At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, it's all about power and control. I took the necessary steps and created a local account, because I refuse to log in to Microsoft on my own computer.
In this day and age NO company gets my trust by default. In fact, going in to anything now I automatically assume the worst until they have proven themselves worthy. NO trust will ever be given just on faith or words alone. Get it through your head Microsoft!
I would rather have a Local Account because I don't have to worry about not getting into my PC/going online because something goes wrong with my MS Account login. I just don't use MS services that require me to login to an MS Account.
One has to ask themselves what the reason is Microsoft is so bent on everyone being joined at the hip with them? There are only two reasons Microsoft exists. Money and power. We users are their cattle herd. Microsoft is a perfect example of companies with no competition.
The first thing i do when i get to the desktop on fresh install is disable telemetry services, registery edits, and disable task scheduling. Microsoft give the option to turn it off in settings so we dont have a resort to these workarounds.
No Recall was ill conceived. The repetitive recording and storage usage are reason enough to oppose it. Too much bloat already in Windows. I think users would be just as opposed with or without a ms acct. The only reason for a ms account I can think of might be onedrive.
Honestly I don't care about using a Microsoft account since it gives me benefits but Microsoft shoving this into everyone's face that is using a local account is very stupid
I don't want to be Microsoft's thin client. I want my resources to be local. I despise the EULA in order to use the computer I purchased. Hello interesting Linux distribution!
They hate it because they cannot spy on you and steal your user data if you don't log in and they can go kick rocks because im not going to, and I also debloated windows and removed the junk and blocked their remaining analytics crap as well as removing the TPM requirement and the memory requirement. hence why I only use Windows for certain games that refuse to run on Linux and im using Linux as primary OS.
I use Windows to run Kodi media server to a tv screen, which is setup to auto-run then nav with a game controller. So my use case does not use a keyboard, so login would be a pain.
Yet nobody says a word about apple not giving you even a hidden buried in menus and settings option, it will not work unless yuou sign in or create an account. login combined with telemetry you have to manually go in and turn of, some edit registry etc, it's not anonymous if you are loggedin especially these days when most services require you to verify your identity
I have a local account because my Microsoft account password is 15+ characters long and I can't remember it. That's why I use a password manager. Since I have a Hotmail account, One Drive, and M365, I don't want to dumb down my password to something I can remember just to login. I don't mind logging in to use an app. I do that now on occasion.
Since they have zero competition. They have choke hold on OS space and they cans do what ever they want. No other companies to keep them honest. Imo ms should be sued for being too controlling and bullied out all other OS companies out of business.
I use a Microsoft account, For me it's all about sync. But I agree simplify installation let me choose whether I use BitLocker, Recall or a local account. I paid for Windows let me use it how I want.
I run a bunch of endpoints and ...dont need MS. Its just too easy to host your own local cloud and do the same thing as MS between the endpoints without have MS storing all your data and then later you find out there was a data breach...no way , dont sign in....take it one more step and block all MS traffic at the router or switch level....
If M$$$ dropped the two hundred sixty dollars US cost for the win license and if they would purchase my hardware, they can do whatever they want with it. But they want to be paid two hundred sixty bucks, so that they can show you advertising and constantly do shit in the background. Did someone drop them on their heads recently??
privacy, automatically opted in tracking of everything down to keystrokes, all that "anoymous" diagnostic and activity data is now linked to you. Even if microsoft is completely trustworthy it is a risk that smart users can take advantage and steal everything they have stored on you for malicious purposes. Safest option, don't put it out there to begin with
