Prepared for the third training workshop for teachers, the video demonstrates how to create counting programs for the BBC micro:bit using the Insight Mr Bit method of Plain English program scripts. Counting events is a common activity in computer programs and the video explains how the programming process is simplified by the Insight Counter Control module. Starting with an ‘up and down’ counter, we see the result stored in a numerical variable. This is then displayed on the LEDs either as a number or as a simples bar graph. Touching the micro:bit’s logo toggles between the two types of display.
Several variants of the basic counting scheme follow for different applications employing sensors: step counter, rotation counter, shadow counter, clap counter, a 2-bar display, and an X-Y point graph. The final demonstrations show a light meter and sound meter displaying the signals from the micro:bit’s built-in light level sensor and microphone. Every step in creating the programs is explained in detail so that viewers can copy the process and use it with their own micro:bits. After a first viewing, viewers will find it useful to dip-in to parts of the video for particular applications.
