I had ordered a new microwave oven from Amazon to replace mine that had developed the flickering and power cut. I had seen this fix and figured why not? Tried it; it worked; I cancelled the order. THANKS to the "cardboard/aluminum foil barrier."
This worked and was fairly easy = I had a little trouble putting the control panel back on as the screw hold wouldn't line up but I can't believe how easy this was - thank you thank you thank you and Happy Holidays - all of them - to you and your family -
OMG. I had the breaker dedicated to the microwave replaced. Still the display lights flickered. Removed 3 screws. Made my card board shield out of a graham cracker box. Foil, cardboard, scotch tape and 45 minutes and DONE. It works. Holy Miley. I love you, man.
Thank you so much for this. It worked perfect. While I was doing this MacGyver fix is ribbon cable that is some sort of wiring connection that goes to the lcd display. Looks like it has a thin metal foil laminated to it however that has delaminated and no longer covers the wires. I’m guessing that is ultimately what the problem is.
I'm going to try this and probably save myself having to buy a new microwave! Not to mention finally get my turkey BLT. X) Thank you for taking the time to post this.
As a last resort, I used this fix on my GE spacemaker and to my surprise it worked! I made it approx. 3" x 4" and hung it to block the large IC on the board. I had one more shutdown but was able to clear it. Think I should have made it bigger,5 x 6 maybe?
Great post! Had similar issues with a Hotpoint microwave and was able to fix using your aluminum foil method. In 30 min time (mine was a lot harder to get into) I was able to save the $250 for a new unit. Thanks for sharing! Eric
