It’s extremely important to leave your grigri and carabiner hanging on the working end of the climbing line if you transition onto a tether so you don’t forget which end Is your climbing end. You fall strait to the ground if you accidentally try to descend on the tail end of the alpine butterfly. I use this set up every time I hunt and think it’s the best way to climb (just don’t ever mix up the two ends of the rope!!!!).

I grew some cahonas on Saturday as I got into my first set up and first real climb, ended up with my feet 30' off the ground. The limb I was over was a good 35" off the ground as I had both ends of my rope a couple feet off the ground. It's kind of intimidating the first couple of times. I ended up using a foot loop too.

Very good video Joe and Scott! I tried the alpine knot and it worked really well. Thank to you and Scott’s series of videos I’m really having a lot of fun getting up a tree with SRT. Thanks again!!!

So I have a tiny waist (size 28) and I’m running the Mantis in medium. Instead of making a short bridge for the SRT climb I’m actually able to just hook my carabiner across my stomach from left to right (remember small waist) and directly hook into my MR Lifeguard because of the large nature of the saddle itself. Just wanted to throw that out to all the other small waisted fellas out there. It’s definitely a tight rig when I’m climbing, but it’s definitely safer as I’m eliminating an extra 1 or 2 potential human knot errors by leaving out the short bridge. Love the channel btw🍻

Nice, I seen a YT video of Munford🤔and I thought I need to try that. Then you go and show it too👍. that will pull out easier, and if I forget to attach a biner and rope to my loop, I don't have to climb back up

the only thing i do differently is I have a climbing daisy chain connected from my harness to the hand ascender as a backup in case the grigri fails

Another great video guys. Thanks again. Have you ever tried using Predator rope for SRT with the gri gri + and hand ascender? Here’s hoping Syracuse comes off in July!
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 4 года назад
I have used predator rope in the gri gri and it worked fine however its 11.4mm and the gri gri design spec is 11mm. It worked for me but I would recommend you only use a rope size that's within the spec of the gri-gri for safety.

I know you guys use the grigri (plus model?), but do you have any experience with the MadRock life guard or safe guard? Petzl Stop? I'm trying to find the smoothest releasing auto-braking descender. Anybody? Thanks for your thoughts . Hunt safely , my Friends!

I see you're using a CT ascender with the roller. Have you tried using a rope walking setup with a knee and foot ascender?

Question for you, first year with my saddle. I am currently looking at SRT climbing. Do you normally transition to a tether once you get to hunting hight? Also what are you doing with the tag ends of the climbing rope? Thanks in advance.
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 3 года назад
It kind of depends on what saddle your using and how comfortable you can be in that saddle . Joe likes to tether off once at hunting height that works best for him . I tend to stay on my rope more than a tether . I like the added range of movement it offers me . I can pretty much shoot 360 degrees even in large trunk trees. Also if your using a saddle that covers more area ( from your waist to your entire thigh area ) like the flex saddle with the pleat you’re going to be more comfortable staying on your rope. Vs More of the minimalist models that are out there . Once every thing is up in the tree with us. We roll up the remaining rope and stick it in our pack so not to leave any human scent on or near ground level. Best of luck Chris !!!

Using the mantis saddle. Went back and forth using a one stick method to SRT. I'm out of CT so just like NY you may have to preset many trees in one area based on wind and movement. So I like the preset paracord idea to coming in climb quickly. Thanks for the answer back, stay safe and shoot straight.

Why not stay in the srt to hunt ...?

Are you always gonna transition to you saddle tether ? I was thinking of staying on my climbing line , but I've made a prusik out of Paracord and right above my grigri I'm gonna wrap it around my climbing line and the clip it into the carbiner as a back up in case I lean forward and get slack in the line just in case the grigri was to slip rope just a little could be a pucker factor lol, what do you guys think ??. I'm still waiting for my replacement flex saddle to get here.
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 4 года назад
I will stay on my climbing line if my tie in point is in position where its comfortable. I do not like to have the angle of my climbing line too steep, I'm more comfortable when it's at about a 45 degrees so if I can make that work I'll stay on the climbing line if not I'll tether in. Instead of using a paracord prussic , which I'd never use unless it's not life sustaining, you could tie a stopper knot under the gri-gri .

@@NYSaddleHunter Thank you for this video! I am trying to figure out my method for safely transitioning to tether. I did not notice a "backup" when you SRT climbed up tree using the GriGri plus - but I could have missed something. Do you have a recommendation on backing up as climbing? Perhaps employing the hand ascender device for a second purpose of backing up? Thanks again
@ethanh4973
@ethanh4973 Год назад
@@billhemphill1243you could also use a nylon climbing sling as a backup. Hook it through the carabiner of the grigri that attaches to the bridge. Then place a carabiner on the bottom of the ascender and put the other end of the sling on it. Then if the grigri fails the sling is holding you from the ascender.

Hey guys. I have a question. Still learning srt. Friend of mine got me started. He used his climbing line (w/ madrock) as his tether. I tried that but it seems as though being tethered in that manner, the climbing line is in the way when shooting my bow. I haven't tried to transition to a separate tether. It seems that a separate tether is lower and farther away from me giving me more room for taking a shot. Does that make sense? What are the pros and cons of both? Also... When climbing, should my bridge be shorter then adjust it making it longer when tethered?
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter Год назад
Hey Jim , You can remain on your climbing line , it requires a bit of practice and maneuvering for bow clearance. A lot of people opt for a tree tether the angle is more on a 45 degree which aids in better shot execution. Plus some say there more comfortable on a long sit on a tether. I think it’s a 50/50 Madrock vs Gri Gri + preference for ascending and descending. The Gri Gri has the added bonus of a panic feature . Which is nice when learning. Your bridge should be short when using a rope climbing technique. You’ll want the working parts no taller than face level . A better option is to have a second bridge . One for climbing ( Short ). the other for comfort ( Long ). My buddy Matt at Vital Ground can build a second bridge for you if interested. Hope this answers some of your questions Jim . We’re glad to help anytime !!!

I notice your foot wants to slip out of that foot loop every once in a while. I came up with a simple solution to that. I'll have to make a quick video and send it to you.

There's an adjustment on the footloop to tighten it up on my foot I just got lazy
