Recently i bought a used Ammco 2250, kind an older micrometer. I don’t understand the ratchet mechanism, it doesn’t make noise or clicks when we turn. Its ratchet comes with a little spring. My question is, the ratchet doesn’t make click like the one that we see now a day. So how to know if the appropriate tension was set?

Hi First the spindle should turn freely, if the spindle adjustment nut is too tight the ratchet won't work. Go by feel how tight is it on the part your measuring, if you can get a nice slide fit on the part you should be able to measure to within 0.0005".

I have that tightness problem. Any cure?

I bought an old Moore and wright micrometer this last weekend with the stiff problem. I noticed that when assembling it things got stiff before the threads had engaged so it was the shaft in its sleeve that was causing the problem. I mounted the shaft on my lathe spun it up and polished the shaft with some 800 grit followed by 1500 grit emery paper. Smooth as butter now. I also disassembled every part and left them in evaporust overnight

Have a stuck barrel, how do unstick it

Hi If you have a collet set you could try put some paper around the barrel and hold it in a collet to prevent damage. This should give you more leverage but making sure the micrometer lock is off.
