I like the new formats and how The Smoking Tire is evolving. It seems like the double team car reviewing is becoming more preferred thanks to Throttle House, Everyday Driver, and that's exaxtly how Savagegeese adapted.
@C J B Porsches are generally reliable unlike Lotuses (Loads Of Trouble Usually Serious is what it stands for). Also good luck finding a Lotus mechanic - I have two, the local sketch Ferrari dealer who sells Lotus and an indy 12 hours away in another state. I was on the verge of getting an Evora until getting totally turned off by the terrible owner experience.
I always find the Boxster/Cayman to look odd in pictures/film, but when you see them in person they just feel exactly the right size with near perfect proportions. It's the goldilocks sports car.
I really liked to way the rear window of the original 987 Caymans sunk in a little. That was a great look they sadly got rid of for a more rounded back hatch. They probably gained a couple square inches of cargo space doing that. I do like the side scoops going into the doors more on the 981 and 982's. And how the rear wing continued into the tail lights on the 981, although when you got close it never seemed to line up.
Completely agree, I thought they just weren’t for me but when you actually see them on a road or parked up you realise just how sophisticated the design is.
I completely agree. I have a 981 and in pictures it looks okay but nothing special. But when people see it for the first time in real life, all of them go "wow, that's a really cool looking car!"
I have a C8 and I love it , but I'm obsessed with the GTS 4.0 . ( and the Spyder , GT4 ) If the Porsche market wasn't so insane right now , I might make the switch . Thanks Matt and Zack , TST is the BEST channel !
I have a Cayman, and almost bought a C8 when they first came out and GM couldnt fill orders and people started flipping them for dumb money. I still think i'd love a C8, but I definitely adore my Cayman and plan on owning more Porsches. I dont think theres a wrong answer between the two, but yeah you definitely have to keep the Cayman more pinned but it never gives up the chassis. Truly a magic car.
I am german and had a C6 Z06 EU Model in black for 10years 2009 to 2019 and 160.000km in the middle of germany. The cost per kilometer / mile for the corvette was less 30% compared to a 997 GTS in parts and gasoline. No doubt I would choose the corvette in 2023. Before I forged to mention it: The Z06 was very fast and very much fun.
@@jonasbaine3538 When it comes to classic cars, I agree with you. The new models are good, but it's hard to decide against the competition from Europe or Asia
@@maximborodyuk3773 Yes, exactly Golfs, BMWs and Porsches have better value Preservation with certain models you still pay on top. The quality is also better. Did you see the end of the video?
One thing I like is when analyzing the design of the car, you walk around and highlight good points and bad points. Probably a good shot to film talking through your conclusions should you be so inclined. This video style absolutely rules and it’s so impressive. I’m very happy with the vid.
What u guys didn't mention as an option is a slightly used Cayman, loaded ( which seem to be always available) vs a new C8. I'd still pick the Cayman, simply because I prefer the manual. Even long geared.
@@fzr1000981 the 718 is being phased out of ICE and becoming an EV sports car. Porsche has said this for a while now and I believe in 2025 we will see the new EV successor to the current 718. Basically the last chance to get a new mid engined ICE Porsche. And after the 718 GTS 4.0, the next cheapest naturally aspirated Porsche is the GT3 which is crazy expensive
I've never driven a Vette of any vintage, but I have driven my uncles Cayman GTS 4.0..and I've got to say this: if the Stingray even comes close to the same experience on a twisty road..it's a very very good car.
you are too old for both guys. It looks ridiculous to seen grown a__ men in those cars. buy a macan or a 5 series if you dont want your wife and kids to be ashamed of you
I got a 718 Boxster GTS. When I went to buy a C8, the sales rep took all my info ran my credit and then explained that the $70k base Vette had a $30k dealer markup. So I passed on it and bought my 4th Porsche instead and I love it.
Something about this one felt more polished. Felt like the dialogue was professionally written and reminded me of some other well-produced car review channels that probably have much bigger budgets. Good job guys!
Kind of feels like old Top Gear minus the back and forth conversation. You have Matt screaming "Porsche!!" Like Clarkson screaming "AMG!" And then someone else going " but wait this does the same thing...but cheaper" But yes. I love the upped quality of these films. Even if you know, going in how it's going to end.
The Cayman is the true sports car. Excellent steering, light weight, manual transmission option, flat NA engine with super low COG and immediate response. It's the perfect combination of things for a tossable fun car. One of those cars you hop in and everything feels right from the seating position down to the placement of the window switches. The choice is easy if you're a purist
what year makes it the "true sports car".. Give me a break. original caymans? current caymans? Vettes have always been true sports cars. Purist? Sounds like a typical porsche fan language. Get some balance.
I'm glad you made a point to talk about MRC, as it really is a game changer. Having had it on my previous SS 1LE and an Audi TTRS, they are the only sports cars I have had that I felt didn't need to do any modifications or upgrades on. Porsche and BMW really need to get rid of their proprietary in house suspension (which are both really old tech. now and slow acting for MRC like so many MFG. have now. Also, glad you touched on the suspension geometry as well. You did leave out the biggest issue though on the Cayman, which is that it not only uses struts up front, but in the rear as well, and it is more noticeable in the rear when it comes to lateral stability. Even basic regular cars at least use a multi-link in the rear.
they seems like being paid by porsche, almost blatantly lying/leaving out of test a lot of important things. they seemed to miss rear suspension setup on both cars, as Corvette has double wishbones on the rear as well - which you cant get in any road-legal porsche.
@maximborodyuk3773 matt is a Porsche guy. While yes, he's had a corvette in the past and he will always use that statement like someone defending themselves with a " I have an (insert ethnic group here) friend" . He's none abashed about where his loyalties lie. I mean while he Said the 300ish horsepower GTS is "fast enough", he just got done dropping 40 or 50 grand to Deman Motors on top of the cost of his 992 to get the same kind of power level the vette delivers stock. 🙄 While I like Matt's commentary on moat things. Let's just admit he's a Porsche guy just like Clarkson is an AMG snob.
This was a fantastic video! I’m about to sell my 987.2 Cayman, and I don’t think anything will fill the hole it leaves until I get another newer Cayman. Nothing feels like a Porsche.
@@maximborodyuk3773 Gallardo LP550-2 was fun but it feels heavy, it’s not as tossable. I enjoyed the new NSX though it felt more like a computer, very fun though. Aston’s V12 Vantage was a riot but it’s clearly more of a grand tourer. The AMG GTS would definitely be a future contender, nothing bad to say there. 488 Pista was genuinely insane but I’d prefer the 430, the 430 is the analog experience I absolutely love. I’d take a 430 over a similar age Porsche for sure, but $$$. Is that enough experience or shall I keep going? I have driven and experienced many incredible vehicles, and my personal view is that none match the driving feel of the 987/997 generation Porsche. Especially in the price range of the 987/997 Porsche family.
@@hockey4life4560 umm. You mentioned cars that are even on paper are meh. Unfortunately, I didn't drive most of them, but: 1) Gallardo's dont exactly have driver's car reputation. 2) new NSX is awful, and it's nowhere near a serious sportscar. It's slow except the straight. 3) aston is GT, not a sportscar again. 4) amg gts is GT spec also, but it's far better than previous ones. GTR should be sweet spot. Didn't drive that one yet. 5) Ferrari are good (except shitty interior), and you agreed that you chose them over Porsche. Why are you bringing the money? Isn't that all whine about german cars being tremendously overpriced isn't just a whine, but reality? If we're talking about below 100k price range, there is C7 GS/ C7 Z06. Better in every possible way and actually have a soul and engine (angry porsche vacuum cleaner 300hp noises). Oh, and it's actually could do track bone stock. C8 is less raw, but it's not bad at all, still a lot of feedback. In the upper price levels there are Mclaren's also. Didn't drive them, but should be good by any means. I have driven a lot of vehicles as well. No old porsche, though
I laughed pretty hard at "abstinence wall" I love the idea of a corvette and the value they offer, if I had the money I'd go cayman for the size, weight, and styling
For me the Corvette has some Ferrari vibes. I love that Chevy dealers anywhere can service it. Love Porsche and had several but like the idea of contributing to the quantum leap forward that Chevy has made with the C8. Advantage Corvette. My only criticism is the Corvette styling which to me is a bit shouty and overdone. But it is growing on me.
Don’t let them fool you, that cayman gts 4.0 runs 0-60 in 3.4 and 11.7 at 120mph quartermile stock in pdk form. Compared to the c8’s 11.2 at 122 mph. I’d say they would be dead even from a roll race, or on a road course.
Well put together video. I have a Cayman GTS 4.0 manual and I love it. I see this one was filmed in the OC Santiago Canyon area where I frequently go after our Saturday morning Cars and Coffee.
Fun review and as an owner of a 2020 c8 z51 with mrc shocks this things a beast. I always order 1LT or 1LZ interiors because the interior luxury appointments mean very little to me as I daily drive these cars. The performance advantage of the c8 is dramatic over the Porsche and even Matt who picked up a boxster spider last year dropped big bucks to tear into a brand new engine in his boxster to up the performance. Always makes me wonder. Why we continually hear performance is of little value when he dropped big bucks to hop up the motor in his brand new Porsche. Kind of a contradiction yet either way the review was fun. Both great iconic sports car brands. When my z06 eventually comes in I’m sure I’ll enjoy that daily driver even more. These rear engine sports cars are in fact great in the snow here in the NY tristate area. Remember the Larger rear trunk of the c8 holds the targa roof that comes standard in the corvette. I love top off driving so it’s a big win for me although I think for the z06 I’ll do the htc to drop the rear window during the cooler months to enjoy the engine sound as it goes through its power band. Great review by both Zack and Matt. Always fun. I look forward to your Eray review as well. 655 hp 595 tq awd while I want to know want it sounds like inside the closed cabin. In case your wondering what enthusiasts want to know. 911 hybrid versus Eray should make for another interesting comparison
Lol exactly like stop lying to everyone. The c8's the best sports car for the money period. I just can't pay 6 figures for the low hp/tq of the Porsche.
as an owner of a 2022 C8 Convertible Z51 LT2 package with MRC, I love this corvette. Mid engine, hard top convertible, super car performance and under $100,000!!( I did not want to pay more than $100K for a toy car.) I do miss high Rev sound of my CBR 600RR.
The Corvette has made huge leaps in performance and the quality of engineering. And Porsche is...well...Porsche. But that big American V8 makes all the difference in the experience. Touché, Chevy. You're doing a great job of capturing what you learn from the racing you're doing (as it should be).
Lotus Emira. Better driver's car than either. Very few people are buying these as their only car. And the Emira is better looking than the Cayman, which is a little dull.
Yeah, the Vette is just a bit much. Looks like its wants to be a baby hypercar. For that reason i couldn't daily it. But its undoubtedly a beastly car. Im more than pleased with my Cayman. Fits my needs perfectly. Oh, and it has a manual :p
Well, if it's just a true sports car experience you want, and like me could never afford either of these two cars, save a ton of money and get a Miata! Even an older one. I LOVE both of these cars in the video, but they're not even close to my budget. Especially when you consider maintaining them once you get them. Even the tires are crazy expensive. Great video guys! Love seeing these cars out on the road.
I thought the same until I bought one and changed out the wing for a larger, higher wing. At first I thought the problem in the rear design was the taillights but then recognized the strangeness of the standard wing. The higher wing install created a lot of composure to the rear design that had otherwise seemed forced and not as engaging as the rest of the car. The new wing is not only higher but it also hangs over the tail of the car which dramatically changes the look of the car. As a Ferrari enthusiast the C8 bothers me a bit, because I see some stolen design elements from the 458, 488 within the C8 body, but if you really look at it you can also see some of the iconic elements of the C2 and C3 that really do keep the C8 looking like a Corvette. All in all, it's definitely a mashup, and that's probably why it's not considered to be, "beautiful"... But overall it checks off all the boxes and I love it. My wife told me I could have a Ferrari and continue to work or I could have a C8 and retire... No brainer.
Cracked windshield on the Vette, ouch. Would you say that the Cayman's steering is as good as the Evora/Emira? "I don't value race track speed" says the guy who spent how much in engine upgrades to that Boxster :)
Should have been a comparison against a base model Cayman. The GTS starting price is over $25k higher then the Vette's. AND with the PDK, or any real options added, the GTS it's over $100k too. Also Matt, come on, complaining the lower tier model Vette's interior feels cheap compared to the GTS, WHAT?? Get the highest interior trim package and compare it to that. Fully trimmed it's still way less money then the GTS. As is, this was just kind pointless comparison, the Z51 outclasses the GTS in so many ways but lost just because it's not a Porsche? You literally gave the GTS 2 points out of your 5 point subjective scoring system just "bEcaUse PoRscHe". No point for price to performance either, convenient. The Z06 at $106k vs the GTS (w/PDK) at $100k would be a better $100,000 car comparison. And that would be a one sided battle.
@@I999-g2s The think that makes Corvette special is how broad the power band is. From 1200 rpm all the way to 7500 rpm. You always have power in all gear, whenever you need it. the Flat6 requires to be more in 3K RPM to really get the best out of the engine. I've done autocross with both cars and although they both perform great, the corvette was always the faster cars even when you think the Porsche would excel. I had more luxury in my Vette compare to the GTS and for a daily driving, I just a more pleasant experience. The porsche really needs to be driven hard to really start to shine. it's a the edge that it's brilliant. Either way, my time with the Vette was great so was the time with the Cayman GTS. I didn't regret my time in both but given the choice of 1 or the other, I will go back to the Vette.
@@fogboundturtle thanks for the colour, much appreciated. My 911 is much the same as you describe, power band is beyond 4k rpm and it’s lost fun at 7/10th’s and beyond. I’m very very tempted to get a C8…
I have the Boxster GTS 4.0 with manual coming in a month and I've always preferred the styling, feel and pedigree of Porsche. The Lotus(s) and Corvettes definitely have nice stats as well but I've never really got into the recent designs of the vette. Any of these are great driving choices though, just all depends on what gets your blood going and what is available to you. Thanks as always for the entertaining and informative videos.
You'll be thrilled - every PCA member I have ran into: "Once you go Porsche, you never go back..." - basically you become a lifetime owner. "Better" does not always mean on paper numbers - which - is what too many obsess about.
Congratulations Gerry - I’ve had my Boxster GTS for 6 months now and it blows me away every time I drive it, and I’ve had some seriously good cars in my back catalogue! Not sure how long you’ve waited (mine took 18 months) but it’ll have been worth it…
After owning my Cayman 4.0 for 10 months now I know I made the right choice and it is the most perfectly balanced sports car. Mine took 11 months from deposit to delivery.
Pedigree is a problematic word considering Prof. Porsche’s early client, and the fact that Corvette Racing has been dominant in GT3 racing many times, but congratulations dude, awesome car.
A few facts were left out. Fuel consumption. Fuel capacity. Cost to maintain. Cost of replacement parts. Size of dealer network for service. Warranty coverage for track use. Length of drivetrain warranty. The Corvette is superior in each of these areas. Yes, the Porsche might be the better car. But, as Zora Duntov said, "space shuttle nice, but who can afford"
i agree, i drove both of them back to back. C8 gets all the attention, but the cayman you just want to drive and drive because it feels good and so put together. C8 feels like a JET on the road. The cayman is 600 lbs lighter, more nimble, stiffer suspension, handling is better, track ready.
I don't get the hate for the corvette aesthetics, rear or otherwise. I think it looks absolutely great yet every car reviewer mentions how ugly it is or how the rear is ruined or whatever. Whole thing looks great to me. I'm really torn between these 2 cars, I want to get one to replace my older Cayman, but not sure which. Leaning towards a 2LT Z51 with mag & front lift, but I haven't said "no" to the GTS yet. I feel like you have to put significantly more in options into the Porsche just to get comparable features. But even my older Cayman has the better steering than the C8, and the C8 steering is pretty good. Porsche makes amazing steering systems. The road feel overall is fantastic. The mag ride & front lift though on the vette is just a game changer. I can enter my driveway at straight-up 90* with the front-lift with the vette. Can't do that in the Cayman. I disagree with Matt on the finances side. MAYBE the used value will stay up purely because it's the 4.0 and they're knifing the 6 cyl (especially; if it has the manual), but otherwise Porsche values plummet used, and short term you'll likely lose more with the Porsche, but I reckon it'll hold the value long term because of the manual + 6cyl in a world where they're both dying. But they're going to knife the vette soon, it's going to be all electric, and when that happens I reckon the C8 values will hold, so IDK.
@@MrSlowestD16 I don't even fully disagree with you, but the the rear of a gallardo suits it's body shape more than the corvette does though. When you put it that way though, don't think the big rectangular rear is necessarily the problem, just that it kind of stick out on the body shape of the c8, it's just integrated as well
@@tbunreall Yeah I think it's noticeable from the front side b/c the rear window / c-pillar tapers inwards, into what is basically a rectangle. It seems to be 2 distinct lines. But look at a pic of a McLaren MP4-12C - that has virtually identical lines in the rear, I think you could even make the claim that Chevy ripped off that design, and nobody ever said that car was ugly. I can see how it's 2 different shapes, but it doesn't appear ugly to me. I feel like it gets a double standard b/c it's a Chevy. Not to mention the rectangular lines allow a lot of trunk space (and a big engine), good stuff. Targa storage on-board = tits, and anything that you could put proper bags in for overnight trips and such? Fantastic. That's what I love so much about my current Cayman, I can stock up the trunk the frunk on a Costco run and it holds a good bit. I think it'd look tighter in the rear and maybe wouldn't get so much criticism if it didn't have a trunk, if it was frunk-only, the rear just ended after the engine. But that kinda goes against the Corvette design philosophy.
base zo6 is 109k before taxes and markups, cayman gts 4.0 hits 106k with a pdk and seats added before tax/markups. thats a much more interesting comparison in the realm of hypotheticals
Yeah their not comparing the right cars here. The base corvette is significantly cheaper than the cayman. The z06 is the right car to compare price wise, and the z06 would absolutely slaughter the cayman in every way. Wouldn’t even be remotely close. But that’s how a corvette works. It wouldn’t be a corvette if it didn’t slaughter every car in its price range (and higher) That’s it’s purpose, and it does it well. Also it seems Matt is very biased towards Porsche (for very good reasons)
It really does come down to what you're looking for, to me and my uses the corvette is the better option. Its not as classic looking but it just looks more exciting than the porsche to me. I do prioritize performance as well because i regularly drive track events and the corvette is better suited to that. Both cars are great it just depends what you're looking for.
I think the Corvette gets you more budget Ferrari vibes while the Cayman is…a Porsche. I think the Emira transcends these two with more exotic styling and, controversially, perhaps a better noise stock for stock. Least useable day to day perhaps but seems to be the most interesting to me. The Cayman is the choice though. If only the base C8 was spicier!
Im a porsche guy who has a GT2RSMR and a manual 991.2 GT3 and between these two, i would pick the Vette any day. Now if it was a GT4 vs the Z51 then that could sway it to the GT4 in case it was a manual.
Thanks for a very good review on these two cars. I have one "heretical" comment to make about this comparison. In the US, whether you like it or not, at some point you are going to have to make drives of some length on interstate highways. This means that cabin noise IS a factor in a quality of life comparison for a sports car. I know from experience that Porsche products permit a ton of road noise into the cabin and long distance drives at highway speeds are less enjoyable as a result. I don't know whether the Corvette has a similar "feature" or not and I would have liked to hear about that.
Despite having two Porsches in my garage I find this merely a so-so comparison. Price wise, a proper comparison would have been at least a 3LT Corvette vs the Cayman GTS 4.0. I am currently shopping for a low mileage GTS 4.0, but I have noticed how feature rich a 3LT Corvette is.
If the Corvette looked like the Emira, it would win hands down with these two. The Porsche has no wow factor and for my first mid-engine car, it had to have that. Porsche's are for people who have already had their fill of "look at me" sports cars and want something a bit more "mature". These two have been privileged enough to have that experience. The vast majority of people who haven't bought sports cars in the normal course of their lives point, smile and/or ask me to rev my Corvette, even when a Porsche is hanging around nearby.
These are my two favorite cars. I just received my C8 about two months ago and absolutely love it. I just can't imagine the Cayman being better for what you get from the C8 as far as price, but maybe performance.
Great video. Having owned a $72k C8 and an $84k G87 M3 xDrive, I would like to see a comparison between those 2. In my opinion, value of the C8 is overrated. The M3 was easily worth $12k more with better interior quality and not to mention 503 BMW ponies just pull way harder than 495 Chevy ponies. With that said the C8 is still a fun car and a good value for the 1LT anyway.
@@wesleywalls7582 to the 1LT it is. Seats are comfortable in the C8 but the material quality is not up to the M3. Even if they were equal, the M3 pulls much harder than a C8. That alone is worth another $12k. Having said that I’m not a C8 hater, it was a fun car. Just not near the beast the M3 is from pretty much all acceleration points (drag, roll, etc). Sound however, the C8 takes that one easily. It’s splitting hairs, they’re both nice cars. Just giving my perspective having put roughly 10k miles on both.
This is a great video and great comparison, I love both cars, but I will go for the Porsche simply because it has a stick, And I feel the fit and finish on the Porsche is next level.
i have a base 718 cayman and it’s my daily. definitely so comfortable and feels so much bigger inside for as small and sporty as it is. looks amazing too….as for the vette i originally liked it when it was announced, but now i feel like the front end has knock off super car vibes and seems kind of basic imo
Corvette C8= hot wheels body kitted car. Everyone and their mom has one of these at a stop light . Cayman = exotic , classy and can take corners with no effort. It’s not all about 0-60, it’s about exclusivity too
The biggest thing going against the Corvette (that can be argued a strength in ways) is that the C8 is the first generation mid engine Corvette. People like Matt look at consistency of platform, but Chevy was smart enough to know when to flip the script in the name of the future of the Corvette instead of holding on to tradition for tradition's sake. The fact that Porsche won't allow the top of the line Cayman to outdo the upper 911 even though mid engine layout trumps rear engine is testament to holding on to tradition for tradition's sake. The other thing going against the base model Stingray is that the Z06/07 exists and is on another level in almost every way. That leaves the C8 Stingray looking less performance driven because the Z06 shows what the Corvette can be.
Today on SmokingTIre Matt and Zack peer directly into my brain with today's comparison. STOKED for this one. 10 years ago if you seriously told me a Corvette could run with a Porsche I wouldve pointed at the Cobalt steering wheel and laughed at you....now? Woooo baby.
double wishbone allows for more compliance while properly controlling the camber during body roll from cornering. remember: the point of suspension is to keep wheels on the ground over bumps, so compliance (softer) is better. McPherson has limited travel before camber (and grip) goes wonky, so you HAVE to stiffen it to allow for high cornering forces, but this only works on smooth surfaces; bumps now upset the stiff suspension.
The Vette has some rather questionable design choices, like the chunky taillights and the choice to stick the rear plate up high instead of in the bumper, but it also has great supercar proportions that give it real presence in person. The Cayman has no such missteps (although the upturned rear quarter windows always looked cheesy to me, and I wish instead they were rounded like the 911 and pretty much every other Porsche). But it is dated and dull. It's more Corolla than Concord. Even a new one looks too close to the used car special collecting dust at the edge of the Toyota lot, even when you pay $100K for it, which is enough points against it that I'd rather be seen in the Corvette. Seriously, look at just the door and mid-section of the Cayman/Boxter, other than the scoop, there's not much going on. The interior is a similar story. The Corvette has the squared off wheel, and the polarizing wall of switches--but it has great infotainment and modern shapes. The Porsche is clean, but when you look at areas like those center vents, they look like they were pulled out of a minivan or Mercedes from 15 years ago. I might ultimately choose the Lotus Emira V6 over either one, as it is the best looking, the most rare, better sounding than even the 4.0L GTS, and light. I'd trust the Vette to be more trouble-free though. In the end, I'd probably wind up with the Vette. At least you won't be waiting 12+ months like the Lotus.
It’s not even a comparison the C8 Corvette has much better performance for less money. And there’s no thing as fast enough. Corvette rules. It’s obvious both of these guys are Porsche fan boys.
Maintenance. Everyone always forgets the maintenance. Why is maintenance not included when evaluating all around value and bang for your buck?? No, thank you. I am on the hunt for a C6 ZO6, or ZR1 w/manual transmission. Love your videos!
@@newone-gd9sk I am a true driver. If, you are only worried about the value of the car that only tells me that you are only a "Sunday" driver. People like you are like those garage queens at the car show that builds a giant model and never drive them. Do a history dive into Porsche and then you will realize that Porsche was meant to be driven.
With a manual transmission your performance goes down as well, you can't remove a Cayman's roof, analog gauges (take it or leave it), the C8 turns more heads than the Cayman.
I've owned 2 Corvettes before owning 5 different Porsches. I prefer the Porsche for a variety of reasons. The problem with this comparison is that other being similar in price, they aren't really a good comparison. I would always compare a 911 and a Corvette. The build quality, fit and finish of the Cayman is better than the Vette, and that's one reason it's in the same price range even though it doesn't have quite the performance. Corvette keeps getting better and better but still lags behind Porsche in build quality, fit and finish. If you want the fastest sports car for the least $$$, buy the Corvette. If build quality and overall driver feel is important and you're not interested in drag racing, buy the Porsche.
@@IndependenceCityMotoring I didn't say Porsches were without any flaws or issues. But I've never had any of those mentioned happen to me. Corvettes have had similar issues as well. I'm referring more to major aesthetic problems like panel fit, creaks and squeaks and poor workmanship. I was at a recent Cars and Coffee with several Vettes and Porsches. I saw very few flaws on any of the Porsches, but several on Corvettes. The C4 and C5 vettes that I owned were fun cars, but the quality of the fit and finish were substandard. A Toyota Camry from the same era was put together better. If you put enough horsepower in a dump truck it will go very fast, but you're still driving a dump truck.
@@neilfisher7999Since we are talking 20 year old gens, I'd rather have a minimalist/basic interior than a grenades engine from a bad IMS bearing. Also the 996-era 911 interior is ugly as sin.
@@IndependenceCityMotoring I owned a 2000 996. Changed the IMS at 75,000 miles. Original IMS bearing was in perfect condition. The IMS issue is way overblown. That said, it is reasonably inexpensive to upgrade the IMS and not worry about it. The only other thing I did to the car was routine maintenance and drove the heck out of it. I agree the interior wasn't the prettiest, but zero rattles, squeaks, or unusual wear. Plus the fit and finish made a Vette of the same vintage look like a 5 year old put it together. Porsche, there is no substitute.
Matt Farragut bought the wrong car. The Corvette is better in every single way and it’s cheaper. That Corvette spits in the face of German sports cars and I love it.
So glad you guys officially called out the golf club requirement for ruining what could've been a beautifully balanced car. GM benchmarked the 458 Italia when designing the C7, but I don't seem to recall a rear boot in that perfect nexus of Italian loveliness.
New windshield cracked already? I have been wondering about that with the new corvette. Was it a flex crack? I have been looking at the new c8 windshield. Thinking that’s the weak point in the chassis design. Did a rock hit that? Or did you guys realize it was broken after driving hard? As a window guy. I’m very curious. The window structure doesn’t look thick enough. I could be completely crazy! But it looks like the a pillars are to small to withstand twisting. I have already replaced several c8 windshields.
If I was the type who put on drivers gloves and my racing specs I get the Porsche. If I spend that much money I truly want more than just the name. They have been making that model for 20 years and it’s still 96k with manual seats. They have to keep it light because it does t have the power otherwise. Porsche is Porsche..they haven’t truly changed a design ever . These cars are just on different levels. But I do love the content.
What a great way to close this video out. Zak is priceless. I want the Cayman GTS4.0 with a stick shift. If I won the lottery, I would take it to the guy that did the 4.5 conversion with the short gears. I think its a bad investment as you'll never get that money back in resale.
I dunno - I don't think you get every dollar back, but I think you get 50 or 75 cents to the dollar back on a Deman setup. It's a highly desirable configuration (unlike most mods).
A loaded base 718 cayman is almost $90k and that's without even getting goofy with extended leather. Porsche options are crazy. An absolute base Cayman S is $80k and still more expensive than a 2lt z51 c8. That base Cayman will be missing a ton of features compared to the c8 too. I like caymans but you get so much less for your money. If money were no object I'd take a GT4 RS any day though.
Big difference! My friend has a Porsche..he hardly drives it because he doesnt want to pay for the tune ups and service which are about 1500 to 2000$ a pop.. i would imagine the Corvette would be brake pads and a oil change.. i would take the Vette everytime!!
@@cnewell1971 Corvettes are cheap until they aren't. There's a ton of custom Vette-specific parts that aren't cheap. Your friend needs to move on from that Porsche. If $2,000 services are too much then they simply can't afford the car.
It’s the new Lotus Emira which is the best car under 100k. But still the best, Miata is always the answer for normal guy like me. If I had 100k to spend, I would get a Miata, Lexus SUV and 2 jet ski and left over would be spent on 2weeks vacation.
GT4 is superior. It’s an “entry level” GT car, and will hold its value better because of it. Only reason not to is if you want PDk. Similarly if you’re spending more that $110,000 that can get you close to a 991.1 GT3.
The fact that we have to have a brief mention about quality physical buttons and controls speaks volumes to the stupidity of excessive modernization (aka screen takeover). Thanks Matt and Zack for great content as always!
Truth. Over 100k for 300tq is insane. I'm still debating if I should try to go after the z06 since the normal c8 is already more performance than you'll ever need.
@@TheChocolateChamp No one needs a Z06, u want one! It will hold it's value better and perform like a super car on track, otherwise a regular C8 has more performance than anyone needs on a daily or weekend drive
@Justme this is true. Lol I'm like hmm would I ever take my car to the track?? Most likely not. You're right about it holding its value though. Let's see how available they are next year.
