Logan from Tek Syndicate found me at World Maker Faire in New York and showed me his OnePlus One Cyanogen phone & claimed it was an iPhone killer & talked me into buying one. I have used iOS for years and have owned just about every iPhone and when I ventured away to Windows Phone I was let down by the lack of app support and general application quality. Android is the middle ground now so let's see how I like it. Also I 3D printed a Micro to Nano SD card adapter and it worked great, it's also in the video!
Update 12/13/2014: I ended up getting an iPhone 6, I love the OnePlus One and think it's a great phone but the Instagram app under Cyanogen was horrible and the camera just wasn't giving me the quality I wanted for my instant posts. If those are not issues for you just about everything else about the phone is better than iPhone, I just wish those two things were not so vital to my daily activities.

Questions & Answers:
Q) What is the biggest let down with the OnePlus One?
A) The camera, it should be fantastic at 13mp and a Sony sensor but all the images with low light are blown out. I think it might be a software problem with exposure settings personally.
Other problems I've discovered over time...
1) The Instagram app sucks, weird delay when taking each video clip and once you start taking video it won't let you rotate the camera for other clips. iPhone app is million times better!
2) I've already scratched the screen just from having it in my pocket. My iPhone screen didn't scratch under the same conditions. Which I don't understand since it's supposed to be gorilla glass. Yeah. No bias, i love it. And all the bugs he was talking about are all app related. Don't like the pictures, get another app. Its all software. And for the scrolling thing, you can play with the hardware acceleration in developer tools. The jerkyness usually is a problem with that. A new android phone takes a week or so to get it configured to the way you like it. But after that its done and you have it just the way YOU like it. And if you use common sense, security isdn't a problem either. If you are the guy who bought a 1000 dollar laptop, and its slow as shit after a month because of shit you download and install, android is not for you. But if you can keep windows reasonably clean and secure you will be fine with android.

I switched from iPhone 4 to Galaxy S4. Android is much more fun and has much more freedom then iPhone. I still prefer iTunes over any other desktop player though.

Barnacules Nerdgasm Apple really has it with how iTunes communicates with the iPhone. Organizing music is so frustrating on android. Random songs keep getting put into a unknown artist. I'v given up on the idea of custom album artwork. If it would just organize the songs in the layout that I have the folders. Artist/Album/Song. I would be ok, but it organizes based on the file info and I can't change what needs to be changed for some reason. My way of describing both phones is the same for Windows and Mac iPhone - simple and easy but as boring as a stick Android - fun and freedom but God do i want to slam this phone into the desk sometimes!

I personally think Apple is better than Android plainly for the fact their phones are a lot more simple to use. I had a Samsun Galaxy, I absolutely hated it, not enough internal memory, forcing close applications, overall slow mechanics. When I got an iPhone, I loved it from the start, it's a lot faster, more memory, you can close any app just by double clicking the home button so whenever you finish doing anything or don't wanna waste battery you can slide it up and it's gone. Only thing I prefer Android to Apple is for music syncing... I hate always going into iTunes, grabbing and dropping my music then syncing, I'd much rather prefer using my iPhone like a harddrive as Jerry said, you can just drag and drop and you're good to go.

I felt the same way last time I tried Android but I feel that it has matured a lot from the last time I tried it. But I do still agree that if you want the no-frills just works experience and you don't have to have absolute control over everything the iPhone is still the gold standard for that experience.

You could just buy a MicroSD lol. 32GB is $15 at amazon. 64GB for $36 usually from SanDisk at amazon. Just saying internal memory is overrated especially when that increases the cost of the phone. I paid $280 for my S5 no contract. iPhone 6 cost me $299 a while back. I flipped the iPhone for $700. After shipping and listing fees I made around $360 dollars.

also depends what brand of android you use google nexus 7 sure i get app crashs but its because i have version 1 of nexus brand and its a tablet but some of them like mine they a decent job i just can't use it to replace my pc because it doesn't have a fan on it and few gigs of ram to not make the lag to lag less sure it has a quad core nivda cpu but it doesn't have much bloatware on it and bloatware makes your system lag moew they put on it

Great choice! iPhone and whole Apple sucks! :D Especially iPhone 5 ASS. Crashes - ok, but Andoid is an open OS, and iOs i a closed one. If Apple would release OS open as Android it would crash after every move you make. iPhone camera is better? Zoom in as much as you can and see the details of taken pictures for yourself :)

Barnacules Nerdgasm It was obvious you are not and experienced Android user. The "review" was at leas awkward. Cyanogen looks like stock Android only you have more customization options, more features and more control over the OS and apps. It's not hard to use of for power users just because it has all those things.

He's got enough experience with everything mobile-related in general that while we can disagree with him on a few points[namely the picture comparison tween iPhone and OnePlus], he clearly understands his subject matter and qualified his statements as his opinions a few times. He doesn't expect everyone to agree with him. He simply states his observations, experiences and opinions for no other reason than to give people insight and perspective. Guys: OnePlus now ships their phones with 2 SIM card trays, one for Micro-SIM cards and one for Nano-SIM cards, so now you won't have to Jerry-Rig yourself a SIM adapter tray like Jerry did.

Depends on the user, iOS is still the more user friendly and stable of the two options. Android is more for power users which I am so it suits me and is stable enough now for me to tolerate it for the freedoms it affords me.

14:27 Android deals with memory by itself, you don't need to close apps unless they are misbehaving. They don't take up extra cpu, and if they are dormant then their ram is up for grabs by other apps as soon as they need it. Full ram is happy ram because then it doesn't need to reload (costing more cpu and battery) if you re-launch that app.

This is why i will never go back to iOS. I dont like the fact that apple want to put a chain around me and trap me in their damn system. U can do so much with android it is like using a computer and I like it! For the not so pc-experienced people, iOS might be the go but for me, a big no. iOS can be so inconvenient sometimes it just pisses me off. With android u can still get free and cracked apps installed on ur device WITHOUT the need to root it. U can install blackmarket which is similar to cydia or other 3rd party stores. Android just give u the freedom that u need without fking voiding ur warranty.

Damn, I actually transitioned from a 5s to a OnePlusOne and I thought the camera was wayyy better on the OnePlus. Android definitely has a learning curve though, I'm still learning new things about this OS every day.

Fernando Gonzales I love it so far, it's hard to find anything to complain about. I've yet to have anything crash on me after using it for about 3 months, and the battery life is fantastic(2 days light-medium use.) I'd highly recommend it if you're looking to pick up a new phone.

My one M8 haven't had a crash yet. (had it since may) The one plus one is a rooted device, Cyanogenmod is not "regular" android. Cyanogenmod is much more unstable than "regular" android. Though, as you said, most crashes on android nowadays doesn't have anything to do with the OS, it's just the fact that the apps have errors in them. That's because there are no quality controlls of the apps that are let in on the Play Store.

Re: one+one review. You didn't like the soft key buttons at the bottom of the phone. You can go to settings, buttons and enable the onscreen navigation bar, which disables the hardware buttons. This uses a little bit of the screen area at the bottom, but I love this feature and this is what I use. Great review. Keep em coming!

Awesome video! You hit the nail on the head. I'd love to see your comparison of Siri vs. Google Now. iPhone users might be looking for that. My one comment on crashes: Being a geek, I've learned to cut all of my devices a little slack for the first few days after I get them. I've crashed different set top boxes, consoles, and phones of all operating systems. Even my new Samsung TV has hung a couple times to the point the entire TV reset. After I quit flitting through and installing everything possible - usually 2-3 days - the devices normalize and stop freaking out. My Galaxy S5 didn't have any issues, but I attribute that to the fact I knew the OS and didn't play around as much. Great job!

iOS has improved, you can take pictures with camera in app, and you can open a browser window in app and press done in the top left corner. Also, if an app opens another, you can press "Back to (App Name)"

Poor fella. Didn't discover in 2 days that you can activate capacitive buttons on the display, and turn off the ones in the bottom bezel :)) Also, the fact that it has tap on screen to wake or lock, a function that bypasses the use of the on/off button if you want...Also that is has the Privacy Guard function that allows you to limit what apps have access to from your device...Also that you can use Gestures function to activate Flashlight, Camera, Music from the off screen, just by drawing a sign on it.... And the best part: This isn't even that great of an Android device. I own it and it's..meh. Because Cyanogenmod can be sometimes unstable and the phone itself doesn't have such a great build. There are better flagship smartphones that I've used lately. HTC One M8 is one of them. Once I've rooted the M8, the build quality of it and the functionality it provided were better than the OnePlus One. If the OPO (which is basically a great SoC with other shitty parts glued together with Elmers Glue) surprised you, try some true Android Flagships.

after ios 8 update my iphone 4s is drastically draining all battery, crashing, I freaking closed all the notifications, siri, weather, app refresh and everything possible which you actually want to use in smart phone to OFF. and so I could use it for half a day. I waited for months but Apple dont give a damn to the old iphone users. Finally ordered by one plus one phone today. Just a tip for guys searching invites: Search it on ebay :)

I got a OPO shortly before the release of the One Plus 2. There have been several upgrades. The One Plus One now comes with physical buttons on the bottom for home, back & menus. If you prefer on screen you can turn them off and turn the on screen buttons on. The Camera: I work as a Dog Trainer now, but when I was younger I worked in photography and video. You know, film you develop and print in a darkroom. Anyway I've got techniques, and used the One Plus One to photograph a wedding. The photos print out real sharp at 11 x 8.5 on my HP Envy 5660. They also show up crystal clear on my PixStar WiFi Photo Frame. White Balance problems seem to be fixed. The brides white gown is pure white both indoors in filtered mixed tungsten & sunlight as well as bright sunlight and indirect fluorescent light at the banquet room of the country club. If you use the Developer Menu you can switch between the Awesome Player (experimental) and the default NUplayer for music. Each in their own way is awesome especially with earbuds! I have a Toyota Camry LE with really great sound. I can use the headphone jack to jack into my tuner/CD player and listen to Spotify at fairly full volume of the car stereo system without requiring use of the shipping phone EQ App and have full fidelity with no distortion. (Tip turn off your goofy and obnoxious notifications first take phone calls via Bluetooth earpiece). I've listened to everything from Kes The Band, Foo Fighters to Lara Fabian (Belgian International Artist) singing with full symphony orchestra. It's all good! That magnetic field, it's more than the speakers. The OPO has NFC.

If you're coming to Android for a while and want to see the full width and breath of what Android can do, check out Tasker! It's an automation app that'll let you do amazing things with your phone or better yet make your phone do it all on its own. With Tasker, I can turn almost any music player into my alarm clock (including Google Play Music, which is what I wake up to every day), I can add in voice controls for controlling music and for personally-created home and driving profiles. Also, since i have a Moto X that comes with a really battery-efficient mode detector for Driving mode, when Tasker sees the Driving mode notification from Moto Assist, it'll trigger my own, more full-bodied Driving mode and kill unneeded radios before cranking up more Google Play Music.

Mostly android crashes after using to many apps, to many ram or overloading CPU. IOS(iphone) has the same problem, but just hangs. Doesn't really bother me though.

Crashes lol i have in 2 years only crashe dmine once and that was becuz i was using it in 42 degrees celcius wi Hile it was overclocked but normally at home and normal days even tho both cpu (1.4 to 1.8 ghz) and gpu (400 mhz to 600 mhz) are overclocked it never has crashed

roni pala I have been using galaxy nexus and nexus 7 sins day one. And i use them extensively... really extensively. So far i count a total of 10 crashes for my Gnex and couple for the nexus 7. Mostly because they could not run compiled code or freeze and reboot due to lack of memory(1GB ram is nothing). The Gnex is at least older than 2 years and the nexus 7 is passing that line soon.

The reason for the removable back is because originally they sold back covers that you could swap like the bamboo and denim ones. They stopped this because it could damage the phone by taking the back cover off.

even though I'm a power user, I don't want to 'power use' my phone. I like the simplicity and app experience with the iPhone. Hate Android with a passion. The experience is so jarring --reminds me of old Nokia symbian os -- and you can't even recommend it to a regular joe shmoe on the street because it's complicated to do things if you aren't familiar with tinkering with settings in general. Even at 299, this phone's overpriced along with the rest of them. Specs isn't everything.

KTO Phantom That is about $1299 my good sir but wait the OnePlus One which has better specs is only $349 for 64GB but I guess the iShit6 has 128GB of storage so let's buy TWO 1+s for $700 now lets get another 2 16GB OnePlusOnes for $300 which makes it $1300 So I could have a 128GB iPhone 6+ which will bend and break with worser specs than the 1+ for 1300 dollars OR get 2 64GB OnePlusOnes and 2 16GB OnePlusOnes making a grand total of $1298

I've been using the OnePlus for awhile now and I completely agree with the pros and cons in this review. I will say that mine came with a nano-sim tray adaptor, using the Google camera app resulted in better pictures, and putting the phone in a slim case help mitigate phone orientation issues.

Sigh.. Once again somebody is hating on the one of the biggest phone companies just because it's one of the biggest. I really don't care, and I like all phones but anytime there is a company that becomes #1 in anything, people start to hate it. Why? Because everyone has them! Bratty teens and spoiled kids? You do realize that if a phone gets that much popularity then everyone would have it. Just because bratty teens own iPhones, it doesn't mean that iPhone is a bratty teen company. Like minecraft. It started out as a cool Indy game idea of just a blocky game. So many people played it that little kids wanted to play it, and then the kids overpowered minecraft and now all you see is people hating on the game because it's too simple and Kidish. Only Windows is immune to your statement I suppose. It' s just stupid Straw men arguments. IPhone good points are still out way by the bad because Apple makes designs the phones in such a way to force you to use their other products, thats the only reason I am starting to hate them. I used to like Apple thought lol.

*little addon to the story at the end* so when i was 13 i went on a cruise ship and they had electronic cards and every time we got one, the thing would stop working after one use. everyday we had to get 2 cards and it lasted 7 days. on the last 2 days we finally figured out it was a phone or a magnetic toy i got because why not.
