>makes a video about going fast and doesn't talk about sonic GET OWNED NERDS!!!!!!! oh yeah, and check out War Thunder!!! Use my link for a free large bonus back with boosters, vehicles, and more: playwt.link/circletoonshd
A big thing I want to mention about Ghostrunner that makes it so perfect No fucking loading screens mid-level Every time you die. Press a button. Restart at the checkpoint. No loading, no bullshit, you just GO. It’s SO goddamn smooth and I wish more games were capable of this kind of flow
Exactly. There's 0 downtime, the punishment is the lost of at most a minute or two on some of the more complex combat encounters. This is why fromsoft games didn't (and to some extent still don't) appeal to me, because dying not just loses you resources but also often a lot of time to backtrack just to die again and again.
Fun fact: there's actually a Neon White mod that has community medals that are faster than the secret red medals and are sometimes updated when a new skip is found to keep it interesting
@@sandymangamin7159Unfortunate you didn't find out organically, I just had a level I really liked and was playing through cutting the time, then boom red medal. I didn't know they existed until then, and I literally did not look at a single level the same again. I've further optimized like a full second out of that level (it's like a 7 second level) and it remains as the coolest moment from the game, realizing the level I just spent 30 minutes optimizing was the starting point of the journey.
I think the king of micro-speedrunning is Trackmania as its sole purpose is getting the fastest time on incredibly short tracks and it’s been around far longer than anything featured in this video.
I love the idea of a therapist finding out you cant pay at the end of the session, so they undo your progress by destroying your self worth and psychologically damaging you.
2 FREE tiny games that encourage speedrunning. Werecleaner, a very fun and cute game about a werewolf janitor trying to clean the office while not being seen. If you get seen, well, thats another mess to clean. Deeper Sword, the meme stabbing a dragon who size shames your sword platformer.
@@mrblakeboy1420It's a bot, I'm 99% sure. Sometimes they'll reply with something like "no I'm not" when someone calls the account out directly, but outside of that, it's spamming comments with that same message, but changes the name to whatever channel they're on.
I'm glad you showed a quick snippet of Katana Zero, but I think it's understated how good that game is at this. It doesn't achieve it by placing you against other players with times (there is a time trial mode that does), but because it shows you a replay at full speed + without showing your time slow, it makes you feel like a literal god and dammit if I don't want to see my little replay beat the level as fast as humanly possible
1:28 Raindeer ai is such a pain in speedruns of rain world. I always end up getting bad luck and having to waste 3 minutes before getting the deer to come over.
I'm probably on the fence about speedruns: on one hand - speed runs are incredible to watch and extremely helpful to getting around games. On the other hand, I prefer playing all games at my own pace and savor the world, story and characters
That's the neat part: often you can play both styles. Take celeste: your first playthrough will probably be like 20-40 hours, because you will take your time, see the story, think about the platforming, find secrets But then you played every single level, and ask yourself "what if I just tried to play first level again?", and that level that you've spent an hour at first, you will get through in like 5 minutes. Then you try the second level... And you're hooked It's kind of amazing how there is literally two games: one for slow and enjoyable playthrough, and one for speedruning; all in one package
Most people speed run games after they beat it regularly the first time. Do you really think it’s feasible to casually speed run a game while going in blind?
You might be thinking of the more popularized speedrunning that Circle mentioned early in the video, where player speedruns a game that wasn't designed for it. But in the later parts of the video he talks about games that are designed around individual level runs, that may or may not have more self paced story and other elements in between speeding through those individual levels. Key difference being, a game designed for individual level speedrunning usually doesn't try to tell a story or introduce characters while your're going fast. They do it in between when you're not being timed. That way you can get both an entertaining story and fast gameplay in a way that meshes well.
While you can do both I definitely prefer to do the slow one every time. I just like to indulge in the world. I like games where I can forget who I even am until I stop playing.
CYBER HOOK MENTIONED?! UNBELIEVABLY BASED, CIRCLE I've been waiting for so long to see this game get more recognition, it goes so hard (we don't talk about the last level)
i love neon white! i genuinely think its one of the best games to get into speedrunning. bronze- ace are really good for casuals and then you got red aces that get you into the real stuff then you got community medals that really get you in :) and everything in the game is pretty basic so the more you play the more your core skills improve and the easier it is to get the higher medals. its just such a great game too! (it was my first speedrun game and now ive played a couple and found myself in a great nw community!)
I appreciate that this video actually explained why people like speed running. I never realized that people were actually getting dopamine from being faster that their past attempts. Whenever I attempted it, even if I got faster I would just think about all of the parts I messed up so there was never a reward for me.
Onw of my personal favorite speedrun games is a tiny little indie called Furi, its a boss ruch game with some of the most interesting and engaging fights I've played since Cuphead or Dark Souls. It's also like 4 hours long on your first playthrough so its really easy to grind out runs, especially wiht its built-in speedrun mode that skips all the dialogue and cutscenesm 100% percent recommend of you're looking for a quick little speedrun game
I'm so glad you talked about Neon White. The game is genuinely some of the best fun I've ever had with a game, and the music is done by my favourite band on the planet
as someone who got a little too into speedrunning ultrakill, thank you for not over-glorifying its speedrunning-ness, of course it's a main thought of the devs, i mean, the level ranks with millisecond timers make that pretty obvious, but there's barely anything hidden behind "going fast", it's a lot more just "look online to see if i'm faster than the others". ultrakill is mainly focused on making you feel unstoppable in a VERY stylised environment, the speedrunning just comes naturally with the amount of tech hakita lets you do
The grapple didn't really feel right to me in Cyber Hook, I found Verlet Swing to be a much better grapple speedrunning game. Edit: It's also 80% off on Steam atm.
One of my favorite games to watch speed ran is an older title called Mirror’s Edge. It’s a fast paced FPP, first person parkour, game that just looks amazing when played flawlessly. I have never picked up the game myself, I am trash at got-to-go quick games, but it’s a titles that I’ll continuously go back and watch speed runners play on RU-vid.
If you love this type of game, then you should check out - Warstride Challenges Doom eternal but even faster - SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell Pure platformer with tiny puzzle levels - Hot Lava Mirror's Edge but the floor is lava
I used to play time trials in Mirrors Edge on the Xbox360 and pass the controller to my friends or brother and all these games seem like great ways to get that nostalgia
Marble Skies also falls under this type of game and I highly recommend it if you are a fellow marble fan who likes going fast, insane tricks, and funky bounce physics.
The fact that HIGH HELL released in October of 2017 & did all of these things but BETTER and wasnt mentioned at all in this list makes me very very sad
"Oh I'm timed and there's a leaderboard? Eh, who cares I get nothing for doing better and none of this will matter in like a month lol" I will truly never understand speedrunners.
*Short answer* Less about recognition from others and more on self accomplishment. The ability to look at oneself and say "I did this and I am proud of it" *Long Answer* For everyone what they deem as proud work is different for everyone. Myself personally I am a situational completionist. I am glad when I go through every sidequest in a game, and unlock every achievement, except when that achievement requires me to experience the whole game for a second time, when I'd rather just move on, or doing something that will give me stress. Like beating hollowknight on the permadeath mode. I would rather do anything else.
If you like first person speedrun shooters, I highly suggest checking out Anger Foot and Mullet Mad Jack. Both were released this year and are highly addicting.
There's an indie game that's in development that fits this video called Karlson. It's made by a RU-vidr named DaniDev, and while his channel has been inactive for over two years, he's still working on the game
For any soul that has already played all of the mentioned games within this video I offer you a game by the name of Warstride Challenges. It is an insanely complex First Person Doom Style Micro-Speedrunner and if you are still unquenched after beating all its premade content you can try and the totally fair/balanced/tested community built levels.
Crumble is one of the best games ever with an amazing physics system and very simple controls. Ik u showed Katana Zero very breifly but its def worth a mention as ghostrunner is esentially a 3D version of it. Titanfall 2 is also worth mentioning just cause its so good 🔥
Mirrors Edge is an older game that has my heart in this genre it is from before EA was know for cash grabbing and has a really good plot that is skippable yet worth it, it is almost seemless and is what got me into these games really and still is my favorite
Game to try: Anger Foot. It’s like hotline Miami but guess another FPK with gunplay as well. The better you do the more shoes you unlock that give you special abilities like doors exploding when you kick them in.
PLEASE play wizard of legend!!!! -perfect micro-speedrunning game -somehow also the BEST element/bending game we have right now, so if you loved avatar you'll adore this game -if you like HADES, you WILL love it -dopamine rush WITHOUT the lows of screwing up (the bosses encourage you to keep trying! When they knock you out, they give you motivational puns. It plays more like a big festival than a death match, at least based on the dialogue.) -don't want to spoil this part, but there's a very optimistic realization at the ending (positivity enjoyers will like this one) -PERFECT. GAMEPLAY. Sheer power and speed, and the animations are fast and flashy to really communicate the impact to the player. TL;DR: please play wizard of legend! You won't regret it! I'm so down to be the free advertising, I love this game.
As the dev behind Hoverflow (inspired by Neon White and CS surfing) I can only agree, I live and sweat for speedrunning games hahaha, amazing video ! I'll add that those OST played a huge part for me, the Ghostrunner OST is simply incredible
This is exactly why I racked up so many hundreds of hours in the original Mirrors Edge and grinded out the sequel as soon as it dropped to get top 1% or even a top 10 run in the global leaderboards
Great video, glad to know I have some games I could give a chance sometime. Neon Whites probably what I'd play first. Okay now the rest of the comments unrelated but I didnt want to waste the topic: reading the title of this video before clicking had me thinking about how even if your not a speedrunner, theres plenty of games with easy speedrun tricks that just become "You do it cuz." My own personal example is I am one of maybe 5 or 6 people who would say they enjoy Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and I've learned dialouge skips, actual map skips, abused the hell out of grenade jumps, and has also abused a fair amount of bugs that solely benefit you. I still cant explain clearly what it is about the game that makes it fun to just fly through, but its honestly a lot of fun. I am commiting sacrilege by saying I've played and mastered this more than I have 2.
ho-ly thank you for blessing us with another long (for being animated) essay video, Circle, I honestly appreciate them cause I've been subbed to you for forever now and your comedic timing and expressions are just chef's kiss all that on top of you making many other things with other creators too, make sure to not get that darn burnout the youth keeps talking about on the topic of the video: cool! I only ever heard of those games but didn't ever hear from someone who was into them what the hell is was all about
I saw ultrakill in the compilation at the start, but speedrunning a level to the point of breaking it in that game is so satisfying and shockingly easy.
My favorite parts of ghost runner, Celeste, super meat boy; all these types of game is when late into the game you hit a hard level that you breeze through first try and realize you’ve mastered a skill you would not or possibly COULD not have done before
Aw man I was hoping for an Ultrakill section (but then I remembered that Ultrakill is more about style than going fast so it makes sense you only mentioned it in passing)
1. I loved the video, very informative, funny, and had really good pacing.... Almost like it was a satisfying run in a speedrun lmao 2. Warstrider Challenges is also another really neat micro speed running game that i feel is under appreciated!
Honestly I've been wanting to make my own speedrunner esque game based off Neon White and Ultrakill with a sort of gimmick where you shift into an alternate reality that has a different layout in the same stage with themes for areas being opposite to each other based on a topic (ex. one area would be a hot desert while its alternate would be a cold tundra to express opposing themes in temperature).
You NEED to play Deepest Sword. It is a very short game where the faster you go the more levels you unlock. There are also achievements for getting it under a certain time. It’s also free.
"Smash stuff" levels in Sunset Overdrive is the only game I've played so far like this. I loved them. I got into the top 1000 on all of them, and the top 100 on a couple.
