Micro Fire Rolls, Why When And How To Use Them 

Micro Fire Rolls are ideal when you only have a very short top board, when you only have bits and pieces of cotton left to work with, or when you're just not strong enough to apply enough downward pressure to ignite a full size fire roll. I use Micro Fire Rolls with my 8" handheld boards or when I'm top boarding with my Mora Companion, Old Hickory Butcher Knife blade, machete blade, and believe it or not, the scales on my Stanley 10-049 (See LINK below). I watch survival videos and like to practice those skills whenever I get the chance. It blows my mind that I had never heard of this incredible fire starting technique until I found this channel. It's not like so many other methods that take a ton of practice and specific types of materials. I literally watched David do this and went outside, grabbed random pieces of wood and got it to work within a few minutes. Mind blown. I then found other videos where you can use flat rocks and about anything else, as long as you can get a roll going. After seeing David get ignition from green ragweed, I'm going to find out how many different materials I can get to ignite with this method.

Just found your channel. Great video! My favorite fire tool alongside my knife is a Japanese block plane. It's small and light and allows me to make paper thin shavings for kindling out of even wet wood. It can also be used as a top board with your fire rolls and make the bottom board from any piece of dry wood the right size. It is also good for making wedges to baton for splitting logs. Try it!

I experimented with an ultra-micro fireroll and was successful. I removed the cotton from both ends of one Q-Tip, opened those fibers up as much as possible, rolled into a cylinder, flattened it - added a little ash, rolled it and got the tiny ember. It was a fun challenge.

I find your lessons on fire informative and provides useful techniques. Is it possible to make fire rolls ahead of time and storing for future use?

Hello David! I love the videos and they are going to come handy. I am making go pack that will contain a friction board. Is it easier to use a board that is milled such as a 2x4 pine or something else?

Two things I see here have a micro fire roll premade in your cloth char tin. Will a micro fire roll take a spark in a emergency with flint and steel and or a Ferro rod?.

Hello David! Do you think you could make a fire roll from cat tail seeds - cottony floaters from the cat tail head? I was just wondering what other natural unprocessed materials might do well as a fire roll. What if you needed a fire and didn't have any cotton on you? Of course there is bow drilling etc., but what else can be used for fire rolls? If you have already made that video I am sorry that I have missed it, but I have been watching you for years now. Char cloth is so easy to make.

Can you make them ahead of time an keep them dry to use later ?

This is light enough for a backpacker to carry around, or improvise in the wild. How about using cattail fluff or something, instead of cotton, if you don't have it?

Well, this is really cool, but when are you going to need fire, not have a match, lighter, ferro rod, etc., but WILL have boards, cotton balls, and ashes?
