Charles O'Rear is the photographer who took the Windows XP wallpaper photo in Napa Valley.
The real story behind the most famous picture in the world.
On the 8th of April 2014, after 12 years, support for Windowx XP ended. The one thing everybody will always remember is it's desktop image 'Bliss', with it's green rolling hills and bluer than blue sky. Doesn't the most viewed picture of all time deserve for a worthy goodbye? We certainly think so!
We started to discuss what we liked and didn’t like, about the 12 year operating system. That discussion led us, as the visual storytellers we are, to speculation about the standard background picture called Bliss. So many questions came up: What does it look like in real life? Who made that iconic image? Where was it taken?
It fired our imagination and within a couple of hours we discovered who made it and where it most likely was taken. But, there was no story about it.
Thats when we decided to take on that challenge: we were going to make the story about the Bliss wallpaper. So, we headed to Napa Valley just north of San Francisco to visit the photographer of the wallpaper, Charles O'Rear.
We never thought this trip would send us on a wild adventure, that would result in our first viral. Over 1.000.000 views within a day! This view count emphasises the fact that an online video doesn’t have to be less than a minute, it just needs a good story!
Thank you Chuck for being so welcoming!

I know! It looks photoshopped because of how green it is, but if you look at nature photographs on fujifilm, they're really brightly colored.

5:28 I am sure his theory is right, for people who used xp. I probably won't forget that photo for as long as I live.

I also always thought it was faked. Too beautiful to be real. Since I finally found this photo 100% real, just really saturated because of Fuji Velvia slide, I to this day use it as my wallpaper on Windows 7 PC. Thanks you Charles!

There’s something so painfully beautiful and nostalgic about not only this photo, but all of Northern California country side including the central coast. I grew up in the OTHER wine country, Paso Robles, and it’s very very similar environment. bliss encapsulates my childhood, riding in the back seat through the country side on the way home in the spring. It allows everyone to feel what I felt as a child. I am so home sick, Southern California just isn’t the same.

here in the Philippines I was in high school in the early 2000s (I'm 33 now). That time only the privileged can have an assigned computer during computer class in a private school. For me, that computer class signify my parents' hardwork and hope to put me in a prestigious school even we are poor and during computer class is no other like in any high school. That default Bliss wallpaper brings a big deal of nostalgia of my high school days

Amazing video. Hits me in the nostalgia so freaking hard. Did a Microsoft RU-vid channel have this up at one point and then took it down? I could've sworn I saw it previously on a Microsoft channel. Amazing work!

Apparently, there was a Microsoft Netherlands channel that had it up previously. It was uploaded about fourteen years ago and was reuploaded here more recently.
