MicroLED could be the next big thing in TV technology, if manufacturing hurdles can be overcome. It seems to have all the advantages of OLED, which almost none of the disadvantages. The only one being that it is extremely expensive right now. It has perfect black levels, accurate colors, and is even brighter. Plus, MicroLED likely has the same low latency capabilities as OLED. The fact that MicroLED does not have the same burn-in and degradation issues as OLED means it could be much better suited for computer monitors as well.

OLED tv's can FOR SURE get permanent burn-in :( I bought my mom LG OLED55B7A on August 21/ 2017. She watches the same news channel 24/7 (CP24). It has a lot of static images. Around Nov 1st I noticed that the weather icons were slightly cloudy and some of the text was a bit blurry but I didn't think to much about it. During christmas she wanted to play the "fireplace channel" for family but once she changed the channel you could still see all the outlines from the news channel. We left it on the fireplace channel from christmas until new years but there was zero difference with the burn-in. She still uses it but can now only use it for her news channel. The weather icons are so cloudy they are difficult to see and some of the ticker text is hard to read too.

Thanks for talking with us about MLED. I had no idea it was already here so long ago, and it's just now starting to make it's grand entrance onto the public stage. Ever since CRT, we've not had a truly decent replacement for the viewing angle, and brightness / contrast of CRT. We'll never see PC monitors in OLED format due to burn in, and colour fade, unfortunately, but MLED may well be our go-to format for PCs, once the R&D costs are taken care of, and the mainstream can get their hands on it. I do recall seeing a 32" 720p TV for 10 grand, back in the early 00s, Now that same tech can be had for a few hundred bucks. LOL

Blue OLEDs have a ~15 000 hour lifespan. That's why the colour of the display shifts over time until it is too attrocious to fix with colour balance adjustments (read lowering the brightness of red and green to match the lost brightness of blue) and it's time to junk the display. A few percent difference in brightness is *easily* visible against a plain background. So after 1000 hours or so of consistently showing UI elements or a task bar you'll have some visible burn in. The blue colour not only degrades quickly, it also has poor colour quality compared to good LCD displays (e.g. QD backlighting).

Since I don't play games I could not care less about refresh rates. However power consumption is a a huge deal especially on laptops and phones. And after testing new products in the TV section of UL for over 15 years, I am convinced that just like LED TV displays, this tech will drop in price like a rock once it becomes mainstream.

Great, I bought the 7 series SUHD of 2016, so in 2-3 years when my TV is due for an update, this MicroLED would be sold for reasonable prices. Bought an OLED in 2016, tried it for 2 weeks and returned it, the Samsung's brightness and colors seemed more attractive and that deep black is a big pile of BS, you don't really notice it, unless you pay super attention to the issue...

not sure why the hate on oled as a monitor, ive been using a sony a1e 65 inch screen as a dedicated monitor pretty much since they released it and i dont have burn in at all, sometimes a little retention that goes away in a few mins. but this worry of burn in on a higher end oled doesnt seem as much as an issue as being said. hell before this i was using an lg c6 oled and no issues there either. its honestly really hard for me to go back to traditional screens now that ive used an oled for so long as a monitor, the color and look is amazing as a desktop screen that i feel its worth getting one especially as some monitors are pushing 1500 bucks these days, thats an entry 55 inch lg oled there.

A lot of supposes and maybe. In fact OLED beats any LED no matter the design, detail, contrast etc. The Sony Briva 9 is a superb LED TV but it cannot touch Sony OLEDs in real-world Movie watching in a normal lite room. LED can be better in very bright rooms in daytime use. Burn-in of OLED TVs I have never seen and I have owned several. You have to abuse it so I guess then you could. The only bright level for LED is when you go to vivid modes which of course is the worst picture you could select for viewing, in night time TV watching in a normally lighted room OLED rooms are not even close.
@achillesmjb
@achillesmjb 6 лет назад
Does MicroLED have the wide angle field of view that the old plasma and new OLED tv's have? I have a Samsung UHD 60" tv. Great picture directly in front but fades in color and contrast severely when sitting off to the side.
@carlosoliveira-rc2xt
@carlosoliveira-rc2xt 6 лет назад
Mike B Stop sitting off to the side.
@achillesmjb
@achillesmjb 6 лет назад
Someone has to sit to the side if lets say four people are watching. Again, how is the view from the side? Does it have a narrow or a wide viewing angle like OLED or Plasma TV's.
@carlosoliveira-rc2xt
@carlosoliveira-rc2xt 6 лет назад
Well, I guess if you sit four feet from the set. Everyone of my friends watch TV at a 15 foot distance or more on large sets so sitting off angle where it would affect picture quality would mean you're in the neighbour's home.
@achillesmjb
@achillesmjb 6 лет назад
You clearly do not want to answer a simple question so the only conclusion I could draw from this is that this was sponsored by Samsung and the viewing angle is limited unlike OLED or Plasma tv's.

The question is: if this technology is from the year 2000, than why did all companys still invested in OLED instead of MLED ?
@whatsascrewdriver5572
@whatsascrewdriver5572 6 лет назад
I believe the video said the manufacturing process is yet unable to match the pixel density of our present desktop monitors. That's why MLED can provide an HD picture, but they're 100 foot diagonal (which has a few display applications), until the new manufacturing processes are worked out to shrink down the technology to consumer-size.

Four years later, where has this gone with respect to laptop screens and monitors? What is the energy usage scenario? More or less electricity consumed vs OLED vs backlit LED (IPS)? I cannot seem to a consistent answer when asking retailers about whether I will get longer or shorter battery life between charges that have OLED screens.
@PizzlesTechTime

The difference between burn in and image retention is something you might to educate on. Image retention is the main problem with OLED now in days. While burn in does not happen as much any more. Image retention will dissipate but burn in does not. Also did you see the rollable OLED! They are not just Square!

Thiojoe, where is the plasma tv option in the poll!?!?
@Clairvoyant81
@Clairvoyant81 6 лет назад
Well... I see one potential issue, which might also be the reason why Samsung showed that tech with a huge screen: Miniaturization / pixel density. It might well be an issue to get that display tech small enough to build a 4K TV with "only" 65 inch, for example... not to mention high-res displays for mobile phones, which have a lot higher pixel density than a large TV or even a typical computer monitor. As for the 1700Hz monitors: You will never get a system fast enough to fuel that. However, a high refresh rate display could well be used to improve motion clarity, for example.

@user-ch5ij5yd2g
@user-ch5ij5yd2g 6 лет назад
burn in does not go away if you turn off the screen for a long time, it is physical degradation of the pixels. the only way to "reverse" it is to degrade the surrounding pixels hence create a more even image at the expense of an overall more degraded panel with the blue pixels being the most degraded

They are sure taking their sweet time. I honestly expected this to be mainstream by about 2005 since blue LEDs had already been around for ages before then and CRT trinitrons were already pure flat, high res and were cable of 240Hz back in the late 90s. LED to me was the logical next step after CRT. But nooo, fucking LCDs bro!

Considering the work Samsung has done to make OLED as popular as it is, thanks to the Galaxy S line, (I know quite a few people who think of Samsung when they hear OLED, and don't even realise there are other manufacturers of displays of OLED displays.) It is a surprise Samsung didn't continue to make OLED TV's. Maybe MicroLED's will be the true alternative for Samsung. At the moment Samsung are selling the advantage of OLED displays to consumers with their phones but it's benefiting their competitors more as they don't have a footing in that market.

Who Cares The Q Samsung is using in QLED denotes the implementation of quantum dots to enhance the performance of the BLU. So, yes, it stands for something, and, fun fact, after MicroLED, "true" QLED will be the next leap, which uses self-emmissive quantum dots, rather than a film to enhance the backlight unit. This is usually denoted as EL-QLED or QD-LED.

I have a LG E6 OLED flagship model for past 2 years and I have multiple serious screen burn in issues which are very very visible. These OLED tvs are very fragile / delicate and it is extremely difficult and maintain these super expensive screens. MY ADVISE GO FOR A NON OLED TV. Features like Panel Noise Clear and Pixel shift are gimmicks and there is nothing you can do once you get single or multiple screen burns. Getting a new screen from LG is as good as the cost of buying a new OLED TV. Now since I cant throw away this super expensive oled TV, I primarily use it strictly for watching NETFLIX / Amazon Prime extra or movies that I play through download or blue ray players. For all other regular channel on DTH especially News channels and entertainment channels like Sony, CNN or BBC etc which have bright logos I prefer watching them on my Samsung TV which unlike OLED does not have screen burn issues since it is Backlit LED technology. Trust this review will help readers in making a suitable decision in buying a new TV. If you own a OLED make Double sure on regular basis that all your main picture settings like Brightness Contrast Colour OLED Light etc. are in mid range which is in between 45 - 55 range, anything higher will triple your chances of getting a screen burn which is irreversible damage. (Especially if you are in Quarantine due to Corona Virus and spending hours at a stretch watching your favourite programs on your OLED TV. Stay home and be safe...

Hmmm...Why would they name it QLED? MicroLED doesn't actually have any Quantum Dot tech in it- so that really wouldn't make any sense. I think Quantum Dot still has a place in the market, as it gives you much more efficient LCD Displays. There will also be more improved versions of QD based on the way it's implemented. Just my two cents.

Galium Nitride is not exactly a new material. Makers of phased array military radar have been using it since the 1970s. If you dug into a chip in an early supercomputer, like a Cray from the early '80s, it had chips made from GN. It can be used the same way silicon is used, except it's better. For one thing, you can pump more power / current / voltage through it. Downside, it's a far more rare & expensive material than good old silicon. Galium Nitride has a been a wonder material for supercomputers and radar and space missions and electronic intelligence gathering for years. I also think it's a teeny bit toxic....

Easily the future of small displays such as computer monitors and smart phones, oled is still perfectly fine for tvs, save yourself money and buy oled for home entertainment, and microled for smaller form factor uses that'll really benefit

So since the micro LEDs are smaller does that mean that smaller screens would benefit better with 4K 8K and so on because of their higher pixel/led density.

Nice! But I'm not interested in tv tech that cost $2,000-$5,000+...that amount of $ is a down payment on a CAR, transportation, TV's should be less than $2,000.

Neat technology, but largely a solution in search of a problem. As with multichannel sources, we are still limited by the source material. Does one Really need infinite resolution playback to watch ads for Dependz undergarments? And even if one has some exotic source material, does it demand anyone run out and replace an otherwise fine functional source? Hell no. The only significance for this is that When, and If, the price of said technology comes down in price to be equivalent to the current commodity pricing, you buy one when the current monitor craps out. Nothing more.

It won't matter for monitors and TVs but it will matter for HMDs, which is why HMDs will take over the world in terms of displays. Eye tracking and foveated rendering allows you to do 8000x8000 pixels per eye with the same ease as you'd render a game at 1440p on a regular monitor; the resolution of the eye is really only excellent very close to the fovea, so only there do you need to render in full resolution. For fine, high contrast lines you could see up to make 16000x16000 pixels but it's diminishing returns at that point. Once you have such an HMD, you can do virtual displays at whatever resolution and aspect ratio you need. You can do animated movies effectively as machinema and not need obscene resolution in the source material. You can do VR games if so inclined (essentially all cockpit based games are far better in VR; so things like racing, rally, space sims, flight sims).

Qled is not proprietary to Samsung it is actually a type of filter technology that uses Quantum dots Hisense has Qled TVs as well

OLED burn in is of course permanent and unfixable. It's a degradation of the (paritcularly the blue) diode with use that causes blue subpixels that have been continously lit to be permanently weaker than those who have not been continously lit. It's why OLEDs are not used for monitors. This same phenomenon causes colour drift (think of it as whole-screen burn in). Phones do not live long enough to be seriously affected; VR doesn't have any static objects or HUD elements; TVs rarely display a static image and when they do it's a channel number or something up in the corner where burn in isn't so annoying.

One has to wonder when the capabilities of the monitor/display will out power our eyes' ability to see without this annoying thing called motion blur...
@SubinGeorge26
@SubinGeorge26 6 лет назад
Do you not know that a certain calculated amt of motion blur can actually make your viewing experience more realistic? That's why many games give you the option to turn on motion blur.
@soylentgreenb
@soylentgreenb 6 лет назад
Motion blur, lens flares, chromatic abheration and other such nonsense is the first thing I turn off in any game. It is never helpful, because the screen does not know where my eyes are looking. When my eyes follow a moving object on screen it should be perfect and blur free because it is not moving on my retina (everything else is); motion blur assumes my eyes are stationary with respect to the direction the camera is facing (both in movies and in games); if something is moving fast, that assumption is almost always wrong.

The thing with QLED (true QLED, not the samsung marketing boys) is actually potentially even better than mLED or OLED. A true quantum dot, self emissive display is theoretically possible, and could have brightness as high as 40,000 nits. If anything, they are hurting the reputation of a true QLED display, by calling an LCD display QLED.

Burn in on old is VERY PERMANENT!!! I bought a used Galaxy S5 and the previous owner must have been a preteen girl because the Facebook task bar is always on the top of the screen. I open FB maybe once a day but the previous owner must have had it open all day.
