I have known some of the original members of Japan's legendary Mid Night Club (or Mid Night Racing Team; aka Wangan Midnight was based on what these guys started doing over 37 years ago) for quite some time now and for the past couple of years they have invited me to tell their story on Steve's POV. That time has finally come, as we met up at one of their favorite original meeting spots; Ichikawa Parking Area. More than 10 original members came out along with the current Leader (Chairman) of the club who, during a detailed interview, tells me the original story of how the club was founded, what their mission as a club was, how they beat everyone on the Tomei and Shuto Expressways and how the club has managed to survive for 37 years now with plans to go at least another 20 years in the future. Things are much different today than when these guys first started street racing and its fascinating to hear how the Mid Night Club has adjusted to the times and now has opened its doors to young people (new blood) too!! Kids who actually grew up knowing of the Mid Night Racing legend can now actually potentially join the club!!

I actually met the owner of that red R35 GTR at Tatsumi PA a few weeks ago. The guy couldn’t have been more friendlier. He tried his best to communicate in English when I asked about the car and the club in general and was more then happy to share. Very humble to have experienced that. Legends.

自分も25年前に永田さんとこで手を掛けて頂いた(田中さんメカでセッティングが永田さんですが)80スープラで湾岸で最高速に夢中になった。それこそmidnightのポルシェやアブフラッグのZ、プロモデットのポルシェやABRのソアラとかがガンガンに踏んでて、、、。 MOVEの件に始まり、有明でのZとGT-Rの炎上事故を目の前で見て、自分は湾岸降りました。それからはサーキットでしばらく楽しみましたが、今ではSUVでゆったりのんびりクルーズが好きになってしまいました(笑)

Awesome video and interview. I love Wangan Midnight and although I doubt I'll ever know more about this culture than on a surface level only, this video was really interesting and gave me great insight and I love it. They seem like good folks. I'll be waiting for that 2040 interview! ありがとうございました!

As a young guy in his teens I have a deep passion for cars this club was also a reason I love cars along with other reasons and growing up around them. Although racing on the track is fun in its own way I have a strong passion for racing on the street in the future not full on races as you know traffics gotten worse over the years but maybe a pull here and there on the highway. Great video I hope more people my age get into cars and have as much passion as I do😌😌👍

Thank you for this video because I’ve been doing a lot of research on Mid Night since they’re one of my top 1 favorite car crews and also because I thought the crew was gone but thankfully I came across this video and found out they aren’t and that really put a big smile on my face and I hope to meet some of the members when I go to Japan soon and hopefully I get to join the club too because they’re the reason I got into liking cars more especially the Nissan Skyline GTR R32 and the Mazda FD RX-7

The club I always look up to. Steve, for the 240z, was that stock built or custom, the outer body and inside backing were rusted, still loved the grand prix orange, though I'm more of the midnight blue guy. Also I can only find 260Z's in Australia D :

Good show but I do question that is it still the midnight club we know about？Cars which have been in whatever type of racing will have their front bumpers hit by stones and the painting and stickers will be hurt. However，none of the cars shown on the video has a front bumper like that. I am not questioning if they are true midnight club members but obviously they are not roulettes anymore. Sad story. If I am in Shuto expressway I would rather search cars with “unparallelled”stickers because they are the fast ones nowadays.

When I was a teen I used to watch tons of videos with people hauling ass at 300kph on the Wangan and all through the tunnels. It was always a bucket list item for me to do some day. I didnt realize how big those guy's balls were to do what they did. The scariest part of Bayshore is the unevenness and elevation changes. It looks smooth all the way across on the videos and when you're driving at normal speeds but at 300kph you will go airborne on the tiniest bump. My friend from Yokosuka and I got carried away on the Wangan playing around. Thankfully his car was way faster than mine so when I saw him catch air I had enough time to brake to get it under 250 before hitting it.

The first 3 were just a rehashed Midtown Madness aimed at cashing in on the popularity of tuner cars at the time. Midnight Club 3 is still awesome, but the games had nothing to do with this. Also, the Japanese in the games logo translates to "Wangan"

A game that more resembles this style of highway racing would've been 'tokyo extreme racer', the first 'fast and furious' game for console, or there was one on xbox360 I can't remember the name but it was a US market version of 'tokyo extreme racer.'

A lot more young people would be into cars if they weren't so expensive to buy, build, and repair. Laws are becoming more and more strict now in most places and young people don't want to deal with it or pay the absurd prices people are asking for cars now
