Today oldschool runescape has received a massive combat rebalance for magic and ranged. Today we are going to be focusing on magic to see what has practically changed.
Not only has magic gear been completely rebalanced, monsters now have elemental weakneses as well. This can mean some pretty massive max hits, even for lower level spells.

I'm pretty sure this has been on at least some mods' minds for years now. Think about Ice Demon in Chambers of Xeric and its weakness to fire spells. That's been in the game since 2017

Something else I don’t see anyone talking about, the first few basic prayers you unlock have had their drain rate reduced MAJORLY.. you can basically have one of them on all the time with very little prayer drain. It’s like a free 5% bonus

Not only that, they also made it actually relevant at the level you get it, where it will now act like a +1 to the stat when the stat is below 20, like it qctually does something for low level accs, that's pretty neat!

One thing that’s kinda weird now that all the elemental spells deal the same damage as each other against most creatures means that for most creatures Air is now the best because it’s cheaper per cast. Especially since you need air runes regardless of what element you are using

As they did mention in the post, these changes were meant to not be very impactful at all immediately more of a lever to pull when making new content / items so i'm ok with them not being super impactful for the range / mage weaknesses.

Something you may have seen since the update dropped, Flames of Zamorak + Charge + Toxic Staff can hit 50+ with elite void, any off-hand with at least 2%, occult, and eternals

@@Ragatokk That's the whole point, it's not to nuke things but to increase the depth they can design content with. Having a boss where their elemental weakness, ammo type weakness and melee type weakness changes per phase is now possible. Before all you could really do was change weakness from melee to range to magic.

@@tachyon3512 Yea the fact theyre only really used for quests is kind of dissapointing, so having elemental aspects that have an effect on combat would be nice. Same for Melee Weapons and Armor in particular, it would be amazing to have Dark Souls similar Buff Items that could give your Melee Weapon a temporary elemental Bonus for a few seconds, or even be a bit weaker but permament similar to poison

The elemental scaling damage on level is how it's done in RS3. And then it's also capped by your weapon, so all blast spells end up at the same damage as long as your weapon isn't a lower level than the highest damage one does. It is a great balance idea did they do it with slayer dart too?

They removed the 1 tick penalty of auto cast, does that not affect this? Or was it 6 ticks before?

@@danielramin6734 they didn’t change the attack rate of autocast spells. They made it so it doesn’t take a tick to start attacking after you click on the enemy. The rate of fire is still the same at 5 ticks.

My concern here is, can you find this information reasonably in game? NPC Examine is fine and all, but it's a Lunar spell and the new weakness changes are entirely on the Standard spellbook.

Trident is faster wirh basically the same max hit plus thralls option. Other than for afk training magic on slayer task I dont see any change worth changing my current gear for but I do look forward how they will impliment future bosses with weaknesses

I think it would be cool if they finally got rid of burnt pages and soaked pages (or whatever the water equivalent is) or if they made 1 page something like 1000 charges. From an Ironman perspective I can’t imagine anyone ever using it for combat. You don’t get many from 1-99 Wintertodt, and now the damage is almost negligible considering the effort required to get them. I would think that almost everyone out there stops Wintertodt at 99 firemaking, and then just burn through their pages and never use the tome again (except skilling because it doesn’t use charges). Charges kind of make the tomes dead content for anyone that isn’t able to buy their pages from the bots that are supplying the GE. I love this update though, it’s cool that the other three elements are FINALLY useful for something.

I was waiting for full crystal to go with my bowfa on my iron to do zulrah but now im probably gonna rush 95 rcing as theres no other way to consistently easily get wraths, if shops like the mage training arena shop sold them for points it would have been great but now i finally have other options. I have memory problems so bosses that require memory to beat them like rotations makes them insanely high tier difficulty for me

Just checked the wiki it says A cursed amulet of magic is an amulet dropped by necromancers in Great Kourend. It provides the lowest magic damage bonus for any item at -80%.

I haven't tested it, but did they change the xp rewarded from each spell to match for each element of a cast style? Kind of lame that if you want to use the style it is weak to you also get slightly less xp. Isn't crazy or game changing just something that seems to be overlooked with this update.

Im just about to start Dragon Slayer 2. I wonder if it affect those dragons aswell. I mean i would assume so. I was gonna go in with my Trident, but i wonder if i should just Earth wave them now and if that does more damage then the trident. Its really something for me to think about now which is insane.

We need old, old school RuneScape. Learn from the mistakes and implement changes from the off. Don’t include BS monsters/mini-games that just drop constant drops worth thousands of GP per kill. Money should be made through skilling, or through principal drops from bosses. Overhaul mini-games so they’re actually worth playing, and compete with each other (or you can get similar rewards, but just depends on which game you like playing the most).

I actually preferred it when the seers ring and boots didnt give magic damage cuz you could run prayer boosting items and keep max hits. Now you must choose between prayer bonus or slight magic damage which can be annoying for bursting in katacombs.

I think one of the issues that it could cause is making Iban's Staff useless. In case of a fire giants, you should be able to max hit 30 without any modifiers, other than chaos gloves, while using water bolt, which is higher than Iban's Blast (25). But it's only against targets with 100% weakness. Iban's being one of the important mid game unlocks and it's upgrade is almost required for early barrows and other activities where magic involved, due to high max hit and fairly low cost, before you can switch to trident. If elevental spells prove to be more cost effective and stronger alternatives, there really no reason to have Iban's. I've been out of the game for a while, so i need to see the details on weaknesses and try things out myself, but i feel like Iban's will need a buff in a future.

why does an early game quest reward need to be buffed further when it's better or on par with elemental staves against enemies with a 50% weakness with bolt or blast spells. Theres still many situations where ibans is better and cheaper, and you can count on one hand the number of enemies that will die faster to a bolt spell.

Against monsters with a 50% weakness: blast spells require lvl 59 magic to do 24 damage vs Iban's 25 with the main advantage being accuracy. Wave spells need 65 magic to surpass Iban's in max hit, but are noticeably more expensive per cast. Iban's blast should still dominate the lvl 50-65 range unless the accuracy boost makes a big difference for your target, which imo means Iban's will still be the best for barrows since you almost can't miss with magic.

Ok, disregard my comment, cause i have checked and you need 59 magic to get gauntlets anyway, which is already on level of Iban's and while you do get a much better damage on 100% weakness with bolts, it's still fairly situational. The biggest upside here would be lack of degradation on staff and no upfront cost of 400k (for upgraded staff). But due to it's versatility and use in PvM, iban is still good. Although i wouldn't have minded a quest that upgrade Iban's, kinda like they did with ring of shadows.

This update is absolutely massive and also quite tame tbh. Look at the monsters this affects, in the grand scheme of things it's a very small list. Anyone calling this the EoC update is illiterate or just being obtuse.

I wonder how this will affect melee/ranged slayer tasks you’d normally wouldn’t mage. An amazing update imo just wish I would’ve capitalized on buying some bulk mage gear before the update as every single robe/ mage gear frikkin sky rocketed lol. I wonder if seers ring/ DKS is actually way more profitable now.
