly did not deserve the elder abuse he suffered later in life. My only hope is that they've both found rest now.
Such a young girl and singing those standards songs by the best song writers in the world required genuine talent, Those songs had melody lines that were complex to play and sing. I suppose most of the people in America today consider this music out of Vogue and fashion but these songs are timeless. I wonder if there are any female or male singers around today who could do justice to any of this material. maybe, but I would have to say no.
I've watched almost everything Judy Garland appeared in and listened to hundreds of her songs. I've read her biography by G.Clarke twice. She was an amazingly talented lady but a troubled soul, sadly.
Judy died right before I was born, yet it seems like she still llives! The wonderful thing that happens( as long as people still utter your name and stories and your work plus face is continued to be shown) is you are kept alive even after you've passed!
Judy Garland inspired me to become an actress she was such a beautiful woman and she had so many friends in her generation. i would've loved to meet her in person while she was alive, sometimes I feel her energy while I'm performing on stage and she talks to me in some dreams I'll keep her and Mickey in my heart forever. Love u Judy and Mickey
What’s sad, is that they are blamed for not taking control over their own lives, but they were all emotionally stunted due to the drugs and horrible working conditions. They were a brand. They were nothing more than a product.
@@gromit0299 unfortunately I don't believe things have changed very much! One case in point would be Britney Spears. After her infamous breakdown in 2007 she was deemed mentally incompetent to manage any of her own affairs and is still under that conservatorship, yet is still a puppet money making machine. Disgraceful!!!!
