Here is MY microneedling facial protocol!
You have to use YOUR judgement and do your own research to determine if at home microneedling is for you. Some people MUST see a Dr/pro before they embark on needling. This is your skin, take precautions!
General Guide (YOU should determine what is best for you!!)
Forehead: .25-.5 Thin skin/.5-.75 thick skin
Between eyebrows: .25-.5 thin skin/.5-1.0 thick skin
Nose: .25-.5
Eye area: .25-.5
Cheek bone: .5 thin skin/ .5-1.0 thick skin
lower cheek and chin: .5-1.0
Upper lip: .25 thin skin/ .25-.75 thick skin
Facial scarring (I recommend a professional. They will likely do depths of 1-2mm and anything past 1.25 is not for at home in my opinion)
Stretch marks are also better in a professional setting where they will do depths of 1.5-2mm
Surgical and burn scars must see a pro also especially since there may be better tools to treat these conditions.
Who shouldn't needle or should see a pro first regardless?
If you have melasma be very careful! It is a tricky skin condition that can both be helped from needling and also flair from needling! Talking to a derm and getting on a pigment inhibitor would be helpful when needling with melasma.
If you have a history of hay fever or asthma or food allergies, see a doctor first. If you have diabetes, thyroid conditions, active acne, pustule rosacea, UTIs, or immune diseases see a doctor. I am in no way telling you to needle without proper precautions and that includes talking to a doctor first. When in doubt, talk to a dr/pro.

I have a scar on my chin that's under the skin .. I injured it in a car wreck .. my chin hit the steering wheel.. it ripped the fascia? Where the chin attaches to the skull .. it's now sorta a bump .. is it ok to use the pen on this ?

So I finally did it!! I got a Pen and tonight was my first session. I watched this video 3 times and made very detailed step by step notes. Spent much time disinfecting my area, got all my items and started down my list of steps. As I was going I was so prouder myself for handling the pain, why it wasn’t painful at all!! In fact, even following Penn’s recommendations for depth I was barely getting red! So after my face I did my neck, then my chest, then my hands. When all done and cleaning up I thought “Oh, I better throw out the used cartridge”. ........ I NEVER PUT ONE IN........🤣😂🤣. Oh my, maybe I should rethink this, hahaha!!!! I’ll try again tomorrow night...🤞

Penny, thank you for sharing the extra information about numbing. It is so important that people know it can be unsafe if too much is used and then is in the bloodstream from the area or amount covered or from using an occlusive on a large area. Thank you. I don't numb at all because of that and also because I have strong reactions to numbing - heart racing, shakiness and I don't like it. But, the forehead is usually the area that hurts the most for me. I did my neck with 0.5 recently and it didn't hurt at all surprisingly. Thank you so much for your helpful videos!

Did my first session today with M5 pen-16 needles, HA you recomended(it's running out quickly). Did 1.5mm on deep indentation scaring. It hurts with 1.5mm depth even with numbing cream but I was able to finish it. Keep posting your great videos. One day hope to get treatments done by you when I'm in portland

Hi Penny :) I am about to do microneedling at home for first time and your videos are really really helpful. After watching every video of yours I feel ready for the treatment so thank you for that. I am a tattoo artist and I am dealing with cross contamination on a daily basis so wiping with alcohol your gloves every time before touching the pen is a lot of work (at least for me is unnecessary exercise). It's maybe not the best to touch your face with alcohol cleaned gloves too because the alcohol goes on your face :) I would like to advice you to get some clip cord covers for tattooing and cover your pen with it. You could even wrap it with grip wrap tape on top of the cover to prevent any slipperiness. That way it will be protected and all you do is remove the cover after :) I know I would definitely do it that way

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to make these videos, and share your knowledge and experience. After first getting the procedure done in the Drs. office twice, a great deal of studying, which your videos have been a large part of, and speaking to my doctor about the pitfalls to watch out for, of doing so, I gained the confidence to start microneedling myself, with the M8. I've been very happy with both the results and the cost savings of doing it myself but there are two (possible) issues I'd really appreciate your feedback on: 1. Speed. Unlike the medical devices which us a piston-based engine that physically pulls the needles all the way out before plunging them back in, consumer devices use a spring action for the retraction stroke. Not willing to stake my face on a tiny little spring (or have it made into steak, by one) this has kept me from ever setting the speed higher than 3, and of course always using a new cartridge with a new spring, in an effort to avoid tearing my skin from starting a down stroke before the needles have finished their prior up stroke. Can you address this a little, as it relates to the speed setting, with your knowledge and experience? 2. Gurgling. After just a few seconds of use, the cartridge starts to gurgle profusely as it stamps through the hyaluronic acid serum I apply, and reapply as necessary, to maintain slip. The amount and frequency of application is very consistent with your own in this video. I don't notice this happening when I've had it done in the doctor's office, or in your videos. Other than making the cartridge itself look like a prop from a horror movie as any small amount of pinpoint blood seems to collect in between the pins with the serum, this doesn't seem to be causing an issue with effectiveness or performance from what I can see. I'm making my own hyaluronic acid serum with hyaluronic acid greater than 1 million daltons molecular weight and at a potency of 1.5%. At this potency it's thick enough that it doesn't immediately just drip right off my face yet isn't as thick as what I would normally make for a normal application. Have you heard of this happening? Do you see any possible problems with it? Should I make the serum thinner? Thanks again, for all your efforts.

I've been doing facial microneedling about 4 months now, once every 4 weeks, it works great, in my career I sweat a lot and I also had some mild acne scars, these treatments work wonders. I used to just use retinol and other high end serums but it didn't effect the look so much, my face was very smooth to the touch. It wasn't till I started microneedling. And I do it myself at home with the Dr. Pen! So you men out there, we can also have great smooth textured skin

After I bought it I read the reviews and some said there's didn't work, that it just vibrated but not actually was going in and out but mine works just fine. Mine is red and white and labeled as Dr. Pen Ultima N2 Electric Microneedling Derma System. I had paid $70 plus tax on Amazon but it's now on sale for $50.

I want to thank you for posting this video. I just started microneedling. I started first doing it with a nano cartridge to get the feel of my tool. I then went up to 12 pins today. I used a Dr. Pen Ultimate A6. It wasn’t bad at all. I set my pen at .5 and a high speed. I did use a numbing cream. The worst part was around my lips and just above my brows. The worst though was just a stinging sensation. I am anxious to see how it does after a few months. Thank you again for sharing.

Yay, thanks for the video. It made me brave enough to try this on my own. I just did my first session face and neck with the M8. I have the numbing cream but chose not to use it my first time around as I'm more wary of the litocain than I am of the feeling of the needling. It wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't terrible either. A few places on the face were hotter than others, but in general, not a problem. I'm excited to see how this helps the skin on my neck as that is my biggest issue at 49. I appreciate you making this so accessible, as all good intentions aside, making time to go to a clinic for it, just doesn't happen.

I'm soooo new to microneedling. I've done a lot of research on PubMed about microneedling and "percutaneous collagen induction" and completely convinced about its safety and efficacy in skin rejuvenation, especially for skin types at risk for PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) such as my own. I am so happy I found your channel. You explanations are very thorough. At age 47 I feel there is hope for me with my fine lines, wrinkles and large pores. On the other hand, My son is 15 and he finished his 6 month treatment of Accutane 6 months ago. He has a lot of scaring and holes from where the cysts where. I have had micro-needling done by a dermatologist and is was very expensive. The dermatologists recommended to do this for my son to help with scaring. But he is afraid to do it. I figured I would get this system for myself and try it on him.

I’m a new medi aesthetician here!! I just got my microneedling certificate today! I’ve been binging on your microneedling series and I have to say I AM SO GLAD I FOUND YOU!!!! 😫😫😫 to be honest I kind of felt that I was left with unanswered questions or unheard information. My workshop was for one day and the instructor was really rushing through everything I felt really lost at times (since I personally process things slowly). I’m really learning a lot more from you then I did at school. I really do appreciate you mentioning your little hacks to keep things sanitary and easy, will definitely take notes 📝. Can you please do a demonstration on a model? (Your method**) that would be helpful!. Also since I live in Canada I heard that they will be banning Dermapens that have no shielded cartridges (due to concerns with tearing skin when needles are bended or because it’s exposed and it’s risks to cross contamination). I was personally trained with the InnoPen. Could you also do a review on it too? In comparative with Dr. Pen? that would be great!!! 👍🏼 otherwise love your videos, you’re a lovely aesthetician 💛 keep it up!

Your videos are getting me through this stay home order! I had medical microneedling for the first time one month ago. I had a histamine type reaction to either the procedure or the products used (swelling and severe redness for over a week, even tho taking benedryl). That said, I'm setting a lot of skin tightening and firmer skin now! I'm glad I found your videos to try this at home, using just HA and not going as deep as the esthetician did (she did 1mm on almost my entire face). Loving the gran active retinoid from the Ordinary, as I just get too flakey from tretinoin. Thank you!

I've had Intensif RF and I have done several microneedling sessions to help with scars and syringoma on my ocular bone. They definitely have made a huge difference in the appearance of my syringoma. When I’m going to be washing my hair, I like to massage into my hairline to help get that more taut look. Can you needle into the hairline? What brilliant advice, concentrating on the upper sides, l never thought of the collagen helping with lift. However l can, hand on heart say that since doing micro needling, my skin looks and feels so much healthier and it literally rescued me especially since l turn 63 this year. So HUGE rescue! I only wish I discovered micro needling in my 20s. 🌹

I watched another video of hers, where she's needling at home and says because she's doing it at home, she doesn't need the gloves. She used alcohol on her face, and she numbed it up, no gloves though. I also don't recall that she kept using alcohol on her hands. Confusing...

When I did my medical needling protocol I actually do talk about having alcohol on hand to avoid cross contamination. I have done videos on cosmetic needling and nano “needling” and I don’t use alcohol during those procedures. I’m extremely careful with sanitation. But I’ve worn gloves and not worn gloves-either way I just make sure to not touch things then the face if at all possible and to dip in alcohol if I do. Hope that clears it up.

But let me know if you’re still confused. Clean hands on my own face is no different than gloved hands….still have to prevent cross contamination. It’s just preference. In office? Always wear gloves.

I joke all the time that if you look in my ear, you'll see a rusty 'No Vacancy" sign hanging in my brain....lol...it's too darned full of all the worthless stuff I remember....ha. I actually did watch your nano needling yesterday, good timing since I purchased some right before that! I needled last night for the first time, using the Dr Pen a6 Ultima. I honestly was scared to death, trying to remember everything. I used alcohol, no gloves. No numbing. I used to use a dermaroller, but a doctor told me I was tearing my skin, bad girl, I was! So I tossed it. This was about 3 years ago, never heard of you, wish I had. The instructions with it were a lot different than what you say....wish I'd known!Anyway, again, don't be alarmed at my confusion. I'm usually in a constant state of confusion about something. 🥴 I'm not 30 anymore, or 40, or 50.....💜

So I did it tonight without a numbing cream. I have a high tolerance to pain so maybe my experience won't count but honestly I thought the pain would be worst. It was more of a discomfort. I felt pain around my lips and nose but it was it. Thank you Penny❤️

Love your channel, and I am highly impressed with your in-depth knowledge and communication skills; you’re a consummate professional! 😉 Here’s my long-winded history: For my 50th birthday, I had a series of in-office IPL sessions with luminous results. Unfortunately, I didn’t follow up with maintenance; I moved to another state, and these at-home devices were unavailable then. Oh, the joy of technology! Fast forward. I’m now 64 and recently purchased a LED (red-blue-green light) device with bio wave, microcurrent, and massage functionality, and after a month, I love, love, love the results! While it’s not a magic wand, the dark spots have almost completely faded from my face and hands, and that glowy luminosity is returning. YAY! Now it’s time to spearhead those deeper, niggly lines. After loads of research, including your channel, I am now considering at-home microneedling. I can answer that. She has another video for cosmetic microneedling where the higher number of pins don't penatrate as deeply but make more superficial micro holes and then she puts on a protocol of serums right afterward because they can actually get IN the skin. But for this video/procedure you'd use the one with the fewer pins.

Another fantastic video! I am curious about a couple of things. Is it not ok to use a growth factor right after medical needling? Also can you review the difference in use of products after cosmetic vs medical depth needling. (I thought using actives after cosmetic (provided are safe as per Dr Lance are actually encouraged - but I know protocols can change) Finally do the newer Dr Pen models (A6 & 7) also offer the shorter 1/3/5/7 pin needle cartridges also? BTW I am using CBD oil the day after medical needling & it is really the BOMB for bringing down inflammation! (I use it most days generally too!)

It was so good to rewatch this for a refresher. I have been really bad with my MMN practice, and it's been probably nearly 2 months since I last did it. I don't use numbing cream (although I have some), I just buck it up--and it really isn't bad at all. But the sneezing response, oy vey!

Confused about the difference between medical, cosmetic & nano micro needling. Medical is 4-6 weeks apart, but cosmetic is every week. What's the difference? Have you ever done this without numbing at all? :)) It can be quite the experience! I don't numb. So, I start out at 0.5 and do the whole face. Thank you for the tip on being sure to do the parameter - I will keep this in mind and pay extra attention to that. Then, I go back and will do certain key areas a bit deeper or just a bit more - lines around eyes, forehead and around the mouth. I try to do the 0.5 to adjust to the pain before going deeper. I noticed sometimes the pain isn't that bad and other times it really really hurts.

I was whimpering while microneedling my neck at 1.0. I was basically holding back a scream it was so painful. I have the Derminator, though which I have heard needles with more force (heard that from youtuber who has both Dr Pen and Derminator).

Hello. I very recently came across your channel and am very grateful for all the information you provided regarding the Dr. Pen varieties. I do have a request... could you make a video for us guys who are interested in using a dermapen for hair restoration? How to use the pen on the scalp (speed, depth, up & down vs drag the pen on the skin), what kind of aftercare should be done (any products to use, how long after the derm session, etc), all of course to maximize results and not do any negative harm in the process, and just touch on how long of usage until results could be expected. There are quite a few RU-vidr's (Hairliciously is a big one) who have videos about dermarolling/dermapens for hair loss, but they are just your average joe's who tried it aimlessly at home. Your knowledge and experience would bring a lot of clarity to this. Thanks!
