Having done 4 conversions now I feel I can say that if you take your time and be careful they can look great and be as safe as anything else out there for a fraction of the cost. Regulation will just push the price up beyond what the likes of me can afford, that'll be a sad day for the industry, but most of all the planet.

The big problem with electric bikes here in Oregon is that it rains for many months out of the year. Here in Veneta, the weather is terrible, and for elderly people such as myself, getting soaking wet is not much fun. Also, we live 10 miles outside of Eugene, and there is no bike way, just a narrow shoulder, which makes riding into town extremely dangerous. if I could buy an electric vehicle or bicycle, that was fully enclosed, and safe to drive near the highway, then I would seriously consider building or buying one.

Johnnny I really appreciate your advice, I was your first Canadian order. I will be booking a session with you to chat about issues I have had with some bike conversions. I am have done 4 now, and issues I have run into are bottom bracket not large enough to be able to slip in the bbs02b. I have had a problem trying to get the sensors to fit and work Shimano hydraulic brakes. Tektro hydraulic brakes are relatively easy. Chain stays that are too wide, big pain in the butt, I can add a spacer but then chain alignment is bad, plus you run out of room on the threads of the non-chain side. I plan on building an E-moto at some point, so I am waiting for some good advice on that front. The latest bike I am converting is a Trek Marlin 6 Gen2. I did have to drill out the BB but everything else seems like it will be a cake walk. Keep up the good work, you are amazing!

It's my opinion that micromobility is a segment of market that is so new that almost everything you see is well overpriced when compared to what you get for your money. I seen a video of the Outrider Coyote 4WD vehicle on RU-vid. It's a great product and I would love to own one, however when I went to the website to check the price, I was blown away by the $15,985 base price. I find that pricing is the problem with most micromobility vehicles on sale today. Companies are just asking for too much money to purchase it.

quick question, i have a ebike that’s limited to 20mph i did some research found the controller but it’s integrated into the battery mounting mechanism on the bottom tube in my research j realized that another bike had the same display as mine and had more options when i tried accessing the options on my bike it wouldn’t let me switch from one option in my research it shows that it’s locked from factory by display my ebike is a ancheer hummer 10a i upgraded prettymuch every single part on the bike brakes shocks handlebars etc what display do you recommend to remove that factory lock and get this bike to its top performance?
@thankmelater1254
@thankmelater1254 8 месяцев назад
It's probably at it's top performance anyway. On my bike I can choose the applicable wheel size on the display, which will fool the electronics as to speed limit of the bike, but it does virtually nothing because the motor with that power delivery is already just about maxxed out at 32 km/hr. anyhow.

@michaelbrinks8089
@michaelbrinks8089 8 месяцев назад
I think most people aren't going to switch to EV if it's still more expensive + less convenient. Plus yeah, we would need dratstic infrastructure change. Like charging stations everywhere & more powerplants. If everyone bought an EV tomorrow, the grid would be overloaded. . I think solid state batteries will be the game changer. If they can figure out a way to mass produce them at affordable prices.....I really wanted an ebike but can't afford $900 for a decent kit. But could afford $200 for a motorized bicycle kit. That has more pros than cons of an ebike. If I had the money though I'd build build a hybrid 🚲.

Good summary, thoughts on the haters of DIY builds: from my knowledge many of the batteries fires are from bad (false brand) cells or plugging their battery into either 1) the wrong voltage charger 2) leaving it sitting in the charger 3) bypassing their BMS 4) not getting a pack made by someone who understands to build batteries. bummer to hear people want bikes to be a registered and forced insurance, defeats the purpose of "micro-mobility" but money talks with lobbying and lawmaking sadly. Also not sure how thorough UL Certs really go. Good call on making DIYs attractive and not have a gang of wires. would love to see services offered like cable management or resizing of wiring.
@michealbackus4543
@michealbackus4543 8 месяцев назад
You forgot about putting them in near airtight metal frame boxes, so they can explode rather then just catch on fire. The hailong pack battery is the only UL and CE certified ebike battery on the market. The cases are made using a low melting point polymer, so that a thermal runaway will simply burn through the case, rather than propagating to a detonation.

Is anyone talking about standardized batteries and standardized connectors for fast charging of ebikes, emotorcycles and similar vehicles? Just went for a ride on my ebike and was thinking what a pain in the butt it is that I can't stop somewhere and charge up my bike easily. The charger that came with the bike is (I assume) proprietary and it's the size of a brick so I never move it from the garage. So that means my travels on my ebike are limited to the range I can get on one charge, which is very limiting. If I could stop somewhere and grab a snack and top off the battery, it would make riding the ebike sooo much more flexible. Carmakers have convinced us that supposedly a quick recharge is more important than the total range of their EVs, but ebike makers haven't read that memo because it takes hours to recharge my bike and can only be done with (i assume) proprietary hardware.

@Hazdazos
@Hazdazos 8 месяцев назад
@michealbackus4543 that's an interesting solution that might work for you, but I'm talking about not needing to carry a charger on the bike at all. Have that be built into either the bike or the battery, and having something similar to NACS/Tesla connector (or maybe just a regular 120V plug) on every bike so at most all you need to carry is a compact short cord. He have USB for computers and electronic devices. We (soon) will have a unified charging standard for EV cars in the form of NACS. We need something similar for smaller vehicles. Few people are talking about what's it's like to really live with ebikes and similar vehicles. The real day-to-day stuff like charging and dealing with weather and cars on the same roads, and scummy thieves. So many of these companies are pretending like we live in some kind of bicycle utopia and not taking into account the reality that most places (at least in the US), just aren't cut out for ebikes and trying to solve those problems.

What, no "Maybe we will deliver, maybe not" Sondors there? And I hate to admit it but they have a point about regulation/insurance/etc. We don't need more "Louis Rossman's bike on fire" videos and "pedestrian killed by insanely fast ebike" news stories. Still hoping Arcimoto will FINALLY release a fully-enclosed version of the FUV. Throw in a little electric heat pump for heating/cooling and it would be perfectly usable year-round in at least 45 of the 50 states. We need a mall, decent-looking and affordable EV.
@michaelbrinks8089
@michaelbrinks8089 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, I think Arcimoto almost got it right. I think if I could build what I have envisioned in my head. I could sell them a make a profit- aerodynamic lightweight removable weather enclosure on a 3wheel (articulating front end) Piaggio mp3 or Yamaha Tricity scooter with removable storage compartments, tandem 2 seated. Basically like the Monoracer fully enclosed motorcycle but use 3 wheels so you can ride in rain snow.

Batteries and safety, yes. Cost is always an issue, but when you say "safety" you are implying cheap is crap. Cost I believe is mostly labor and it hard to beat China's labor costs. Would be interesting to see how many battery fires are from batteries used on imports sold by large reputable labels like Rad.
@JohnnyNerdOut
@JohnnyNerdOut 6 месяцев назад
I wouldn’t say cheap is always crap but if you looked at a graph of price vs fires you would see a clump of dots near the less expensive batteries. Expensive batteries can also catch fire so nothing is completely safe. It’s how well they are assembled. More time is needed to properly assemble and that costs money

I think they have a right to be concerned. There are far too many high performance ebike builds riding around unlicensed, uninsured, and at high speeds on public roadways. All my ebike builds are designed to pass emoto or e-motorcycle inspection required for registration: VIN, Title, Legally spaced turn signals, License plate brackets, Ad nauseam.. As far as trackers go, unless the ebike has more than a $3000 value, the cops will just shrug you off, as the amount of time and paperwork required for a judge approved property search warrant is tremendous. There is always the option of retrieving the ebike yourself: Good luck with that, and be sure to wear your bulletproof armor..😳 A good insurance policy that fully covers theft of an ebike, is the only valid tool you have at your disposal.
@michaelbrinks8089

Funny how cops are so quick so give law abiding citizens ticket$ for petty issues. But then ignore that same person and not help them when a criminal steals their $2500 ebike.

Coming Live, from Copyrighted Music Land. I'm for safer batteries but at the same time, if they MUST be UL certified that would drive the price up tremendously, probably beyond the point of affordability for many. That is the day ebikes die; when the most basic ebike costs thousands and thousands of dollars just because the batteries got regulated into oblivion. And why should ebike batteries be singled out as UL cert required, when 18650s have been around since the 1990's. As far as people judging the DIY "franken" bikes by appearance - you can't control the opinions of others, or make everyone happy, there will always be some guy getting flustered about how your bike looks or how you set it up. I would say make your ebike look as good as possible, and as safe as possible, but at the same time, can't control what other people think and its a waste of energy trying to please everyone. Most dangerous part of the DIY ebikes to me, is adequate torque arms for hub motors. I see ppl puttig on 5000w hub motors with dinky 10$ torque arms and I'm like 😬 And also, those Unit Pack Power batteries, after a few years they start to get crazy hot, I think if people aren't paying attention those things are like a slow-release electrical fire waiting to happen. You should set up a booth at the expo and put on a presentation for those "industry leaders".

Then regulate the garbage that is sold in the US. Their against DIY because it cuts into their profit we’re in a bs NANNY world. Laws are already set in place for wattages etc. also the battery topic figure out different way than lithium. Because I know I’m fairly heavy into radio control cars and our batteries are a lot of the causes. Sorry this makes me angry and the people with power have a yellow sticky note and pen and crap on us. Again worried about batteries quit the sell of junk batteries. Ah thanks dude your one of us 😂. Not to mention where is the convention held at? Ps quit the sale of cigarettes cuz they be burning houses down too🤣.
