I can't believe we are getting close to the 10-year mark because I remember 2014 like it was yesterday, but I'm glad that you were able to weather the storm from this.
1/29/2018 - It's been over 3 years since Microsoft laid me off and my family and I are doing much better. The RU-vid career took off and branched out into a live streaming career on Twitch and between all you awesome supporters and the platforms that have been generous letting me upload and share my content I'm able to provide for my family. That being said this year (2018) I'm going to kick things up so I can not only get by with my family but actually have some money to put away for our future. I just wanted to thank every single person that watched this video and all the amazing people that understood my situation and sympathized with me for the support, it really did make things much easier over the last few years and continues to make my future brighter. Oh, and to the few haters that felt it necessary to kick someone while they were down. I just hope that you also found something good in your life to help kill off that negativity that only makes you feel good when you're boot is on someone else throat. I hold no ill will or feelings towards you for trolling me because i realize you were probably dealing with something similar and hopefully you overcome what is holding you back and move forward in a positive way. Good for you, Angela! I always tell people, the best thing that can happen to an IT professional is a layoff. It happened to me and I have moved on to bigger and better things. Like the old saying goes, "when one door closes, another one opens".
Laid off by Chase bank, a job that took all the fun out of IT. Looking back they did me a favor. I started a business providing IT for small businesses and I have never been happier. I have exceeded the salary I had before, I work much less hours and from home, and I take as many vacations as I want because 95% of the work can be done from anywhere.

***** I got an email back which was surprising... and kinda had me worry because I thought that meant support via that route wasn't as frequent as I'd hoped. He said he wasn't going to make anything he did exclusive, and I think if he started a Patreon it wouldn't serve a very different purpose. I contract as a 3d artist at Microsoft for about 10 years when I lived in Seattle, commuting across that 520 bridge everyday. I worked on the flight sim team, the forza team, The crimson sky's team, and the project G team, went on 3 8hr interviews over the years and never got hired. But they kept calling back to work on projects. It was so confusing. I finally started turning down contract jobs there and went to work full time for Sony.

He'd been here for about 5yrs and was able to get his wife here etc. Just as he goes and buys a house in Dallas and is settling in he gets the pink slip. Turns out they sent his job to, you guessed it, INDIA! He was learning how to drive CDL Trucks. He still a driver, but he's working inside sales at an Oil Company in Odessa, TX.

Worked at Microsoft before and it sucked. I quit after being burnt out from working over time all the time. The senior manager was an assh*le. Too many vendors from India competing for projects and a lot of politics. I'm glad I quit and would never go back unless they make me the CEO. People bragging about working for Microsoft, Google , Apple etc are dumb and brain washed. Corporations don't care about people, they only care about the bottom line. Don't be loyal to companies because they give a damn about their employees. Work where you get paid well and enjoy working. Don't work for a brand. Always look for better opportunities and jump ships when they pay you better. You have to look out for yourself. Good luck.
Take this guy's advice with a grain of salt. Evaluate your own situation and envision yourself at any future potential employer. For example, I work at one of the big ones currently. I turned down an offer a year ago that paid 20% more, because I saw 60-hour work weeks, a dimly lit cubicle, and my peers all being 40+ (I'm 28) in my future if I accepted. One year later, I feel I made the right choice.
Your son is going to look back on this one day and be able to say, without the slightest tidbit of reservation, that his pops was a good dude. Then they tried to say that I was always late and almost never showed up for my shift. They are liars about that but I don't really care. Not my problem anymore and it will never go on my resume.

GET THIS SHIT "From this point on you are not allowed in the building" like...wtf it's not like i perhaps started a fight with someone and i was considered a security risk or something i literally did nothing and , if they would have said "Martin, we have decided to let you go" at least i could understand that but i wasn't even told i was being let go so.. i asked "why, what did i do wrong" and the agency simply said "we are not at liberty to disclose that information" and i'm like WTF what do you mean, YOU ARE LETTING ME GO, because of a decision that the bank made, can't i just know what i did wrong, because i have no idea what i've done they said "No, we've been instructed to not tell you" I MEAN SERIOUSLY what could i have done that was that bad that it resulted in me being expelled from the worksite with no explanation and threatened that if i ever returned i would be fine seriously it's not like i killed or bashed someone on my lunch break for fucks sake to this day i have no fucking idea what i did as far as i was aware, i was doing my work, i was even doing well, i was in finance approvals up to $50k and i was getting commended on how quickly i was processing the applications the manager 3 days prior, commended me on my efforts i seriously have no fucking idea what happened the only question that keeps going through my head is WHAT PROMPTS A COMPANY TO FIRE AN EMPLOYEE WITHOUT ANY SINGLE EXCUSE' i mean, you would have to have done something really fucked up, for them to not want to talk to you and.... i did nothing so.... yeah go figure
I am not sure where you live, but with what I make on RU-vid I have been able to live comfortably with this job. Our sub count is similar so I think you'd be alright.

I can so relate! Fired after 16+ years, then watching the downward spiral that led to the layoff of 400 more and the disappearance of the company's name and identity, it was a sad trail. In retrospect I think they saved my life by removing the pressure I was under. There's always a positive somewhere. ☺

This is why health insurance in the USA sucks. If you were in any other industrialized nation, your son's health wouldn't be tied to a company that can drop you on a whim, and therapy wouldn't cost you tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I agree our health care system sucks. It will cost me almost $2000 a month out of pocket to maintain the insurance he needs. Makes me realize why there are so few people succeeding with home base businesses, etc. The taxation and healthcare costs are astronomical.

Microsoft went downhill hard after that round of layoffs. That new direction they took sucks. They're doing things they used to ridicule other companies for doing and it's sad to see. I used to be a loyal Microsoft girl, but unless they stop their bullshit I probably won't buy any more of their products. WTF are you doing, Microsoft?
OK your comment reminds me I might be doing a COMPLETE spin and switch to Apple. Because my music studio requires an iPad to link and mix with my music program anyway. Might as well right? Microsoft is shit, and here's a heads up for ya. People would call me as I was working in tech support, and some have said that they would never switch to Windows 10, or that they hated the switch that came about. Some were even forced into Windows 10 by the auto install. Yeah Windows in 2016 is a complete disaster. It's been 2 years since this layoff and the only thing Windows has going for them under their new OS is the way its programmable parts work. And the layout design just sucks hard.
Brick and Order I was forced into the Windows 10 install. I'd said no I don't even know how many times and woke up one day with it done. It locked me out of a ton of documents and overrode my access to my already purchased Office suite, and that caused me to turn a paper in late, since I had to find an alternative software etc etc etc. Some people try to push the blame on me, but when you've already said no, you don't expect to wake up with it done in spite of your expressed wishes. Total bullshit.
I'm really sorry for that. I had a similar lock-up to my productivity due to the taskbar stalling permanently, and the media player bugging out FOREVER in Windows 10. The fixes are online unfortunately it's a tasteless pursuit. Very unacceptable and even for someone with patience. Thanks a lot Microsoft. I'll never take another look at their Surface book.
Why switch to Apple? Apple products are made from the infamous Foxconn factory. Look at all those worker testimony reports about exactly how Foxconn treats them and the unrealistic expectations that Apple sets on them. Apple products are made for a fraction of the cost of a Microsoft product and then they charge double what Microsoft would charge. There's a reason that the Apple facility in Cali they are like royalty because they have Chinese slaves to do all the real grunt work. Apple is among the shadiest companies in the world just below by Monsanto or BP. Microsoft is going downhill after a series of fuckups in its attempt to enter into the mobile and tablet world. I only use Windows to game. Everything else can be done open source on a Linux or Ubuntu platform.
Windows 7 is the best operating software I've used, Mac is the worst, just barely worse than 10 (Fuck those infinite loading screen) They've slowly improved 10 so it doesn't have as MANY flaws as it did when I first installed it but-JESUS is it bad at times! Most people go to Linux instead of Windows.

Sorry to hear about the layoff Jerry, I heard about the layoff plans through tech news and wondered if it would affect you. I can sympathize with you because I went through the same thing at about the same age. It was very stressful at first. I intentionally did almost nothing about it for a week to give myself time to come to terms with it. I then became a contract worker (self employed) and that gave me a new perspective on things. I eventually went back to the same company which was later taken over by a very large US corporation (one I now have a lot of respect for) and in the long run, I think the experience helped me get where I am today (which I am very happy with). Mark Tomlinson The mistake I made was becoming complacent after being a high performer for so many years. With a large corporation everyone is expendable and I learned this the hard way. This is why I'm going to be my own corporation from now on. If I end up laying myself off then I'm just being a jerk at that point :P

They must have laid off EVERYONE who has not been working there not as long as you, as most companies have to comply with "seniority." You have 15 years with them under your belt, doing very well (from what you've said :P). So wouldn't legal action be needed? If they were to lay you off but not some guy they hired last year, doing maybe the same as you, that is unfair.

From my understanding MS does not like developers who they classify as "stagnant," meaning they get comfortable where they are at, and do not move around in the company, or advance in the company ranks. I do not know if that applied to you or not.
You are very generous to speak so well about Microsoft. They have fought and won court cases they won due to their money and clout, not the merit of their case. I have a much inside information best not discussed here.They have bought off developers to get exclusive rights. Most know of some of this. I am sorry for what happened to you. I also lost my career of 20 years in another field for similar reasons. Remember: It was not your fault - like me, you were not a willing pawn in their dishonestly. Microsoft has produced excellent products. It is sick to see them leading in the way others are going. I lost my home and am now disabled. Sorry to hear that, Ive just had the same 'discussion' at work after 14 years and it sucks and is scary. I hope things work out for you and your family. One thing I learned is that this process teaches you ALOT about yourself more than anything and you come out stronger for it.
I can tell you what the direction is. Sending your job to some cut rate programmer in India. Surprised? Don't be, the same thing happened to many of my peers and its rampant, especially in the finance/software industries. Why the hell pay you for your great service, when they can have 20 Indian workers in your place in a sweat shop in India?
LOL good point but You're not getting my point, I'm not speaking of educated professionals coming here. Companies will cry QUALITY to the heavens. When in reality all they care about is the bottom line. So I'm speaking strictly about the sweat shops where they take people, train them poorly, treat them poorly and try to pawn the product off as being the same. Unfortunately it isn't. But thats moddern business. This IS happening, I've experienced it with my own eyes. 7 on shore DBAs down to one supported by offshore. Disaster. 10 person infra team down to 2, supported by offshore, total disaster. There is more but typing on a phone stinks. My point is they are deleting years long pros and replacing them with fresh lambs from nowhere to save a buck. Problem is the work doesn't get done correctly or at all and the now diminished staff has too do double, triple what they did before. Meanwhile, management gets pats on the back and huge bonuses for saving the company so much money. Oh well.

Nyran Stanton normally I would agree but think of the USA as it currently stands. Its not really a democracy. More of a giant corporate machine. Its literally almost like that old 80s movie with Robocop where OCP is the government. They could give two craps. They will still have their billions. Special interests run this country. We're all pretty helpless. We have an illusion of power. Pure unbridled capitalism consumes itself eventually. You need checks and balances but the mantra too big to fail pretty much rules the roost. I’m about to go through the same thing. I work on the server team for my employer. We are in the process of decommissioning thousands of servers and virtualizing quite a bit and moving quite a bit of stuff to the cloud. The company plans on running a hybrid model because they have to keep somethings on premises. 50% of my team has already been laid off. I know I won’t last 12 months. I am now studying for aws certs because the cloud is definitely the future.

I don't know if you realized it, but when I didn't have ad blockers google ads would show stuff that is similar as stuff I searched on internet and similar stuff. This data is really valuable to marketing companies and it would be stupid of them if they would make something without profit. It could also be illegal for Google to lose money on purpose because that way they are damaging their shareholders. Next time you comment don't be stupid.

If you don't have a license already or you want to install it onto a new machine you have to buy the license, which is £99 for Home or £180 for Pro. It's also only "free" for the first year, after this you'll have to pay for a license if you want to install it after this point and haven't upgraded your Windows 7/8.1 license.

I really don't get it people think just because you work for a Corporation and you're entitle to have forever employment. You get paid for your service and once you're not needed then that's the end. Yes corporation can hire and fire when they want but if you think short term and fire productive people its your loss. You bring down the overall moral and lose an important asset.

Can you make a program like adblock but for youtube that makes it where you can pick what youtubers that you watch ads for. Also I don't care if you do things like rooster teeth with the in-videos ads. Dennis Walker, idk what's suitable for your need, but on internet you can virtually google anything.. 'computing' is vast category. You can go to MOOC sites like edX, Coursera, Udacity, MIT OpenCourseWare.. skill based video sites like Udemy, Skillshare, etc.. there's a lot programming tutorials if you want to learn about that (or teach kids, I don't know..).

Feel for you Barnacules, but everyone must understand that NO-ONE is indispensible. Even Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, by the guy he hired to help steer the company through difficult times, no less! I wish you all the best, and I'm sure with your unique skill set and experience you will be snapped up by someone, and in 6 to 12 months you'll probably look back on this and find yourself in a much better place. you have 15 years exp in the field man don't worry you'll find another job really fast , you have so many alternatives ( Google , FB , APPLE , Oracle ) not to mention the middle/small companies that will kill to hire someone like you ( get some MBA and go for manager ) . And , oh , try to THINK about ROBOTICS, it's really a good and a promising field !! HECK ! you can MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY and you'll still make it !!! YOU HAVE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES !!!

(Of course I don't envy the reason for that opportunity arising!). I don't watch all your content, but I definitely wish you good luck with all of this! And I hope you can keep the support for your kid up to where it needs to be. I myself am diagnosed with Asperger and I can vouch for the importance of guidance from a young age to be able to work better in society - autism isn't a disease like some people describe it, but it sure makes life hard sometimes (humans, they're weird). Barnacules Nerdgasm I have adhdnos without the h of hyper. And have a lot of learning issues. And actually dropped 2 "levels" at my school (the school system is different in the Netherlands). But giving up isn't an opportunity for me because then I won't be able to show my true skills and actually do my best. I hope you will be able to support your family. Wow... you have touched many people with your struggles by sharing this experience of your layoff, your son's health challenges and your extremely magnetic personality. I'm trying to figure out why I haven't heard of you before as you should have a much larger following than you do now! Events such as these first seem bleak and harrowing but they are ofttimes prods to point us in the direction we're meant to go. They take us outside of our comfort zone where the magic happens, but unfortunately, it comes after much struggle and sacrifice. I know this video is old but I really hope you're in a better position currently.
