Micro-homesteading in WA with 10K microhome (84 sq ft) in friends' yard

Dee Williams used to live in a 2,000-square-foot, 3-bedroom home. Then she traveled to Guatelama (to help build a schoolhouse) and when she came home her house felt too big so built herself a home that fit. That turned out to be an 84-square-foot foot home on wheels that cost her $10,000: $5000 for the materials (mostly salvaged) and the other half for the solar panels and low-E (low thermals emissivity) windows.
She spent 3 months building her new home in Portland, Oregon, and then hitched it to her truck and parked it in the backyard of her good friends Hugh and Annie in Olympia, Washington. For the first 7 years, she moved in and out (removing the back fence), but for the past two years, her wheels haven't moved.
Annie describes their setup, half-jokingly as a "compound", which also includes a sauna (built by Dee) and until a few months ago, included Hugh's Aunt Rita who lived in "the big house" and Dee helped care for (incidentally, Dee's home is permitted as a caregiver's cottage, though Aunt Rita died this spring so now she's only allowed to "recreate" in her tiny house).
When she moved into her 7x12 foot home back in 2004, Dee got rid of not just a $1000/month mortgage, but most of her stuff. She admits it's not easy to keep things to a minimum- "creep happens"-, but it's a constant process. "I was engaged to be married and I kept the wedding announcement for decades and finally I was like I know that happened I think I can let it go in writing. After a while it's okay to let some of that stuff go and to trust that there are things that you hold inside you that are actually a lot more meaningful.. than the photo or piece of paper."
Today, Dee helps design and build tiny homes for her company PAD (Portland Alternative Dwellings) where they "encourage people to design things that fit their bodies": instead of obsessing over square footage (their designs run from 70 to 136 square feet), "all of a sudden you can let your body be the tape measure".

Reading all the comments just wore me out. So much negativity for what to me is a positive way to live. To me this lovely person is doing what so many wish they could, live a calm and peaceful life without every day trying to figure out how to make ends meet. She can lay her head down at night knowing she built the house that is around her and used re claimed materials that would have other wise gone to the dump. Why are people carping about this? why are these people watching these videos in the first place? They would be better off looking at videos they actually have an interest in.

judy hobday I realize that this is the case of special philosophy (world-view), but it is not a life (very crowded, poor living conditions, ). What is the future for this lady? I'm scared to think about it.

judy hobday Some people are just naturally negative when people aren't living exactly the way they think is normal. This is actually pretty neat, and more power to this lady for making it work for her. She seems happy, and that's all that matters.

wow what a wise perspective on life. As I get rid of stuff I am going to remember about "what do you want to hold in your arms in the end." I am suddenly realizing that that love letter from about 20 years ago has no meaning in my life, the memory does but who cares about the paper it was written on. I really have a lot of great memories that don't need the tangible equivalent. Thank you Dee and Kirsten!!!

***** I guess you have never had a lot of money. You have only thought how it would be. Once people know you have it they come out of the woodwork wanting to borrow it and wanting you to buy them things. Even your own kids. Friends want you to pay off their mortgages, bills, cars etc. Have you ever watch how the loto changed my life. One guy won several million dollars and in a couple years he lost his home and was living in a fifth wheel home back working in the oilfields just to make it. He lost it all. So many people lose it all and become worse off than they were before. One guy was on food stamps totally broke , won the lotto and then a year later was broke again and wanted to get back on food stamps but they turned him down since he couldn't handle his own money he had. Money isn't everything. I have made a lot of money in the past and I had my first wife and second wife and even my own dad rip me off. And they got me for over a quarter million each. I had 4 businesses and was doing well back then.

R You just want to justify the fact that you don't have any money through this comment. You just do your auto therapy. in fact, when i was a child i had no toilets & was concern about food. ***** Sure you are right, I don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. No money at all, broke as a church mouse lol lol. And auto therapy, well don't you think I would have to have money for that? Yea you are a genius. So when you were a child and had no toilets maybe all that shit went to your head. Is that why your nickname is SHIT HEAD lol. And you say you have several bank accounts does that mean you are not smart enough to put them into one bank or are you avoiding paying taxes and hiding your money so your government won't tax you or put you in prison for hiding it from them. Oh and you live by the beach. That tells me you are homeless, No house just living under a bridge or living by the beach so you can shit and piss and wash in the ocean. Yea you got it made. Sounds like you are pretty worthless.

Aging in place. carry your memories in your heart, not in physical objects, create your space for your physical height and dimensions, this woman is not a carpenter and she was able to create this out of her own imagination. How great is that?! Friends taking care of friends! A modern-day commune.I don't like the bathroom at all. I think it could be better...... There are many high-tech composting toilets that are made. I thought she was very mesmerizing. And wow just wow!

I don't have free loaders in the backyard and I certainly have hard pieces of history to pass on to the generations that come after me. Internet Tough Guy Not all of these home use compost toilets. If it was allowed people might use sewerage systems and if it was allowed people would properly use the compost. I have been to a place that uses all their human waste as compost, when done properly it doesn't stink the place out and it quite sanitary.
@internettoughguy
@internettoughguy 9 лет назад
angelstouch92 I don't disagree with you but a person needs to be educated about how to compost properly for it to be sanitary (especially with human feces) and there in lies the problem...the majority of people on this planet are stupid as fuck. Pardon my French.
@ofcv1238

Cities and towns make rules because a $200,000 home really doesn't retain value if you can toss a transient village of campers next door, a mobile home park or a drag racing park. If you spend money on property (developed or otherwise)...you like to have a sense of value preservation. People that DO NOT spend $200,000 should not be able to erode the value by putting 25 miniature homes in a backyard of neighbor (not impugning the subject video or circumstance). It is pure economics and NOTHING to do about taking money or denying opportunities for others. If you buy a gallon of gas you should expect that it will NOT ruin your car; if you spend any money on something you value you should be able to expect someone else can't take that value away...ya know like drying fish next door in back yard, raising goats, outdoor nudist parties, etc.

I would love to live in a tiny house some day. I think I was made for tiny house living. I also really love the way this woman views life and how she said she didn't make the house because of these certain convictions, but developed the convictions as a product of living small. I think the first time I realized that stuff didn't matter so much was when my family and I drove past a house in our community that had been burned down. I started thinking about what I'd take with me if my house ever burned or what I'd go back for. I realized besides my family and our pet (if we had one at the time) that there wasn't anyTHING in my house that I'd ever risk my life for. That was a very important moment in truly realizing where we as humans should place value in our lives.

May have been my mistake to title it homesteading, but I think in the modern world (unlike for my great (x 6 or 7) grandparents who homesteaded a plot of land in NH.. of course, I have video of it), it can- at times- be less about simply growing your own food & more about economic self-sufficiency, frugal living, building your own home, etc. Though I know there's a bit of creative license involved with this title. Beyond semantics, I love what Dee can say about life in a sentence or two.

Or you just study and get a job you love and can't get enough of. Even if your plan becomes reality, you'd still need money and therefore a job. You'll need to pay property tax or lot fees as well as municipal taxes. You'll need money for the occasional repairs and maintenance. It's unlikely that you'd be able to grow all the food you need for a healthy diet, so you'd still need to buy some food. Surely there would be some other unforeseeable expenses, let alone all the money it's gonna take to bring this plan to life. Maybe you should consider becoming a farmer...

arthurthegreat Plenty of people can make their living off of selling extra food crops. To me, what Jesse Williams was saying is that she wants to escape from the system more than anything. I wish to do the same thing! Even if it means working at a shitty job until I've got enough money to buy land. Unfortunately, there is no where we can go to be free of it completely, but making your love and lifestyle profitable is key.

arthurthegreat Depending on your view of life, that may not be possible. For me, 40 hours of ANYTHING is too much, no matter how much I love it. There are just so many other things I want to do. Also, you may lack the talent for the things would love to do. You can try to be a painter but if you can't get what's in your head onto the canvas AND aren't able to make money with it on top of that - doesn't really matter that you'd love it.

I have a quilt my great grandmother made for me when I would young. That may be it for me. I have a house, it is about 1100 ft. sq. on the Oregon coast, but because I care for my mother in her house in a different part of Oregon as she struggles with Alzheimer it will be a while before I come back. Reading and watching all the tiny house videos has made me much more aware of how little a person needs in their lives to be truly happy.

I will second that. My income is less than $10k a year, I managed to save about $600 dollars ( have it in coinage ), gave away about $5,500 of that income. and have lived on the rest. 860 square foot house, paid for, have the title deed in hand, only pay taxes and insurance and utilies, which are low.

I second spending less. I was trying to downsize. Then i decided its easier not to buy. So nowadays i only spent $200 on personal food and bills. Whenever i have a choice, I eat more nuts and bananas rather than products from abused animals. I saved 60 percent of my salary and give away another 30 percent of my salary. I dont count transport as a personal expenditure but a contra against the salary as i find it necessary job expenditure to keep the job. I like her water system. Very simple and efficient. Extreme frugality gives financial independence that removes most stress in life. And it makes organising so much easier.

amazing little house. I am working to build up to something like this. I have turned the back of my truck into a mini house under a camper shell. You work with what you have. I always hear the same thing from people "You should have used this instead, you should have gotten a van, a trailer a this a that." I work two jobs, sometimes you just don't have the money to run out and buy the "Best" of the "Best" but what we have works well for us, even if you don't like it. It's fine, you aren't living in it!. I love these video's and the idea's I get, Thank you for sharing.

Nice workmanship, beautiful wood interior. However, a used travel trailer will cost less than 10K and give you more square footage, a range and fridge, multiple beds, electricity and running water with a toilet and shower.

You are completely lost in the regular society then. I am going to redo my tiny tiny house and make it just a tiny house. Minimal living, 99.9999% of people can not understand this. Every person is a hoarder, is what society has made "acceptable", that makes them normal. Why live in RV? They are not a tiny house, RVs degrade as do tiny houses, but its a house! 30+ years maintenance free, plus heating and cooling only what you need. If you think RV vs tiny house, you are missing the whole picture

Not only custom to our current living situation, but also it makes one not accumulate any further junk! You are free to come and go, and technically it can be left anywhere if you wish to take off on a world wide trip. I would find this more difficult to live this way with children. I have 2 heelers, and well they get their exercise daily. My friend has a friend in the military who they built one custom, and have 2 children. They spent way more than most, at $50K to have it built, but well after his time in service, they will be able to have purchased any house anywhere with the money in BAH that they have saved! Its a completely different life, and everyone wants to have that home built for them. I just think it is built on what you have available or what minimal things you need. For me, I will have running water and a toilet. If lived in an area for outhouse, that would be fine as well, but there are modern comforts that can be given up such as a bathtub, and 99.9% of space in a regular house that isn't used but 1% of its lifetime.

to build your own home to fit your life of recycled materials seems to be much more important than buying something like a travel trailer as one person suggests. There is heart and love and knowledge of your own time and efforts. It surprises me that more people watch and listen to these videos and just don't get it.

Nice little house. It looks great.Only problem with something like this is that in nearly every jurisdiction in the US, this would be illegal to live in due to residential zoning restrictions and in some areas, just building something this size even for storage would require approval and permits and is many times denied for no apparent reason. Our governments including the cities and townships have become money hungry and refuse to allow what they would consider tax squatters. They insist on collecting property taxes from each and every dwelling and zoned property. Regular aerial photography is how they enforce these codes these days. Try to put a shed up, they know!I surely hope you never run into this issue.

@joseg7908
@joseg7908 8 лет назад
+Lainlein they have laws in most of the us so your home looks like other homes to make the city look "beatifull" and "organized".but if a tiny home could be set up on wheels like a trailer,you could get around some laws.

What a beautiful lady. It took me 5 years mostly by myself, to build my daughter an A frame, 2,500 sq ft, 4 br, 1,100 sq ft of sundecks. giant functional fireplace, sunken pond with waterfall in the livingroom. Hickory floors, Hot tub, Lots of granite, stone, and cedar. (you get the picture) 3 ponds in front, and 600 foot of creek in the back. She moved away, and now I sleep by the creek with my wolf (Madison) under a piece of blue walmart tarp.

A beautiful video...thanks for the upload. I did venture into the comments...wow, big mistake! It always stuns me how people are so insulted by others lifestyle choices. I saw a couple of wonderful people living a life that they are working hard at...

Love her outlook on life... and death. Gave me something to think about. She seems like she'd be a blast to hang out with. Those raggin on her about being a 'freeloader': her friends WANTED her to live there before she even asked. We should all be so lucky to have a community of friends and family who take care of each other and share our lives with each other. Those who want your 3000 sft mcmansions, every device known to man, huge tvs.. have at it. I'd take a small house in a commune surrounded by friends any day. In fact, that's probably where I'm headed in the next 10-15 years. I'm gonna have to insist on a fridge tho. lol

She is living like this because of city planning board municipal zoning codes and building codes. Her home is viewed as an RV. It is much cheaper to buy and live in an RV in the correct climate. Most codes go like this for RV living: no more than 21 consecutive days living in an RV and no more than 45 days per calendar year living in an RV.

we're building a tiny house, final cost estimate will be around 10-12k. on a 24ft rv frame. it has everything a house has and far more cabinets, etc., than others we've seen, almost finally ready for flooring to go in, can't wait. of course we live in a state where they don't restrict you on such stuff too.

I used to live in a 40' trailer and loved it. Now I live in our dream home of 4800 sq ft. I went from compact and simple to giant with still not enough room. I can not for the life of me figure out how to down size. I have lots of tools that are there for all my projects that I keep dreaming up. I keep telling my son that one day this is all going to be yours and I think inside he is probably rolling his eyes. Keep living your dream.

I love this concept but add say toilet, bath tub ,LED lighting, 5 star+ rating little fridge and some form of air-conditioning. I mention the former as in areas like Australia, desert states , heat is a big killer. More solar panels , small wind turbines or even semi-underground(the building) regulates the temperature in both seasons. Really its the way to go. Ask ppl looking for homes, newly weds, young professionals about how unrealistic it is trying to own a house during these economic times? You don't have to go to her extreme but something you are comfortable with? I would love something like this but with more comfort. Even with kids, plan ahead or even simply build additional space.

RedThebigOne In my younger days (1970-90) I had an old '61 GMC school bus. I bought it for $100, put a battery in it and with not much fiddling, drove it 45 miles to my place. A guy who lived nearby and knew what I was doing came the next morning and gave me $200 for the motor, a Chevy 348, and transmission. I was off to a good start! I built the inside as I needed it starting with a double bed and closets in the back. From there forward I had a long counter on one side that had a 3 burner propane stove with oven and a 6 cu ft propane/electric fridge with a very cold small freezer. A sink and 3 feet of open counter space. Overhead were cupboards. Beside that was a custom made airtight wood stove with room for a whole days worth of wood. On the other side of the bus was a big comfortable armchair, table and lamp and next to that was a small table for 2 or 3. Where the drivers seat was I put a shower. It has a propane furnace but don't need it, even at -20F. The ceiling lights I converted to LED a few yrs ago and have a few others around the bus. I had 12V marine lights before. All electrical is 12V. I buried a cable and hose from my neighbor's basement for power and water. A friend made me a small hot water heater that took hours to heat but had enough hot water for a not too quick shower. There was an old outhouse on the property. That was good for me. I learned that you tend to do things very quickly when it's freezing outside. I had a 'watering' post on the far side of my one seater. I don't know how mant sq ft in that bus but it was and is, plenty big enough for 2 people. I can't use it anymore but my nephews do. My property is on a navigable river in Central Ontario, great for boating swimming and fishing. This video reminded me of how easy it is get along without several hundred or more sq ft of space that you don't really need. I wouldn't have gone 20 yrs without running water though. BTW, I paid the neighbor $25/month for water and power. My property taxes were $37/month back then.
