This was just a little experiment to make some nice ambient music with different tuning systems.
This one uses 11EDT, which is basically the same as 7EDO, except the octaves are stretched by about 10 cents to help brighten up the thirds and fifths, which are normally very flat. It's quite a small amount but the stretch compounds with each octave so the tenths are quite good and the compound fifths are perfectly in tune. Since it is the tritave (ratio of 3:1, or octave + perfect fifth) that is being divided into 11 equal steps, it is called 11EDT (11 Equal Divisions of the Tritave).
I really like the floaty sound of this scale with its wholetone and pentatonic flavours. It's also really easy to play with since it sits nicely on a normal keyboard and all the notes sound nice together.

this functions sooo well not just as a xenny/microtonal experiment but also just as music that i want to listen to, lol, and one of the best things i've heard out of microtonal youtube in that regard. this is a very interesting tuning system i didn't know about, and the ambient sound effects that come and go are a really nice touch too! kudos

Wow. I like this more than 12 edo. Why is that? The thirds and fifths? I got over a stomach ache by just sitting down relaxing to this. My ear loves the free floating space this gives me the impression of.

I'm glad you like it! The chords in this tuning are a little exotic and ambiguous on their own, but it's the relationships between them that really create the floaty feel. Everything is evenly spaced and symmetrical, so there's not much of a harmonic hierarchy compared to 12edo.

cool tuning! in 17tet the (unperfected)tritave is also very useable 27 notes in 17tet. You could stretch that one too to fit 3:1 equally in similar fashion. Like that this piece is very long! microtonal music is more then often too short

Thanks! That's a good idea, I'll definitely give 27EDT idea a go. It seems like a good way to reign in some of the sharpness of 17TET

@@therasa001 Neutral tritave scale (3.11.13) 3 2 2 3 2 3 2 + 3 2 2 3 27 tone (17+10) this one I stumbled upon exploring 17tet is quite interesting (it has some cool symmetries and neutral flavours)

Interesting, I'll try it out! I haven't found much success treating the tritave as the interval of equivalency instead of the octave (like in Bohlen-Pierce), but your scale reminds me of the "super ultra hyper mega meta lydian scale" (as Jacob Collier calls it) which works well with standard octave equivalency. It should be really easy to conceptualise on a regular keyboard too

in what situation would you use EDT instead of TET? i saw that you used TET in another video of yours, so, is there a difference in between those two terms? and how do you know when to use one or the other?
@therasa001
@therasa001 Год назад
EDT = Equal Divisions of the Tritave Tritave = octave plus fifth, or ratio of 3:1 Normally the octave is divided as in TET (or more or less interchangeably EDO) I wrote more in the video description, but basically 11EDT sacrifices the tuning of the octave to make other intervals sound better

Hi there, great stuff, is this your first microtonal release? Also, would you consider it a single or an album? (Or even both!) Thanks in advance :)

Hi, thanks! It is one of my first microtonal experiments. Maybe you could call it a single? Or a piece?

This one of 'The Rasa's' pieces doesn't work for me. I find it cluttered. But I'd love to hear a stripped-down version of just the pitches without the jungle sounds and percussion. Pretty please.

I'm not sure it would hold up if I took so much away, but I could revisit the harmonic ideas in the future

What does 11EDT mean?
@therasa001
@therasa001 3 года назад
It's the tuning system - 11 Equal Divisions of the Tritave (a tritave is an octave plus a perfect fifth, or frequency ratio of 3:1). There's some more info in the description of the video
