Microdiscectomy Recovery: 10 weeks post op

This has been a much slower rate of progression than I originally anticipated. I’m not sure how much longer it will take me to get back to the activity level I was before my injury. It’s been 9 months since the first trauma on my disc, and 10 weeks since surgery. I really wish I knew when I would be back to full capability with my sports and physical activities. I have been pretty positive and upbeat throughout this recovery period, but today it hit me just how weak my core is. I hope if you are experiencing the same things you find comfort in knowing that there are still difficult days for someone who has had a relatively flawless recovery.

I'm 3 weeks post surgery and crying my eyes out to this video of yours in particular. Knowing deep down I have probably reherniated due to a anxiety outburst. Thank-you for sharing

Hope you're back to running! I'm 3 weeks into recovery and still experiencing burning and aching. I started to get really depressed knowing the recovery is going to be a grind, I used to run marathons and like you it was my stress and anxiety relief.

9 weeks post op here and tears watching this video in the fact that I haven't run in over 3 months. Haven't seen your updates beyond this but hoping they are positive!

I came out of surgery In London UK for a microdiscectomy on Monday 21 January. I have been watching your videos and you do inspire me. I feel pretty bad at the moment. I think recovery takes a lot longer than the surgeons and most people say. One thing I would say is that I did not get and was not offered any Physio at all. It was available but the very respected surgeon said it was not necessary for someone like me. She said walk a lot and look on line. Having had physio in the past I am not convinced they can do or show me anything that I cannot do or learn myself. I am just impressed you can drive and shop and wash since that seems a long way off at my 3 day mark.

Michael H you will get there. I recommend training or finding a trainer to help you strengthen your core. I’m 9 months out now and having back problems because I didn’t do enough physical therapy. I have a new prescription for PT and I’m working really hard just to get basic strength back. My goal is to be active again with hiking and snowboarding and I need a lot of work. I would get a second opinion because I e not met a single other person who was told they didn’t need PT. Good luck to you!

@MeganT Thank you for sharing your story and I hope that you are doing well! I am curious about your journey related to yoga now that 5 years has passed. I just had my surgery this week and am hoping to get back to yoga asap. Thx!

I have the same back injury and am deciding on whether on not to get the surgery. Thanks for making these videos. It is helpful to know what surgery and recovery is like.

Riley Watts thank you for watching! Please don’t take this video as how the whole recovery has been! My other videos show that I’ve had a very amazing and easy recovery. I am more than glad I had this surgery, I only wish I’d had it sooner! Good luck friend, and happy healing no matter what decision you make.

Did it take away just sciatica pain or also the back pain?
@bdawg8907

Seems that 80-90% of people are pretty much pain free once they wake up from the procedure. I, like you, have not been so lucky. I had to wait 5 months to get my microdiscectomy on Nov 19,2021. Was pain free for the first day or two post op… only to realize that was simply the drugs administered for the procedure leaving my body. Then the next two weeks was horrific, similar pain to when I first herniated the disc and had the complete burning sensation down to my toes. Luckily the 4 weeks after that showed noticeable improvement…waking up every day I could feel small differences particularly in my foot. Then at the 7 week mark, I had my first post op physio session… my physiotherapist said I had no restrictions at all after 6 weeks post op…. So I didn’t go crazy but I did start doing some additional stretching and increased walking and other exercises…. That was last week… by Monday of this week I was ready to go back to the emergency room since I had unbearable pain in my hip and butt. I have my 8 week follow up with my surgeon next week, so I decided to take it easy this week and just went back to the basic post op stretches and some casual walking. Just a few days of taking it easy again and I’m feeling better. Everyone recovers at different rates, not to mention no two people will have the exact same herniation so we can’t all expect to be back up and doing what we love at the same pace.

I am a Nana . No Sciatica pain. But I still have quite a lot of back pain. I will never be young and there a lot of things that I will never do again. But compared to before it is wonderful . I can interact and have fun with my grandbabies. I'm thankful for that. Try to think of the things that you will be able to do. You are young and I'm sure that you will recover so much. Linda

Thanks for sharing. I'm about 9 weeks post op and have some lingering sciatic pain do feel a bit nervous about the long term. The fact you're doing a bit more now gives me some hope that the recovery is much slower than I hope but hopefully will improve more over time. Mine was compressed for about 7 months before having surgery so I'm hoping that's also a reason! Anyway, all the best and thanks again for sharing!

@bluehawka how are you doing now? I am 10 weeks post op and still having lingering sciatic pain that hasn’t been getting better. I wouldn’t say it’s nearly as bad as pre surgery but still concerning. Would love to hear about your recovery!
@bluehawka

@amityaari1046 I'm about 3 years post op. It has never fully recovered to where there's no discomfort. I wouldn't call it pain but even good days I'd say it's a 1/10 but could ho to perhaps 4/10 if I do something I shouldn't or overdo something. I would still do the operation again as pre surgery I was eating and working on my stomach on the floor so it's definitely better. Best of luck

I’m 5.5 weeks and don’t have a clue where I should be recovery wise. It’s an absolute roller coaster. At around 4 weeks the sciatica came back, however it’s calmed down massively over the past week. Feel like I might be getting slowly better, trying to do everything in my power to recover

Hi, Thank you for sharing! I hope you’re doing much better. I’m on week 2 going on week 3 and it has been tough. I fell into a bit of a depression as well, but I hope you’re hanging in there or have overcome that! How are you feeling now? I’m not sure what to expect in the weeks to come or how I’ll be at the 6month mark but would love some feedback!

I'm 10 months in of back pain. I found out I have a disc buldge at L5 s1 I've tried physical therapy, chiropractor, decompression exercises, deep tissue massages, medicine, etc nothing helps. I'm scheduled tuesday night for a steroid injection. My doc said if it helps with the pain surgery will help the pain go away. I have back pain on my left side when I sit not when I walk or stand I have no leg pain (Sciatica). Has your pain went all the way away after surgery?

How did you reherniate? Did you do too much too soon? Did you get surgery again for the 2nd reherniation? I have an L5-S1 8-9mm herniation. How bad was yours? They are recommending a discectomy as well. I’m 28 have had 1 back injection and going to PT but I have pretty bad numbness but what is worse is burning foot pain. Did you ever suffer from burning foot pain?
@megant3530
@megant3530 4 года назад
Tatiana Yepez I ended up reherniating 8 months later by snowboarding again. In this specific video we never knew for sure if I did, but we assumed I did. I bent over 2 days after surgery...and you aren’t supposed to bend. The symptoms just got better and it became no big deal at that time. But then 8 months later I really did a full reherniation on my snowboard because I wasn’t strong enough yet.

I understand how you feel, i use move 68K ( 30lbs luggage at a time) pounds a day sometimes on knees in the belly of the plane. I been out of work since June 2018, had surgery 10/18 as of today 3/01/2019 I still lift more than 10lbs nor do squats. Doctor said I herniated the same disc but doesnt want to surgery. I will be getting a SCS Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted in my spine to block the nerve pain. We all have our journey, we just need to take one step at a time.

So many young people in USA rushing for surgery make them self worse This is cuz they have this health insurance and they go and doing surgery maybe unnecessary I got bulge disc in many level for 20 years when I I’ve surgeon are not will to operate unless it real real severe I’m 67 still no surgery that because I don’t have private insurance rely on govt hospital where they operate for free with Medicare. And those surgeon not do back surgery very easy they said I will be worse or there’s are risks involve etc but now my pain get worse I need to insisting.

@@freestylebully4849 I hope you feel better soon. It took about 1 year from surgery and at that point about 90% of the pain is gone. If I do a lot of lifting or something I should not have like twisting I will get some tingling in my leg where I used to have severe pain. The tingling goes away within a day or two. Overall I am much better since surgery. Prior to surgery my pain was horrific. Pain meds did nothing and I would lay on the floor in pain.

@@freestylebully4849 One suggestion, if you have surgery, please have it done by a neurosurgeon and not an orthopedic surgeon. I am not knocking orthopedics, but when dealing with your spine, do with a neurosurgeon, they have specific training for the spine / nerves that an orthopedic does not have.

Franc Favata this did happen. I am now almost 5 months out from surgery and I have not had any “zingers” in about 3 weeks! I’ve started running on the elliptical 3X per week at the red center and I’m going to work my way into yoga soon! Good luck and happy healing!

good to hear Megan, for the past 3 weeks have you had any sciatic nerve pain or discomfort ?
@megant3530
@megant3530 5 лет назад
Franc Favata I haven’t had any sciatic pain or discomfort since the moment I woke up from surgery in the hospital. I “re-herniated” on day 9, but I took steroids and only had symptoms for a few days. I am 100% living without nerve pain. My back is stiff in the morning, but I make sure to walk my dog first thing and do some stretches and I’m good the rest of the day. The more I move the looser I feel each day.

Interestingly I never find positive outcome after surgery. All the people who went through surgery they never got better if this is true that I don't know why bother with surgery. I'm reading all comments and not one reporting enthusiasm or big relief after surgery. That's is so sad.
@deeveeuhs
@deeveeuhs 5 лет назад
Did you try more conservative approaches before considering surgery? I’ve lived with horrible back pain from L3-S1 herniation for several years now and I can’t continue to live like this. I have good and bad months and I just can’t see how I can live the rest of my life with this instability and maintain my sanity. I hope you’re doing great and remember that there is comfort in the masses.
@megant3530

Alexander Torres I tried acupuncture, physical therapy, and manual hand therapy. Nothing worked-I couldn’t sleep for months. And I couldn’t even stand up straight. It wasn’t just leg pain-it was debilitating. I run my own business, I am an interior designer and I work for myself. Part of my job is getting on ladders to measure, carrying samples, etc. I couldn’t risk waiting any longer and it had been 6 months when I went for surgery. It was such a miracle for me that if I could go back in time I would have done it from the get go. If this ever happens again, I wouldn’t even hesitate to go again for surgery I truly believe in it that much. This coming from a girl who fears doctors and tries mostly homeopathic remedies for literally everything else. I say, you only live once-don’t live in pain! I wish you the best in whatever you decide!
