personally i think that the carbon from the flame is the catalyst for the plasma, as it helps make the air interact with the microwaves up to a point where the atoms become ionized enough to form plasma. that said, air normally doesn't interact with microwaves, and thats why plasma doesn't form in microwaves all the time. now what is probably going on is that the carbon molecules break down and stop the gas from ionizing so easily, and thats why the ball looks smaller at the end of the vid.
@teddy11859
@teddy11859 5 месяцев назад
hmm that makes sense but why that glass exploded i think the gas inside became hot or maybe glass became hot and ofc the glass broke at high temperatures with a little blast as air inside has higher pressure compared to outside due to hot plasma although plasma wasn't super-hot that's why it took time maybe.
@TimeOverMatter
@TimeOverMatter 15 лет назад
Excellent vid... I deal with plasma cutting systems and from what I know about the processes you can have temperatures as hot as the surface of the sun. Now I bet that plasma ball wasn't that hot because you could look at it and not burn your retinas, but I bet it was way hotter then the specs on that tempered glass bowl thus the failure.

Glass doesn't hold it, Plasma was stable.
@discordant8543
@discordant8543 7 лет назад
McDaniel77 It was stable, until it became unstable, you can't really call it stable if it can't be maintained indefinitely with energy input. Since the microwaves are always raising the temperature, you'll eventually reach the point that, no matter how good your container is, it will fail.
@McDaniel77
@McDaniel77 7 лет назад
That's true! In space there is no container which could fail, that's why plasma like a huge sphere called sun could persist for eons.
@discordant8543
@discordant8543 7 лет назад
McDaniel77 Then the conclusion is simple, we will create our plasma in a vaccum! Well... I do not think we'll be able to localize the gasses enough to do it ):

It's basically electricity on fire. It is contained to the fast revolving loop you see around the bowl, it eventually will melt through the gas but the since it is so hot, it dissipates in the surrounding air very rapidly.

The smoke(gas)from the match is heated through microwave radiation and then ionized stripping the electrons from the atoms allowing the + and - charges to move more freely. Most commercial applications do this within a near-perfect vacuum.

From what I hear, the microwaves are absorbed by the electrons of the carbon atoms that the fire produces. This knocks the electrons off the atom's nuclei, creating the ionized gas, plasma.

@mxviii
@mxviii 14 лет назад
It doesnt always break the glass. The glass is breaking due to heat stress, because plasma can reach extremely hot temperatures the longer it remains active. What you need to d, is preheat the glass. Preheat glass will be resistent to shattering,m and will usually melt instead. However after you tunr off the microwave, and the glass cools, it will shatter, so you have like 2 minutes to remove the glass and put it somewhere else, before it breaks.

a plasma is when gas atoms lose their electrons due to heat so a magnetic field can shaped it because the protons and electrons are separate.
@igorcoreixas
@igorcoreixas 13 лет назад
@legitnoob107 actually, using Bohr's equations MICROWAVES have more energy than the scattered photon of our clothes, as wave lenghts decreases it energy INcreases, so microwaves are very energetic at all, so energetic that it converts into thermal energy of molecular vibrations.

Of course it has a charge, because the particles it is made of (protons, electrons (neutrons)) , have a charge and they are not together anymore, so you could manipulate the different charged particles with an magnetic field, pretty well :)

To start off, plasma is a "soup" of freely moving negative electrons, and positively charged ions. Given that an atom can be either negative, positive or neutral, i would think the same applies for the plasma. I'm not a physicist btw im just making assumptions.
@catherinelane3042

The whole point of plasma is that the electron separates from the nucleus, so no there is no charge.
@legitnoob107

@igorcoreixas Because microwave ovens are set so they release light at the resonant frequency of water. This certain frequency causes water molecules to vibrate more than usual, which produces heat.

well yes the gasses from the candle got superheated by the microwave and made the bowl explode but a candle alone of this size wouldn't do much of anything to tempered glass like this unless left a long time then cooled very quickly instead such great heat was produced that the glass expanded so fast it pushed itself apart and made it explode

This is plasma!!!....What is burning....we have free electrons....i.e. PLASMA In physics and chemistry, a plasma is typically an ionized gas. The free electric charges make the plasma electrically conductive. Plasma typically takes the form of neutral gas-like clouds or charged ion beams. They are typically formed by heating and ionizing a gas, stripping electrons away from atoms, thereby enabling the positive and negative charges to move more freely. THANK YOU FOR all the comments.
@watsisname
@watsisname 15 лет назад
No, because *most* plasmas, including this one, are low density (remember it's gas-like), so there's just not enough superhot material to do any major damage.

@lucasfowler9795

The electron retains it's negative charge. The microwave creates plasma because the electrons of the newly dissociated (weakly bonded) molecules from the burning match are jostled around by the microwaves and pushed momentarily into higher energy states. When these electrons fall from the higher energy orbits to lower orbits, light and heat are produced and "Tah-Dah" PLASMA! And yes plasma is manipulated through magnetic field.
